We've gone there the last three years. The fishing on Gowganda Lake is tough, but the fish are there. We fished the back lakes and the fishing was good to excellent. If you like bass, Hangingstone and Frypan are unbelievable, the access is down a logging road and to get to the boats is steep decline- not bad going down, but a tough slog going back up (it's worth it for the fish). Obushkon has BIG bass and good sized pike and walleye. We never fished Stumpy Lake (terrible access road-not for the faint at heart) but I heard from those who have that the walleye fishing is great. We stayed at Lookout Point Camp. The owners Vicki and Larry make you feel right at home and the camp is spotless! By the way there's no closed season for bass. We went the second week of June last year and the bass fishing was great!

The problem isn't lack of legislation- it's the lack of enforcement. You can't have enforcement without proper staff to enforce the laws. We have governments that continually cut back on front line workers because it would inconvenience their corporate friends. The Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments have destroyed the confidence in public service. Every public sector worker in under attack because no one wants to talk about the value that they provide. You can't do more with less no matter who is doing the job and you don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand that. All you have to is quit drinking their koolaid!!

Back in the early 80's I was only working two weeks of every month because the economy was in a tailspin. My wife had to go back to work to help out. My son was only 2 at the time and I was able to spend some great quality time with him and to this day we have a wonderful relationship. After a year or so and I started working steady again, my wife and I decided that one paycheck was enough so she became a stay at home mom again. We had some rough spots over the years but not enough to change our decision. The days spent with your wife/partner and kids are the best of times and there's no amount of money can make up for that. Good on you for recognizing what's important! I have friends who have spent their whole lives working and have lost families and friends because their jobs were their priority. Some people find this out too late and sadly some never learn. Good luck!

I'm going to check out the deep cycle batteries and inverter suggestion, that would also help in case we have a power outage at home. Thanks!

Wow the people on this board are always so helpful! I never thought or knew about (CPAPTalk.com). You guys are great!

That's a great idea and I could also use that as home back up. I asked the people that I got my machine from but they weren't sure if a battery back would last a full week. I wouldn't want to take the chance relying on an old generator as was mentioned in one post. Thanks for the suggestion. The reason I asked the question is that I'm sure there outfitters out there that have dealt with this over the years, but I trust the folks on this site who might have already found reliable ones.

I have severe sleep apnea and realized how dangerous this condition can be during the power outage during the blackout of 2003. Not an experience I care to repeat. I've always wanted to go on a fly-in but this has held me back. Suffering through one night is one thing but the long term risk of medical complications is another. My brother-in law has been trying to talk me into giving it a shot, however until you experience the problem you don't don't realize the danger. Has anyone on this board found a a good fly-in camp that is able to accommodate someone with sleep apnea or has anyone found a good alternative solution? Thanks!

Now that's a fishing report! Good stuff!!!!!!!!!!!

It couldn't be. If I was one of the parents, I wouldn't be out walking in public lol!
-
That's funny, we just had a complaint recently in Windsor about someone fishing in one of our riverfront parks interfering with a couple walking in the park as well. The circumstances are strangely similar. Over the years we've had people complain about bike riders and roller bladers, but no one called for a ban. I hope we don't see this spreading to other communities. We have always had a lot of people fishing in our parks and it's never been a big issue. I hope they can turn this around after all, public means public!

Taking my 4 yr old lil gal fishing puts me in the hospital

Thanks for posting the update! -
This is absolutely ridiculous. Public spaces are for everyone! I can understand private land being out of bounds but public parks are paid by all taxpayers. How many of us spent our childhoods fishing along the banks of lakes, rivers and streams and share fond memories of the one that got away? It sure beats spending time in front of the TV or video games. Our politicians need to give their head a shake!

Just this past week in the letters to the Editor in the Windsor Star a local business man was saying we shouldn't spend money on preventing the Asian Carp. The genius went on to explain how it could be a financial windfall as a food export which would lead to job creation. This idiot probably doesn't understand (or care) how much money and jobs are generated by sports-fishing and tourism, just in Ontario. I'm afraid that Mercman could be right if we have people with this kind of mentality who could violate the law by introducing them purposely as part of some mad get rich quick scheme! Thanks for the link!

I think you underestimate the support that OFC members have for the MNR staff(at least I hope so). Some of the conditions (funding and staffing cuts) that get in the way of doing the job certainly play into a lot of dissatisfaction with services and decisions. I myself appreciate that someone is trying to preserve our hunting and fishing opportunities! I'm more concerned with some of the bonehead political decisions that we've seen over the years!

That was excellent! Thanks for the laugh.

Good for you- congratulations!!!!!!

She should be thankful you didn't invest all that money in Facebook!

