Hey fellow fisherman. I just found a bag of steelhead at the bottom of my freezer from summer 2017. I froze in water but I can see some of the pieces are a bit freezer burnt. I'm not a huge fan of eating steelhead baked or grilled especially if I know it's been in the freezer that long. The question is can I save these fillets by brining and smoking them? I'm just curious if it's worth the time and effort. Have you guys had luck with finding older bags of fish and making them taste good by brining and smoking or is there a considerable difference in the taste. I don't want to throw them away. My experience with steelhead is that it doesn't freeze very well in ice for as long as I can freeze walleye and perch for. How long do you typically leave steelhead in the freezer for before it's unedible? Thanks!.....and yes I do own a vacuum sealer. I know ppl will definitely mention that haha

What's your best boat ramp argument or funny story?
b_cdot replied to LostAnotherOne's topic in General Discussion
I once had a total silent standoff. I was backing my boat in and a boat started pulling in behind me with 3 other spots open at the launch as he got to the dock the back end of my boat was in the water. I stopped and we both sat there for what felt like an eternity (1-2mins). He finally moved to the open side of the ramp. Joke was on me it was the one and only time I ever forgot to take my safety chain off and I couldnt help but laugh at myself. THe guy I had the standoff with shook his head and I told him it was my "first" time launching the boat... -
that is so weird.....been fishing soft water for a while now. Your'e only a 4 hour ride from me.

good point garnet. I cleaned my terminals last fall but could have gotten worse over winter. I will take a look

Great pictures

Haha crapped the bed sounds like whats happening. It has to be the new update that messed up the communication.

Thanks for tge replies. Any idea why it would say that my bow unit is preventing it from multi sourcing?
-
Voltage is no issue. Bow transducer and transom transducer so there shouldnt be any interference. The mouse mention is scary. But i might have to look. I was under the console and saw nothing fishy. I will check the ethernet cord. i think its funny when youre on the water and u dont even want to fish u just want to figure this out for next time. I really feel as though the new update or me doing resets messed up the communication between the 2.. i plugged it in last night and they were reading temeperature. I reset kts to mph. Just gotta see how it acts on the water

is it possible my old navionics gold card was sharing from gen 3 to gen 1? I just upgraded to navionics plus this year? I could swear I was map networking last year. I threw my nav card into the hds 5 and I have all updated maps. Won't share anymore. Tks for the reply Danbob.

I have a gen 3 on the console and a gen 1 on the bow. I have an 83/200 skimmer and an lss2 transducer. No issues with these 2 units last year. Wow that changed! Go out today for the first time and immediately notice I have no temp reading on my gen 3 (console). Never had this problem last year. Then I reset defaults and my temp magically appears. I get out fishing and as soon as I turn on my bow unit (gen1) my temp disappears on console despite the 2 units sourced to themselves. Then I noticed my SOG changed from mph to knots on my bow unit. I reset my defaults on both units a few times. I kept losing my temp reading on console and then realized that my nav chip wont network to my gen 1 anymore. I played around even with network sonar turned off and these units are still messing with eachother. I go to multi source option in sonar menu and it says that my hds gen 1 is preventing the multi source network. What a cluster fu%k it was. Is the new lowrance update messing with this networking? Has anyone had this problem? I know this sounds confusing but this was my day today trying to figure out these units. Like I said no problems whatsoever last year between these two units....

If it buys me a couple years i might consider doing this. Those travel covers arent cheap...

I use to have a Crestliner fishhawk and I had the J hook cover. It was exposed to 40degree temps and -20degree temps. After 2 years it got brittle and started ripping around the gunwales. I now have a Lund pro v with factory snap cover. Im looking at it outside covered in snow. The boat is going into storage next week. I'm wondering if this cover will give me the same problems. Any of you with similar covers have any problems. I feel that since I dropped the extra bucks on the better boat this cover should be top of the line. Anyone have trouble with these covers going to sh&t? Am I playing with fire now that i have it covered with ice and snow?

Been fishing the Detroit river pretty consistently for the last 6-7 years. Without a doubt the St clair river was much nicer to me and many of my friends in recent years. Incredible numbers of fish without the ridiculous boat traffic and long ride.
-
Well said. We are spoiled with the fishing around here!
-
Yes I do live in the area. St clair river is unbelievable, you are only 10-15min drive from Mitchells bay on lake St clair. Can't beat the location for fishing and hunting, I'd say give it a serious consideration and look into it. You likely won't be disappointed.

Can't go wrong moving to Wallaceburg if you're a fisherman. The options are endless...Wallaceburg is a hotspot for retirees and new families. Lots of of ppl coming from the GTA to stretch their retirement dollar.
-
I'd say I know a little bit about the fishing.. . Can't beat the prices of real estate around here
-
You might have to bring it to the "guy" to get some sleep..lol

I usually throw a can or two of seafoam in throughout the aeason. I use merc quikstor for winterizing atabilizer. I will use this when the boat goes to sleep for the winter. I have also been told by ppl it stabilizes but its not the beat choice. The side of the can says it stabilizes as well.
-
Good call! Added seafoam about 3 weeks ago. Its likely still in the system

Left the boat on at the ramp today to drain all water in the bilge if it is by chance my last day out...hope its not
-
It does give me peace of mind considering one of my livewell pump connections cracked when i first bought the boat 3 years used
-
Just used the shop vac after fishing tonight on the bilge line... should be good. Not doing the full winterization yet. Walleye fishing is just starting to heat up around my waters.. just like to winterize the plumbing with the cold weather coming up. CanTire had rv antifreeze on for 3 bucks a jug. Took me 5 mins to reflush the plumbing again tnight. -6 next 2 nights. I dont mind being too careful. Gives me a chance to crack a beer and pretend im working on the boat for an hour while the wife watches whatever it is she watches. As long and im not watching it...life is good!
