Hi all, Went back to my whitefish lake with my buddy Al and his kid. Really wanted to get his kid into some fish, but the fish God's were not with us today. The leave your brake engaged on your skidoo and nearly set it on fire god's were smiling on us today though . Anyway, I had plenty of whitefish and a good number of trout come screaming up only not to take the bait, tried loads of different presentations but could get none to commit, none except a nice fat Pike that took a 5" live dace minnow set at 20'FOW in 38'FOW. Was really cool to watch it coming up through the clear ice inside the hut…..released it and she swam away to fight another day.

LOL…thanks John. I just tried another recipe I made up. Did not video it as I had only imagined the recipe and the logistics of cooking it get worked out on the trial run. Anyway…it was amazing! Steamed whitefish on zucchini noodles with fresh homemade parsley sauce and garlic new potatoes……..the picture does not do it justice as the lighting in the kitchen sucks….but you get the idea.

Made an updated video of my Whitefish soup recipe.

Haha…why am I laughing…oh well….lol Thanks Chris, I don't often think about it but you are right, man you don't want to be in a position to get the blame for losing the fish….lol. Carmon done good! Thanks man! Thanks Terry! Its been an odd kinda year….anything is possible…lol. My pleasure Tom. It was actually pretty nice outside the shack with no wind, unbelievable considering the temperature….but I have honestly felt colder on a grey, damp English day at +10C.

Myt pleasure…it was a blast! Yeah…..carmon always catches the trout when we go, this was definitely one of his bigger ones. Lac Seul About time, this year's weather is NUTS! Thanks John, it was about time we landed some quality fish, Carmon and me have been out for trout 2 times before this and skunked each time. Thanks man! LOL…come on Mike…you know ya wanna! My pleasure smitty

Hi all, last week i planned to head out on the weekend with my buddy for whitefish and lakers. As per usual the forecast for the week ahead was off, and by the time the weekend rolled sarong the mild (-15C) had turned into -31C, don't even want to think what the wind chill was factoring in the 15kmh wind. After a brief conversation on the phone at 4am with my buddy which was a weird mixture of wanting to back out but neither one of us wanting to make the call…we decided to go. We got out on the lake at about 9am. Delay was due to my 4 way trailer light male connector pin snapping off, and having to attempt to splice on a spare one in minus 31C in the dark….duct tape and electrical tape don't stick to well at those temps, so I put the rolls in the microwave for 25 seconds and it worked a treat, but you had to be quick! We set up the shack in slightly shallower than usual, we should have checked the depth before clearing the spot for the shelter, but we did not want to waste much time doing it all again and opted to try 28'FOW as a compromise that would allow us the instant comfort of the shack. Pretty much straight off the bat there was smelt coming through in big shoals with the whitefish not far behind. They were in a picky mood today, but the aggressive ones were also around. Micro tubes in pearl (think crappie 1.5" tubes) on an 1/8 oz jig always works on this lake and that is what they seemed to prefer today. After about a half hour spell where there were no fish to be seen I ventured outside to drill a few holes, as soon as I got 50yrds from the shack I heard my buddy shout "I think I have a trout!" I ran back to the shack and he was battling some thing that was peeling drag effortlessly. Carmon had a 1/2 ounce glow whistler jig with a white double twister tail tipped with a small minnow as bait. A lengthy 6 minute battle ensued which ended with Carmon landing a real tank! After pictures I headed back to drill some holes in slightly deeper water, it was surprisingly comfortable when the wind dropped and as soon as I dropped my jig down in 38'FOW a whitefish slammed the jig. I saw a few more but returned to the shack because my buddies fish finder battery had died and wanted to share mine with him, I'm such a considerate chap We stayed until midday. I managed to burn a small hole in my new shelter , and tear a hole in its cover….DOH. My camera also stopped working and ensued up using my point and shoot so did not get all the video footage of the catches…oh well, at least I can patch the tent and the camera is ok, guess it was also cold…..lol. TRUCK THERMOMETER AT 8 am CARMON'S TROUT VIDEO

I can skate….but you are not alone…..I have no clue about hockey either….NONE!

