  1. Maybe not as big as some of the monster up there but decent lake trout anyday. Nice work. Awsome background as well, i d love to pend a few years up there before i die. Looks incredible.
  2. IM new here myself and u probly already know this since u mentioned the grand but just in case, in summer i love going to the section of the grand closest to hamilton (dont think the exact stretch of river matters, anywhere u can access really) and fishing for river smallies. U hav a bit of time to kill till then but its an amazing river for big bass. It also has great musky fishing although i cant personally say i ve caught one. Good thing about it is u dont need a boat or anything, just wear some shorts and wade, its warm. Really fun to fish that way too.
  3. I tried fishing that area from shore for pike... no luck and im not going back there. But if ur into carp i saw some big ones. Although in spring theyre all along the shoreline of lake o
  4. I'm going up to the cottage in bancroft area this coming friday and Im just wondering if i can expect there to be enough open water to fish. Its a medium sized lake and theres other small lakes nearby i might try. I know all lakes are differnt but im just looking for a general idea of what to expect because i ve never really been up there before may. Seems like a warm spring tho. Anyway i appreciate any info, even if its not really close to bancroft. So to sum it up my what i d like to know about any lake in cottage country u ve been to is wats the ice like and can i fish it? Thanks for ur time. I ll update u guys on the fishing (lakers, bows and brookies) when i get back.
  5. I agree with every word, well said. Its Rice Lake today, Its your favorite lake tomorrow.
  6. I wonder what the tourism will be like when theres no fish left in the lake? Personally i d rather go to a place that i can keep only 30 sunfish a day (more than enough i ve never kept more than 10) than somewhere u can keep as many as u want but theres none to catch due to over fishing. i beleive the americans might feel this way as well
  7. I ll take that advice, going in without mono was never really an option but im ordering another spool and was considering filling it with either braid or fluoro, to see if i dont like it more. And even then i was leaning more towards flouro than braid because of its sinking qualities i mentioned before. Thanks for the input.
  8. Good work and thank you for taking action if everyone responded to situations like this the way u did this kind of thing would never happen. Hopefully it also sets a good example for everyone who reads this, so they know how to respond if they ever see this sort of thing. I d also like ot point out that i saw the before and after pictures and i dont know why anyone would prefer that lifeless muddy hill to such a nice habitat full of life, and fish! Im sure they plan to make it nicer but still it was perfect the way it was, a little dirt trail down to the water is all they needed to have a beautiful property. Maybe they have different tastes than me but none the less harming the fisheries and environment is unacceptable. Keep up the good work.
  9. Ive never fished pike before the season re opens in late may, but yea that is one of my favorite times of year and u can still catch the big fish shallow. Id imagine tho that u could still get them to bite when theyre spwning, did u try big flashy lures to piss them off. I think they are territorial and would hit them. I wouldnt mind giving pre spawn pike a try tho, problem is where i fish the ice isnt off the lake till the season closes. I live in toronto tho so i could always give lake O a try, too bad i missed out this year.
  10. Yea im starting to realize the anwser to my question isnt as black and white as i had hoped. Ive used mono pretty much my whole life without any problems but if another line gives me an extra advantage catching fish i ll give it a shot. Im thinking both fluoro and braid will give a better hookset when trolling since they have less stretch, plus the added senstivity this gives me when casting and retrieving. I also like the idea that fluoro sinks so this could help me get the lure down easier, even tho its spring i ve found lakers still like 20-30ft of water so i wanna get it down a ways without wieght. I hope to be going the first full week of the season tho so they might be shallower. Since i cant really decide i might order 2 more spools and have one with 8lbs mono, one with 8lb fluoro and one with 15lb braid plus fluro leader. Try them out myself and see which i prefer.
  11. Yes i am using the same line for crappie fishing because, to be honest, i could care less wat line im using. I just need to get some line on there and i figure it might as well be wat im gonna use in the spring since fishing line is expensive and i just dont have the money. I kno ppl believe u need ultra light line and eveeryone has their favorite crappie brands but i use 8 or 10 lbs test and just throw on a slip float and a worm or live minow and the crappies never complain. Im not a big crappie fisher anyway just killing time till bass season opens.
  12. Yea i should have been more specific, im using a 7ft med. action spin rod and im hoping to catch them casting spoons and crankbaits near the shoreline, but realistically i ll probably resort to trolling these lures behind our canoe. I never long line because we re in a canoe and i dont really see the point(i could be wrong), but generally i ll just let out as much line as i feel i need to get down to a particualr depth with a particular lure. Its a bit of a guessing game. The one problem i have with braided is wen i ve used it in the past i find i cant cast as far as with mono. I suspect this might have been because it was rigged on my worst rod and reel but im not sure. Dont want to get it on there and then find out i cant cast as far.
  13. I'm not much of a trout fisher but every year my dad my brothers some friends and i go to good old algonquin for spring trout. Not going till either the first or the 7th of may but i want to get my reel spooled now since im using it for crappie. normally i just use 8 pound mono but ive been thinking that maybe spooling with just flouro might be since it gets the lure down their better since i dont use weights, and because its supposed to be more resistant to abrasion than mono. A lot of ppl talk about braided being their go to line but i dunno about with trout? Anyway just looking for the best line to fit the situation so that would be trolling and casting for spring lakers and to some extent brookies too. I have no real experinces with either of these lines so ur opinions or any general info about these lines would be appreciated. Thanks
  14. As humans we ve drove many a population of fish to extinction by overfishing, so i see no reason why we cant put this ability of ours to some good use and get rid of these invassive pike
  15. Will do, I've never fished with a bait caster yet but i was gonna get one for a musky outfit if i move up to nipissing, but yea i ve always wanted one for bass and pike too, i ve heard good things.
  16. Yea thats what i was thinking, didnt come with a spare spool tho but i might order one i think theyre pretty cheap. I was also considering trying out flouro for spring trout? i ve only ever used it as a leader but i hear its very abrasion resistant and more importantly its heavy so it helps get your lure down there quick without much weight. Not sure just thinking out loud here.
  17. So i just wanted to see wat u guys think about my recent purchases, i've been fishing for awhile now with the cheapest equipment money can buy so i thought i d treat myself to a little something for this openwater season that is soon to be. So i bought a st croix premiere 7ft medium action spin rod and a shimano symetre 3000 reel. This is my first significant investment in a rod and reel so just wondering if ppl more experineced then myself think this was a wise choice. I mostly fish for bass pike and trout so i will be using it for these species as well as occasionally walleye and crappie fishing.
  18. What do you mean the other areas are never really safe? If the ice conditions are supposed to be good should it be alright? Im asking cause i plan on heading over to one of those other areas, sorta in the narrows actually, this weekend for my first time.
  19. Im pretty new to ice fishing so im not sure but either way i just cant afford another fishing expense... i ll take my chances.
  20. is that only for balsam or other kawartha lakes with the pike problem as well?
  21. Just curious if u could tell me if u caught those on a small lake? the reason i ask is cause i always thought the only good perch fishing is on big lakes... but wat do i know ive only been actually targeting perch the last year or so.
  22. good job keep it up, now that i think of it fishing really is the ultimate way for a son or daughter to spend time with their dad. Always has been for me.
  23. SOme nice fish.. hey wondering if u d let me know how u caught those cause u have a spinning reel and all, everyone i see salmon fishing has the fancy equipment and i dont so im just trying figure out how to catch salmon with my regualr bass rod and maybe spoons on jigs? never seen anyone doing it but i ve heard it can work.
