if you wanted more cranking power and retreival speed, wouldn't you switch to a baitcaster? i would have thought so, but dont really know...

any pay to fish trout ponds around cambridge?
smally21 replied to ricardo's topic in General Discussion
there is one on either hwy 97 or clyde rd (somewhere around there). it has unusual hours i think. as previously mentioned, some are a great deal and some are more in the business of selling fish than fishing... -
hmmm, that is alot of worms to pick. the worms all look like clones and the big dirt tubs are all over the property....in this case.

Thinking of going from tiller to console
smally21 replied to bigcreekdad's topic in General Discussion
while fishing a tiller may have some advantages, but while boating the console is so much better, if you know what i mean. i dread long rides in the tiller boats up north, holding the throttle til my tendonitis screams. facing half forward, half backward. stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down..i just can't stand 'em!! i have a dual console and its got alot of walk through area. the consoles dont get in my way. weather protection is nowhere near as good as a windshield but space is better. -
i usually buy from the Stoney creek guy when heading up north. great value vs. little styrofoam containers. they are usually a great size. and delicious.

before reading this post i never would go with a spinner over 2500, in fact i use a 1500 most of the time. but some very interesting points have been brought up regarding pier fishing/line weights, balance, etc. i think the baitcaster takes care of every situation where i would need a larger spinning reel. when i was a kid we had giant clunker reels im guessing it was availability or cost..but looking back why did we perch fish with 4000 reels?

100.000 Walleye Stocked in Hamilton Harbor
smally21 replied to Fish Farmer's topic in General Discussion
I don't really know how walleye act when inserted, but they don't have shock collars on. Do they just hang in the area that were entered in? Eating gobies and taking shade in the algae bloom? Is it possible they will just make a run for Lake Ontario?? Just pack their things and head to Niagara Falls or Toronto or something?? I had heard a while back about a huge walleye release in the Grimsby area into Lake O. Anyone have an idea? -
tks harrison - they look light/comfortable perhaps a little on the fragile side with the rimless design. im up for a new pair ill check them out they are less than the oakleys, and not quite so 'pro baseball player' looking for everyday wear..

I think its great the way guys don't let storage space or smaller vehicles or what have you get in the way of your fishing. Hardcore, diehard, resourceful whatever you want to call it.. :clapping: drifter those small lake fishing machines look awesome.

Salmon that's 'clean' enough to eat. Where?
smally21 replied to hotsky's topic in General Discussion
so a tuna isn't worth 30 grand? what about fugu? -
im right behind you on that one lew. as in "behind you" glad you said it first!! hey pike hunter i bought some replacemene lenses for oakleys off ebay and they are nowhere near as good as the original oakley lenses..are they for the oakley half jacket?? harrison what revos did you like the best??

x2 on the oakleys. comfortable enough to wear all the time, expensive enough you wouldn't think to jam them in your tackle box. they last me a long time, provide much better clarity than a 15$ pair of rack glasses. i have cheaper pairs on the boat for guests and forgetfulness but they can't touch the oakleys. so yes, i've done a side by side. i wear them all day every day so lightwieght and ergonomics are important to me. it seems as though 250$ sunglasses are better than 15$ sunglasses, as they should be. its unlikely one would need to spend that much to find a good pair -try a bunch on at the store, see what fits you well and then spend some money and look after them!

it is interesting that guys posing with suspended stringers of giant walleye is OK, massive coolers full of perch dumped all over the boat or front lawn is OK, a wheelbarrow full of lake erie bass from the opener is OK..but 3 bass on a riverbank is the worst thing ever. one is wasted, the other enjoyed of course, and the pics are of legally obtained fish so no harm there... i agree, BTW, with the original post of course and find the act disgraceful, but i can see another point being made during the thread.

Dave must be some sort of perch whisperer. I fish for perch in the same areas and just never put together the numbers, or the healthy average size that Dave seems to repeat over and over again. Well done!

How do you Import boat/trailer from the USA
smally21 replied to rdambros's topic in General Discussion
i dont know about the quebec thingy... States that don`t have titles will have a document that you can print off that proves they are non title states (helps with lack of title explanation) i`m not sure why you are mentioning black book values - each of my transactions were on actual sales prices (sorry if this has changed) 72 hrs only required on land based vehicles - its quite clear on the website though there are definitely border staff that think otherwise... keep all your forms and documents they come in handy in a year or so when the govt asks if you paid tax on the boat, which, of course, you had paid to them during the import process.. don`t mess around too much with total price (split it up any way you like) - a coworker was bringing a motorcycle across claimed to have paid xxx$ - the customs officer had the ``ebay you have won this item`` sheet printed off in their hand!! clever.. -
do it online - print out a temporary..i think

im happy to hear you are catching some healthier looking fish. that is good news indeed. ive caught some 4-5 lb bass in there, alot of gobies...the far side of the bay can feel like cottage country. lots of small cats that act like bass, caught on the same gear, fight the same..its kind of different than their behaviour i have noticed elsewhere. the carp put on quite a show during their busy season and sometimes if you walk behind the big (former) canada centre they are so thick, just below the surface you could walk across them. perhaps i shouldn`t be so negative towards it , the area is used by lots of people that get enjoyment out of it. and lew - no one will make you swim in it!

fish i catch down there are covered in lesions and body sores. i don't want to touch them let alone take them home. there are perch and other panfish out in the bay proper and around lasalle marine that has somewhat better water quality. all beaches are closed again right now. local marinas advise flushing the acidic water everytime you boat there. the anchor comes up covered in pitch/tarlike product that is impossible to wash off your hands or boat. the myth of poor water quality is not a myth. though it is much better than it used to be.

check the patsboating link and the govt sites, apologies but the research you've done up til now hasn't gotten you too far, most of the comments in your first posting are incorrect.. lots if info here see you have found some, lots of guys have done it, its no big deal and highly reccomended.. feel free to PM specific questions ive done it a few times.

i go there when i dont have time to drive elsewhere. its not spectacular but it is full of surprises. i fish from a boat so cant say much about the shorelines, but there is lots of it. the algae blooms can get pretty discouraging but work around them. as to the smoking? well there it is. the entirity of bayfront no smoking seems a bit extreme, though i certainly agree in the playground and more public areas. im looking forward to at least some parts of Hamilton that aren't knee deep in butts. sometimes i swear this city is paved in cigarette butts, ya can't take 2 steps without seeing one.

Fisherman "local knowledge" was covered in my post. you require charts unless you know the waters and the items you mentioned. it was clearly stated that if one was to argue they had local knowledge, ie of the items you stated, then they would also have to state that they 'knew' where they were and the explanation 'sorry didn't know i was in another region' would be contradictory. yer guilty of failing to have charts, OR knowingly fishing outside the licensed territory, but not both.... perhaps read the post again.

If the GPS argument was brought up the prosecutor types could simply say the border is clearly marked on the chart that you are legally required to have on board your boat at all times.. GPS is not an acceptable form of knowing where you are, or navigating, according to the establishment anyway only govt charts are acceptable.. BTW I don't agree with anything i just wrote GPS is THE way to navigate and know where you are but i do beleive it would be entered in the argument... Just tossing this out as the GPS seemed to come up repeatedly...and yes i know that 'significant local knowledge' is written into the language as well but the 'defence' is basically "i didn't know where I was" so essentially you can't argue that you dont have charts cause you are familiar with the area but i dont know where i am in the same breath... starting to ramble was up late... difficult scenario should be streamlined of course the problem goes away if you just let the fish go...but they are tasty no matter what passport they carry or language they speak!
