  1. Side brackets can be used quite effectively on standard canoes with small gas motors. Last week in Algonquin I used a side bracket and my 2hp Honda (27lb's) to save some time on the access lake. Yes the canoe can become unbalanced but that's pretty easily fixed. (counterbalance )
  2. You're almost making me rethink packing away my float rods for the season. Sounds like a great day, good for you .
  3. Come fishing in Quebec end of problem. In QC spouses can fish under your license. Y'know those sorts of marriages are legal in Canada, I doubt the CO would check too hard.
  4. Water temps are still cold and as far as size goes the bigger the better. So yeah, deadbaiting should work just fine for you.
  5. Fantastic, thanks for taking the time to post.
  6. I do. My camp is in N/W QC west of Rouyn Noranda, headed up this week to do some fishin.'
  7. What a great find, nice fish! I'll bet if you bushwhack and walk the stream it'll be really good..
  8. You guys work fast, can I hire you? Just got back from my place east of Kirkland. The water is high isn't it? Highest I've seen since we started going up there. Good luck next week, I expect you'll be up for the opener. Cheers
  9. Nice Dave. Have to say I'm glad ice fishing is over with down here though.
  10. I think I'll pass. What a great job Wayne! About the only way you could do it as well. Fly in outfitters would never strap a Sportspal to the pontoons the normal way, the aluminum is too thin and they'd crumple. That is truly ingenious. Just got back from hauling my sportspal and a load of stuff up to the camp, everything's good to go for next week. (Beyond somebody breaking into my shed and stealing, among other things my water pump. ) Anyhoo, we'll be hitting some back lakes starting Thursday...
  11. Heck no, this was 5 years ago. When we flew in there was a group of young lads from Buffalo I think who were flying into another lake. They said they'd been on a ton of trips with Cochrane air over the years,,, That wasn't you was it?
  12. HeHe, no not everyday. I've been on a ton of trips in that neck of the woods though over the years. Beerman, we went to Little Wakwayokastic in September. Walleye fishing was decent enough. Largest was a pretty incredible 32" and super fat caught on a perch shad rap. There were a couple of very obvious spots where we anchored up and jigged up as many as we wanted.. Overall it was okay, not great but definitely okay. Cabin wasn't particularly great imo, and I'm not a big fan in general of the James Bay lowland type lakes. Much prefer shield country.
  13. Don't think so bud. After this many years I think I know a thing or two about centrepins.
  14. Good luck, I fished Yesterday it's a decent lake.
  15. Advanced age? C'mon man I'm a few years older than you. LOL! Listen, you're not a weakling, there's no doubt you could do it. It's 90% mental dude. Interesting. I can say for sure that stems on the mushrooms I picked were hollow so I guess they weren't false morels. Perhaps Pine morels like someone mentioned?
  16. Specktacular indeed, I figured you guys would do well. Some beautiful fish there bud, well done!
  17. Agreed. Ideal solution? Bring an OFC'er along to taste test the 'shrooms.
  18. That's awesome man! Can't believe those turkeys hung around with 2 of them shot LOL! I remember years ago I fished a rainbow lake in the Haliburton wildlife reserve and encountered the exact same scenario. They were boiling and rising everywhere over deep water and I had no fly rod. I ultimately threaded a nightcrawler onto my hook with no weight and lobbed it out into the rising fish working it back slowly. That worked as well and pretty similar to your story.
  19. Not exactly true. If you can make it up we're going to bushwhack into one of my secret back lakes...the old fashioned way.
  20. Glad to hear you made it out alive! (Looking forward to hearing about your trip as well. A few more fish I'm sure. )
  21. Actually they're made for that. Generally stainless steel is used. The better reels have composite bearing with ceramic parts. Some are entirely ceramic.... Many are also shielded making them pretty much bombproof anyway. I've been laying my centrepins in the water for 30 years and have never had bearings rust
  22. Thanks bud. Actually I am missing the old squareback pellican my uncle had (good memory ). It was very stable, just heavy. I'd love to stash it on one of the back lakes up near my camp. And you don't have to get rid of your fibreglass canoe. You can rent an ultralight kevlar for 30 bucks a day. (that's what most people do)