The Dam This is an actual letter sent to a man named Ryan DeVries regarding a pond on his property. It was sent by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Quality, State of Pennsylvania. This guy's response is hilarious. State of Pennsylvania's letter to Mr. DeVries: SUBJECT: DEQ File No.97-59-0023; T11N; R10W, Sec 20; Lycoming County Dear Mr. DeVries: It has come to the attention of the Department of Environmental Quality that there has been recent unauthorized activity on the above referenced parcel of property. You have been certified as the legal landowner and/or contractor who did the following unauthorized activity: Construction and maintenance of two wood debris dams across the outlet stream of Spring Pond. A permit must be issued prior to the start of this type of activity.. A review of the Department's files shows that no permits have been issued Therefore, the Department has determined that this activity is in violation of Part 301, Inland Lakes and Streams, of the Natural Resource and Environmental Protection Act, Act 451 of the Public Acts of 1994, being sections 324.30101 to 324.30113 of the Pennsylvania Compiled Laws, annotated. The Department has been informed that one or both of the dams partially failed during a recent rain event, causing debris and flooding at downstream locations. We find that dams of this nature are inherently hazardous and cannot be permitted. The Department therefore orders you to cease and desist all activities at this location, and to restore the stream to a free-flow condition by removing all wood and brush forming the dams from the stream channel. All restoration work shall be completed no later than January 31, 2010. Please notify this office when the restoration has been completed so that a follow-up site inspection may be scheduled by our staff. Failure to comply with this request or any further unauthorized activity on the site may result in this case being referred for elevated enforcement action.. We anticipate and would appreciate your full cooperation in this matter. Please feel free to contact me at this office if you have any questions. Sincerely, David L. Price District Representative and Water Management Division. Here is the actual response sent back by Mr. DeVries: Re: DEQ File No.. 97-59-0023; T11N; R10W, Sec. 20; Lycoming County Dear Mr. Price, Your certified letter dated 11/17/09 has been handed to me. I am the legal landowner but not the Contractor at 2088 Dagget Lane, Trout Run, Pennsylvania. A couple of beavers are in the (State-unauthorized) process of constructing and maintaining two wood 'debris' dams across the outlet stream of my Spring Pond. While I did not pay for, nor authorized, nor supervised their dam project, I think they would be highly offended that you call their skillful use of nature’s building materials: 'debris.' I would like to challenge your department to attempt to emulate their dam project any time and/or any place you choose. I believe I can safely state there is no way you could ever match their dam skills, their dam resourcefulness, their dam ingenuity, their dam persistence, their dam determination and/or their dam work ethic. These are the beavers/contractors you are seeking. As to your request, I do not think the beavers are aware that they must first fill out a dam permit prior to the start of this type of dam activity. My first dam question to you is: (1) Are you trying to discriminate against my Spring Pond Beavers, or (2) do you require all beavers throughout this State to conform to said dam request? If you are not discriminating against these particular beavers, through the Freedom of Information Act, I request completed copies of all those other applicable beaver dam permits that have been issued. (Perhaps we will see if there really is a dam violation of Part 301, Inland Lakes and Streams, of the Natural Resource and Environmental Protection Act, Act 451 of the Public Acts of 1994, being sections 324.30101 to 324.30113 of the Pennsylvania Compiled Laws, annotated.) I have several dam concerns. My first dam concern is, aren't the beavers entitled to legal representation? The Spring Pond Beavers are financially destitute and are unable to pay for said representation -- so the State will have to provide them with a dam lawyer. The Department's dam concern that either one or both of the dams failed during a recent rain event, causing flooding, is proof that this is a natural occurrence, which the Department is required to protect. In other words, we should leave the Spring Pond Beavers alone rather than harassing them and calling them dam names. If you want the damed stream 'restored' to a dam free-flow condition please contact the beavers -- but if you are going to arrest them, they obviously did not pay any attention to your dam letter, they being unable to read English. In my humble opinion, the Spring Pond Beavers have a right to build their unauthorized dams as long as the sky is blue, the grass is green and water flows downstream. They have more dam rights than I do to live and enjoy Spring Pond. If the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection lives up to its name, it should protect the natural resources (Beavers) and the environment (Beavers' Dams). So, as far as the beavers and I are concerned, this dam case can be referred for more elevated enforcement action right now. Why wait until 1/31/2010? The Spring Pond Beavers may be under the dam ice by then and there will be no way for you or your dam staff to contact/harass them. In conclusion, I would like to bring to your attention to a real environmental quality, health, problem in the area It is the bears! Bears are actually defecating in our woods. I definitely believe you should be persecuting the defecating bears and leave the beavers alone. If you are going to investigate the beaver dam, watch your dam step! The bears are not careful where they dump! Being unable to comply with your dam request, and being unable to contact you on your dam answering machine, I am sending this response to your dam office. THANK YOU, RYAN DEVRIES & THE DAM BEAVERS

I removed my dandelions with a Weed Hound I bought at Canadian Tire. It's a metal bar with spikes that you put on the dandelion and use your foot to drive it down, give it a twist and it removes them by the roots. I then throw some grass seed down to fill in the patches. The lawn comes in so thick it chokes out the weeds. It's a little bit of work but it's safe for the kids and pets and better for the environment. It took a couple of years but my lawn is virtually weed free.

Great question- thanks for the debate!

WINDSOR, Ont. -- The $17.5 million in federal funding announced Monday to protect the Great Lakes from Asian carp is a good investment, University of Windsor professor and aquatic invasive species expert Hugh MacIsaac said Monday. "It's one of these things where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," MacIsaac said. If the large fish got into the Great Lakes and reproduced prolifically they would hurt native fish populations and could even hurt boaters or jet skiers if the silver carp, which jump out of the water making for YouTube highlights, invade the Great Lakes, he said of a worst-case scenario. "We don't want to find out." Fisheries and Oceans Canada Minister Keith Ashfield announced $17.5 million over five years for prevention, early warning, rapid response, and management and control of Asian carp. "The Great Lakes is the largest freshwater system in the world and represents one of Canada's most valuable assets," Ashfield said in a release Monday. "We are committed to working with our American counterparts to continue to protect the Great Lakes basin. Together these measures will go a long way toward our ultimate goal of stopping Asian carp from entering and becoming established in the Great Lakes." © Copyright © The Windsor Star Read more: http://www.windsorst...l#ixzz1wGBRU6bv
