For and against Water separator/Fuel filter
Bernie replied to icefisherman's topic in General Discussion
What owners will need to watch out for or possibly replace are fuel lines. Older fuel lines were not designed for alcohol and may deteriorate. The deteriorated pieces may get into carburators. Also they may develop leaks because the alcohol could soak through. -

For and against Water separator/Fuel filter
Bernie replied to icefisherman's topic in General Discussion
Yes Wayne. I agree. 2 strokes can be damaged easily by lean fuel mixtures. We see it especially in snowmobiles. I believe the reason being is snowmobiles are stored through summer conditions where heat and high humidity evaporate the fuel more readily than the water. Deposits then form on the main jets causing lean fuel air ratios consequently causing burned pistons. I think the problem is more evident on larger engines where larger amounts of fuel requirements can be restricted by additional filters and separators. What is confusing me is the fact that some other manufacturers are recommending them. Thats what I'm trying to figure out now. There may be some differences with the 4 VS. 2 stroke as well. Still looking, will let you all know what, if anything, something new comes up. -

Mercury does NOT want additional filters or separators added to their systems. -

According to a Merc bulletin there are many things to watch for with alcohol in fuels. I dug up a bulletin from Oct 06 and it states do not use fuels containing more than 10% alcohol or damage to fuel systems may occur. Unlike automotive systems boat fuel systems are vented to atmosphere. Alcohol absorbs water like a sponge. So long periods of exposure to atmospheric conditions will eventually lead to phase separation. The alcohol and water separated out forms an acid that can corrode fuel system parts. This can create a lean/fuel air ratio and damage engines. After 1996 mercs were built to withstand 10% alcohol but no more than that. Another thing to watch out for is fuel tanks made from fiberglass. Alcohol can deteriorate fuel tanks made before 1991 and carry the dissolved debris into the fuel system. Additionally Merc does not want additional filters or separators added to their systems that may cause further restrictions of fuel supply which may cause lean mixtures. Other manufacturers are recommending additional water separators be added. I'm finding this very interesting research and I will add to this as I find out more info. -
There is also Nosbonsing and Wasi. Never fished Nosbonsing but I have on Wasi. Both lakes will take lots of determination and patience but there are some nice pickerel in them.

He who can't be named is Valdemoort. Ya I have kids who watch Harry Potter.

The thought occurred to me over the weekend "how did the name handle thing get started?". In the past in my old Citizen Band days (CB's for those are too young to remember) we used "handles" instead of our real names or our license number. The reason we used handles back then was because many were not licensed or would run more wattage than we were allowed to talk further away. Has this tradition carried to discussion boards in some manner? Mostly none of us here have little or nothing to hide from so I suppose it is all just for fun. Some people here use their real names Rick, Lew, Joey , Gerritt, Roy, Corey, Dan, Terry and so on. Then there are some folks who use their trade/profession for a handle; hometownhandyman, aplumma, daplumma, Hearingfish, Headhunter, BPSBASSMAN and so on. Then comes the possible appropriate ones. The first one that comes to mind is "misfish" Now I have never fished with Brian but why did he pick a name like that? . Solopaddler is known for his forays into the wilderness on his own and his great posts on them. Moosebunk is also a great story teller with a fun twist to them. Now last but not least is the one that sticks out from all the rest, yes you guessed it, Greencoachdog ???? What is that? Just thought I would toss in a little fun topic here.

All these colours seem to work well for me. But some will work better than others under certain conditions. Favorite to start out with is yellow/green, all white or hot pink

Hmmmm tough situation. Some people do not take well to a reprimand and will only make the problem worse. Depends on personality but it has been my experience in the past an employee like this will ultimately need to hit the road. If they are productive, fit in well with others and most of all TRUSTWORTHY it may be worth the time to salvage the working relationship. Good luck with the situation HH.

A newbie are you? Welcome to the board!!

Restoule Lake comes to mind. Have never fished it personally but they are in there. May take some searching on it though as they can be tougher to locate. (or so I have heard)

Had a big rumble at the cottage on Friday night. Woke me up, thats unusual, normally takes a lot to get me up. Probably formed a pressure crack somewhere. It sure was making lots of noise the last couple of nights on Nipissing anyway. Didn't take any ice thickness readings but there were plenty of full size pickups going across.

I can see Dans point of view. But I cant wait to get back to the cottage at any opportunity to get at the next project or to sit on a deck chair and watch the scenery. My place is on an island and would not want it any other way. But having access all the time may be better for some. My place is old (built in the late 1920's) and lacked maintainence for many years before I inherited it. So its a labor of love. I know some of my neighbor's who have much nicer places than mine have rented for over 3 grand a week in peak time in summer. That was done through rental agency. I believe insurance rates may be different when you rent out but not 100% sure. You may want to check on that. If you buy one be prepared for doing some repairs or upgrades to the building and don't forget about water and septic. Good luck in your venture.

Drifting - Gross, Challenging, and Yummy all in one post
Bernie replied to Jen's topic in General Discussion
I would be happy just going for a ride in the boat. If you want to catch a live mudpuppy icefish on the bottom up here on Nipissing. Almost a guarantee you will get one. They are harmless. Thanks for the report Jen, it's good to see open water. -
Nice story Clamp-it. Thank you

That was a terrific report Moosebunk! The marlin must have been a blast. My brother hooked into a shark deepsea'n a couple years back. Same thing happened to him, no way they were bringing in the shark. Aching muscles for a couple days after. You had a great time it appears. Well except for your A+ report of the E-minus Air Canada.

Hope all is well soon. We need Jack back in chat to keep them bad dudes on there in line. A prayer for you is on the list tonite Jack.

Great news Icefisherman!. I can recall years ago my parents told me to enjoy every minute with your children. They grow up fast. So true. I am so happy for you and your beautiful baby.

Patience Lunate. Sometimes a little introduction of yourself helps too. Good bunch of folks here. Like Roy says a fella here on board (I won't mention your name Wayne) has a little trouble catching them there. So it's just a little bit of fun (we like a little fun here). So welcome aboard! Someone will give you a little advice but it wont be me about Temagami. I'm a Nipissing fisherman.

Thank you Joey. I'd ask you to give me a birthday hug but I don't want to get Roy jealous.