Funny you mention that…might be one in the making My pleasure, gonna head back there soon, this time they won't escape me! It was so fun, could not help laugh…. was nice to hook into them, plenty of action too. LOL…when I am with my buddy Carmon I find the edit bleeps to be plentiful. I have to admit that I swear like a trooper, I have just been doing these videos for a while and automatically tone down my language without even thinking about it. Solo….did you hear that????Lets go, some great canoe routes between here and Fort Frances:) LOL…it was an EPIC FAIL for sure. LOL…was beginning to wonder Chris. Have done that method on that lake many, many times before and landed them all some days, just my luck that day, and yeah….I love watching them chase…a real thrill….way too addictive. John….you are crazy!

Mike…contest sounds amazing. I personally think what you have achieved with your business ventures is awesome and should be applauded by the members of this forum. -
that is my buddies favourite….I have tried them on this lake….with limited success, maybe worth revisiting though Well actually it is the Syrian refugees' fault I could not catch a trout that morning. Lol….thanks Tom, it was chilly for sure! LOL…yah…law of averages comes into play here I think.

Hi all, Went across our lake and over the Hwy 17 to a really nice local trout lake. I missed the opportunity to hit it up the day before because one thing led to another and stuff got in the way of my plans. On the up side it gave me the chance to get everything ready properly for the next day. So the scene was set to rid myself of the New Year skunkiness. I set off as the sun was coming up over the Dinorwic section of the Wabigoon chain of lakes and arrived at my destination 11 minutes after leaving the house, nice ride since we have had very little snow making the lake snow drift ( think speed bump) free. After finding my first hole drilled was in 70'+ FOW I moved around a bit until I found 56'FOW….ahhhh…my honey hole! That was the first indication that things might not go all my way that morning….next time I am checking depths I will wear my reading glasses, as when I set the shack up and put them on the fish finder actually read 38'FOW…..DOH! Oh well, It was -27C and I was not about to leave the warmth of my Otter before I had warmed up, secretly knowing that would likely result in me staying put no matter what. After an hour of staring at a blank fish finder screen and trying to work out how to use email on my new cell phone(xmas present) I was beginning to lose interest. Then an arch, a BIG arch, came flying off bottom to check my jig, only to disappear as fast. Instantly my focus changed. Not long after that…..fish on….and off! Then another….and another….and another, all of them managing their escape in the nick of time. I had to laugh….great fun but frustrating. The fish were interested in the baits I was 'dead sticking' but like I have found out to hold true for Lakers is they love the chase! Quick snaps and frantic reeling getting all the hookups. Just a small 1/8th ounce brown jig with a medium minnow….i have found that any other colour jig spooks them on this lake, but they will also hit lipless cranks of any colour very aggressively. As I write this at 6am this morning I am contemplating heading back….we will see….but it is just as cold as the other morning and I'm not relishing the thought of frozen nostril hair that much as I sit comfortably in front of my iMac with a hot cup of strong Earl Grey tea. I am getting old.

LOLOLOL. Nice one guys….those are bayooootees.
-
I hear ya…they are snow machine or ATV only, takes 3 of us to load in the truck when packed with gear….awkward and heavy! But damn is it comfy!
-
Hi all, Finally got out in the new Otter shack, it got cold! Went round the corner for a quick morning session before my buddy had to go to work. He managed to get 3, 1 of them a slab the other 2 kinda small. I lost a huge walleye…..DARN! There were scores of fish on the screen all morning but they had lockjaw, but the shack was nice and warm and the bucket seats waaaaaay more comfy than the old bench seat style I had before. The fish were in 30'FOW and were only responding to tiny minnows on a plain hook with a small splitshot for weight, they ignored even the smallest jig presentations. I had a slip bobber on when the walleye hit, never used one on the ice before…kinda fun!

Right on Nick…great haul of fish!

These pictures came up on my Facebook 'memories' notification today for this day 5 years ago when jack was just one and a half years old. It was his first ice fishing trip with me. We made his snow machine helmet with a kiddies bike helmet and some see-through plastic we found in the house and cut to shape and stuck on, I remember how proud he was to be wearing a helmet "just like dad's", he used to call the snow machine a "snowmean"….man I love him! Happy new year! Simon.
