Largemouth and smallmouth bass look no more alike than musky and pike, or different species of trout and salmon witch have different seasons. There is some confusion between them but for the most part the different seasons work out pretty good. Besides, if an angler catches a fish that they can't positively identify they should release it immediatly.

Right after a picture, cause if you don't know what it is how will you ever find out lol.

I've never even caught at smallmouth through the ice by accident...or seen one caught. I've seen a couple of large mouths come up while fishing for crappie, but that's about it. I don't think they are "as active as pike" in the winter. Not by a long shot. At least not where I am. (Sudbury.)

i'm not sure if you know where elizabeth lake is just outside of espanola but i pulled a 3.5 pound smallie out of there in 65' of water lake trout fishin 2 seasons ago quite the suprise. still the only smalie i have ever pulled through hardwater and only 3 largies ever

This is very true, I have seen countless pictures here with incorrectly named bass

I've seen plenty of incorrectly named salmonoid pics too, big deal? If you don't know what it is put it back.

.....Funny you know, with 30 years of ice fishing Simcoe I can't honestly remember seeing a slaughter of on ice smallies and yet I hear they're in there. ;)

If they can fish bass all year long in the states then there is no reason we shouldn't be allowed to. You guys say bass get hit hard but think about all the other fish that get hit hard like walleye and steelies. I would love to see our bass season opened longer.

I guesse the closed season thing is working then.
