  1. How did you know they were foreigners?
  2. You're right, it's not worth arguing over, but subconscious racism should be pointed out. It may not be done blatantly or intentionally, but you gotta call it out when you see it.
  3. On lake abitibi, the pike and walleye are always more white then green. I just figured it was from the tannins in the water.
  4. I drove by last week around 11pm. It was closed, but the lights were. I'm betting it's open.
  5. Thanks for keeping the pressure on them. I have a family cottage really close to Cobourg and don't fish there because I can't wrap my head around the by-laws.
  6. But at least you have a pension. I've worked for companies that offer during work beers, ice cream sundaes, lunches, etc. But when it came to things that actually mean something, like salary increases or even RRSP contributions, management just scoffed. Now I'm somwhere that actually has that stuff. I'd much rather have the company contributing to my retirement than a pilsner at the office.
  7. I would highly recommend hiring a guide wherever you go, or at least asking if one is possible. It can really make a trip being able to dial in on this fish right away.
  8. Thanks, I'll be sure to keep my eye on it.
  9. Thanks for the info. I gave them a call and left a message, hopefully the conditions aren't too bad.
  10. Hi there, Anyone have any info on the ice conditions out on Temagami? I'm heading out to Tamar on Friday and can't seem to find any info on the conditions.
  11. What if you gut hook the fish and kill it? Are you obligated to put it back dead (therefore violating the laws regarding wasting meat) or keep it and get busted for fishing for the fish out of season?
  12. Thanks for the info. Did you guys just fish their huts or did you explore the lake at all?
  13. Lol glad I'm not the only one.
  14. Hi there, I'm thinking about booking an ice fishing trip to lake memesagamesing at Matthews Little Portage Camp and was wondering if anyone on the board has any experience there. I've developed a reputation for picking duds when it comes to booking lakes and lodges (hence the lack of reports) and was hoping for some input. Thanks! PS - if anyone wants places to avoid, send me a PM. I could talk your ear off.
  15. Bills have definitely gone up and will continue to go that way for the foreseeable future. The province is under going a transition to a more renewable and smarter grid, which definitely comes at a cost. The way I see it is as an investment in the future. Less polluting sources of power means less illness (asthma, etc) and less healthcare spending. It may cost more, but if I get sick less it's worth it to me.
  16. With regards to why more renewable power is going up when we have this surplus of power, let's go back to the highway analogy. If you can spread out when people use the roads (like spreading out power use through time of use) you need less lanes to maintain and can have cheaper roads. As our current power plants need replacement, if you can lower the amount of power needed to meet peak demand, you can have less generating stations. The province is moving towards renewable sources as the replacement for current generating sources, while lowering peak demand through time of use pricing. Sorry if what I'm saying makes no sense. I'm on my phone and it's hard to go up and see what u wrote.
  17. I don't like to comment on stuff I know nothing about (which is why I don't comment on any of the fishing threads as I have no idea what I'm doing) but I know a little about how the electricity system works. One thing to remember about this article is who is writing it. You can twist anything to fit your agenda and obviously this conservative MP wanted it to fit his which is fair enough, but here are some other points. Think of the electricity system as a highway. You have to have enough supply (think of it as lanes in the road) as demand (traffic). So when they are peak times (rush hour) you build enough lanes to meet demand (number of cars on the road). Unfortunately when there is less demand (middle of the day), you still have just as many lanes available to maintain etc, even though you don't need them at that time. It's the same with power; even though you don't need it, you still have to be able to have it on hand for those peak times. Similarly you keep paying your plows and salters for the roads even if you don't use them. That's why sometimes you have to sell power to other jurisdictions at a loss when you don't need it. Mind you the province also sells power at a profit, so it's not always at a loss like the article implies. Last time I checked the OEB stats the province made money, but that may have changed.
  18. OPG is owned 100% by the Ontario government.
  19. I used http://www.canadasmotorcycle.ca/ The helmet came pretty quickly and was reasonably priced.
  20. Oh I agree, there are definitely solutions to whatever concerns people have that are far better than putting the kibosh on the rink. I'm just saying that bylaws don't exist simply to annoy people, there are (arguably) valid reasons for them and cities can't really pick and choose which ones to enforce.
  21. A puck could go over the boards and hit a car that's driving by. There's a reason bylaws are put into place.
  22. Peaksaver has nothing to do with the Green Energy Act. Peaksaver is conservation, while the Green Energy Act addresses generation and putting more renewable energy into the grid. It's an entirely different debate which would get rather heated. We should put energy policy as another topic like religion and politics, no matter what you wouldn't change your mind and I wouldn't change mine.
  23. It actually has nothing to do with McGuinty. Conservation is a policy that all parties support. It doesn't matter who is in power with whatever policies they put in, you always want to lower demand. Electricity works sort of like our roadways, you always have to be able to meet peak demand (which is why the 401 is 16 lanes wide). If you can lower the amount of power people use and spread it around, you need less power to be able to draw upon to meet peak demand. So if traffic was more spread apart instead of being bunched up during rush hour, the 401 could be 8 or 10 lanes instead. Power works sortf of the same way; you have to be able to meet peak demand. If you lower peak demand, you lower costs.
  24. The province always needs to be able to meet max electricity demand. If you can lower the amount of power needed at peak, it ends up lowering costs. Peaksaver is a way for residential customers (like you and me) to be able to help lower peak demand. They have similar programs for companies (demand response for example). If they can lower the cost of electricity on the spot market (it's expensive for the province to buy power at peak times), then the cost for electricity goes down. This wouldn't impact your whole bill (which has delivery, regulatory charges, etc.), just the kWh amount you pay. The price per kWh is changed every 6 months, so any savings would be reflected then. It's actually a pretty good program to lower peak demand.
  25. I went in to Sail yesterday and both the shorter jacket and longer floater coat are now $129 plus tax. They also have a lot of their ice fishing suits on sale. I picked up the black frabill suit for $210, down from $399
