tomO
I bought a penn 309m reel for cat fishin and trolling. The info in the box said the reel was made for monofilament line, but nothing else, am I to assume thats all I can use or could I use a braided line. Anyone have one of these ? Thx

irishfield
I have 30 lb power pro on all my Penns for downrigging Lakers. Water body may determine what you can use etc depending on spiny water fleas etc. I find they shake off the Power pro pretty easy if you get them as they stack up at the rod tip. tomO
Thx Wayne,Do you put just power pro on them or do you back them with mono, It says it will hold 350yrds of 30lb test.
irishfield
I just fill them (mine are 209's) full of PPro from 1500 yard spools. Probably be smart if I started using 1/2 mono and top half PP considering the # of rigging rods/reels I seem to be collecting. You'd be smart too with those 309's holding so much line. 350 yards of 30 lb mono = a LOT of power pro. irishfield
What I like about using the PPro is almost no bow back... considering the small diameter in comparison to similar lb test mono.
tomO
so thirty pound test is good for big cats or musky ?I was thinkin of putting 80 on it.
irishfield
No.. I use 30 for downrigging Lake Trout. For Musky I use 65 and 80.
OhioFisherman
I think the reason for mono line is the level wind opening, braid may cut it over time. Mono would groove the guide on the old stainless steel eyes over time, so would the old braided nylon and Dacron. Most newer reels have ceramic or special hardened line openings and guides. tomO
I really didnt want to use 30lb mono especialy in cold weather.Their not a very expensive reel so I'll try power pro and see, and a 2.8 to 1 gear ratio I'm not gonna try using any buzz baits. thx again. OhioFisherman
mudbutt years ago we used the penn 209s up north with braided Nylon or Dacron line, didn`t care for that heavy of mono either.

Thx Take your reels into your local tackle shop and have them spool it for you. Write down what you have on masking tape and stick it on the reel seat bracket. Off the top of my head, I think you're good for 275yrds 30lb mono backing and 100yrds 80lb power pro. You'll never need more than 100yrds of braid for cat's and ski's. If you ever do need the backing, PLEASE let me know where you're fishing! -Brian
