We did our good deed last week. UPDATE!
DoubleDigits replied to fishnsled's topic in General Discussion
I believe I witnessed this bird being released...not sure about the dates but I was driving down Bronte rd. in Milton and saw two men, one dressed like Jack Hannah with a big leather glove, releasing a hawk that looks just like the one in the pic. This was November 2, at about 1pm. -
Exactly.

Quite a leap to assume that the diagnosis of this mechanic suggests murderous anti-fishing saboteurs are at work...This incident, in all likelihood, has nothing to do with fishing...

Here's a nice Cobia my brother caught last year And another Emperor
-
This is pretty snapper caught by my bro. This is a good fish for inshore. This toothy critter is called a Yellowtail Pike: Here is a nice snapper, and a Painted Sweetlip, or Slatey Bream, (depends who you ask). Never kept another one of those...gross! Another 'error' in the trial and error of discovering which ones taste good...this fork tailed catfish. Caught at 110 fow well offshore. It was brilliant silver when alive. Orange-lined Triggerfish: A couple of Giant Trevally, or GTs:

Thanks. I will dig up the old lap top and see what I can find. I didn't take nearly enough pictures. I caught and released many creatures that I would never see again, without a camera around...thought I was going to be fishing there forever...

There isn't much pure flats fishing in that part of Aus...but I did used to wade a nearby flat for a tasty but ugly fish called dusky flathead.

It was trying to bite me the whole time lol

Here are some pics i dug up of some fishing my brother and I did in SE Queensland (near Brisbane) a few years ago. First is a vid of memorable catch, my only attempt at freshwater while i was there netted me this nice little Aussie Bass: Here are some other saltwater pics: My buddy Damon with a shovelnosed shark And the baby version: A man-sized Bull Shark...this one didn't come in the boat... My fave Aussie fish, the Snapper (Pagrus Aurata). Looks, fight, eating...has it all Called Squire or Pinkys as juveniles, This is a Longtail Tuna, an inshore species that come into the bay for a short season and can be chased and sight fished with fly or lures. This one took bait. One of the best eating fish in the sea, a Spangled Emperor: Another tasty one, Goldspotted pigfish: This is a Spotted Wobbegong, one of the many local shark species: Great place to fish...

If the guy in the video was planning on releasing that fish, then I would understand the criticism, and agree that he is an idiot. If he intended to keep it (legally), then I see no issue (though he very well might still be an idiot). Look at the outcomes: This guy now (hopefully) has a very impressive fish mount on his wall that he gets to show off forever. One man is very happy, and some people that go to his place will be either impressed/amused or grossed out. His wife will hate it. Also, there is one less big, old, predatory fish (since we aren't talking about legality, then who cares what type...right?) swimming around in that river/lake. That particular fish will never reproduce again. It is perfectly valid to think that killing a fish for a trophy or food is wrong or unethical...it just always sounds a little suspect coming from fishermen. Especially when accompanied by self-righteous outrage. Besides, if you're into confrontation and re-education, there are plenty of illegal fishing practices to focus your vigilance on...

Once in a lifetime thing that you've seen in the outdoors??

My brother and I were fishing off Moreton Island, Australia, in his 19 ' boat when a pod of very frisky humpbacks came just about as close as you would want. The whales were a common sight at that time of year, but it was something else to look over the side and see the blue water turn black. I could make out the barnacles and texture of its back as it slowly glided under us, so close I could have dipped my 7' rod into the water and touched it. He came to the surface about 25 feet beside us, side on, and just sort of floated there looking at us as if to show how huge he was. He gave a sort of hostile kick of the tail and left us alone. A few days later in the same area we witnessed at very close range, humpbacks herding up and feeding on massive schools of bait. We were marking huge balls of bait when the surface began to bubble and boil not far from the boat. Big clouds of air bubbles were rising to the surface. Our first thought was some sort of gas being released from the bottom, until the big open mouth of a whale came up through the foam and took a giant gulp of fish, which we could make out, flying out of the water. The feeding continued as we drifted away, and when I got home I looked it up, and sure enough, humpback whales do that! Once a friend and I pulled over to pee at the side of a logging road not far from Cobalt, Ontario. As I stared into the bush, I saw a lynx (much bigger that I thought they were!) about 15 feet away, staring straight at me. He stood motionless for 10 seconds or so, then disappeared. -
how about this one for a case of eyes bigger than the stomach

A friend of mine stayed at a cottage on Maple maybe a month ago, and he and his girlfriend caught two big (6lb and 8lb) walleyes and a couple eaters in one afternoon of fishing.

Most stupid thing you've heard while fishing,

lol! So annoying! -

THIS is the stupidest. Its one thing if a guy picks up a fishing rod, having never seen one used, but to stubbornly continue to fish that way, despite everyone else you've ever seen spin fishing?? From personal experience, I've determined that this upsidedown-style type of fishing stems from that the fact Dad used to fish that way, so thats the way Imma do it too! -
I find WFN's airing of UK Carp fishing matches from the mid 1990s much more egregious... and BB is right, its all relative. Down south, bed fishing is completely kosher, and if you're looking for big ones, a no-brainer. I wouldn't expect anglers to go out of their way to find difficult ways to catch good fish, when obvious, entirely legal patterns are right there. The idea of the show is to film the fish in their habitat, reacting to presentations. I've seen some pretty interesting behaviors...

How would you fish this spot for bass.
DoubleDigits replied to Harrison's topic in General Discussion
Good thread! I would similarly be interested to know how some of the top bass guys would approach this spot. Like, at what GPS mark, depth, what lure, etc. -

Hmmm... is that a little boil i see near the floating dock?? Looks like a Heron sitting on it. Might have to toss up around that first, fish it real slow for 2-3 mins before, before flipping the left bank, then the right... -
Nice Red! On a centre pin, no less!
-
No, you may now catch and selectively live release more than your limit, of walleye pike and bass, provided that...(the three points i mentioned above)
-
This is legal provided that a) the aerator is running the whole time b size limits are obeyed and c) catch and retain limits are not exceeded at any one time
-
Very cool. He puts out one of the best fishing shows out there
