  1. thanks again johnnyb. i'll give that bait shop a go. anybody have any thoughts on using a 1/16th little cleo? i usually cast them for specks, never jigged them for perch...
  2. thanks johnnyb, i'll be stopping in there for sure. but, i need to renew my license, and their website says this is something they don't do. any suggestions as to where i can do this in the area? or should i stop into bps on the way up... i'm hesitant to do that because a 10min stop might turn into well over an hour
  3. you're not allowed to skate on it i don't think, so i doubt you'd be able to fish it. give the mnr a call and let us know!
  4. great report! innisfil bait and tackle--where is that exactly? i'll hit it up and grab some bait before i head out on thursday. always nice to support a local tackle shop
  5. thanks for the report! heading up to gilford myself next week hoping to get my gf and friend into some fish. picked up some berkley power bait minnows--gonna jig those in the 12-20 fow range. first time doing this, so we'll see how it goes! anybody know of a good bait shop in the gilford area btw? i need to renew my license and maybe pick up some tackle.
  6. never drink bottled water. we live in a nation where fresh water is next to free. the energy going into pumping, bottling, transporting, and marketing water is just sickening. why pay to transport something that naturally moves itself? it makes no sense. i'd rather focus on cleaning up or public water systems that give up and drink spring water.
  7. i think i'd leave it, whatever it is. some aeration and a new friend couldn't be so problematic could it?
  8. must be on a dew worm? or a meal worm. judging by the bare size 12 hook in the fish's lower lip... nice fish! you're doing better than anybody i've seen or talked to, and certainly better than my (so far skunked) self!
  9. brookies, no doubt in my mind. perfect fall days in algonquin, when the fire of the leaves are matched by the colours of the fish. and those perfect, dark streams with swirling eddies and endless riffles. every catch is a gem. they're very close to my heart.
  10. what a shame about the floods/headwaters. the creek looks spectacular from kingston rd down--like some of the nicer streams and tribs you see up in the georgian bay area. i figure if it's open year round, it's got to be worth hitting when the conditions are right. if there's a steelhead there, he'll see my mepps
  11. i think i saw you bbqing if there's no steelhead run up the highland creek, i'd like to know why. it looks like a perfect stretch of spawning water, all loose gravel and nice current. i might cast a few spinners at the mouth just for fun. i've just got too good a feeling about that place!
  12. pretty sure it's open to kingston road year round, but i'll check again. good idea
  13. walked highland creek today from the mouth up to kingston road, and it looked amazing! wasn't able to spot any steelhead, but there were a few salmon backs breaching the shallows as well as a good number of spent salmon on shore. the steelhead have to be there, no? the river just looks too amazing.
  14. was at the humber with my girlfriend yesterday for the same reason, to watch the salmon jump the dam... the salmon were there, and of course, so were the snaggers. we were there half an hour maybe, and i think we saw four salmon snagged. it was so shameful to watch, i just had to leave. i would have called the mnr, but i did that this spring when i saw guys snagging steelhead and when i finally did connect to a c.o (after a lengthy wait), he told me "i'm the only guy on right now, and i'm up at simcoe." i asked if i should call the cops, he said they wouldn't do anything except maybe ask the snaggers to leave. good to hear that in this case the police are pitching in--you'd expect them to, wouldn't you, when people are flagrantly breaking the law? maybe i'll go back today and film a bunch of these guys then make a phone call. someone should be on this.
  15. i took the lid off a pop can and used the reflective inside to hyper-charge the lure. way better than the palm of your hand i should think.
  16. captures what i love most about fishing. this is me exploring a little stream in remote, northern new brunswick. endless runs, pools, and riffles. i could walk this creek forever.
  17. tom, i'm going to release anything except a couple of walleye and maybe the odd smallie thanks for the heads up though, good to know ended up hitting long lake today, thanks again wask. the smallies were hitting often (first cast!), but lightly--only landed a few little ones, 6-10". couldn't find any of any size, not down deep, shallow, on bottom, or the surface. ah well, the lake was gorgeous and it was a beautiful day on the water! saw a roadkilled juvenile bear on hwy 28 just south of the lake. first for me and a sad sight
  18. very helpful! thanks wask. i will def keep this in mind when heading up there
  19. thinking of scrapping the boat rental and just hitting it by canoe... problem with the kawarthas is there's just so much good looking water to choose from! guess i'll pick a lake today and get back to you all
  20. thanks! now, does anybody know how chemong is for bass fishing?
  21. stunning
  22. looking to rent a 14' aluminum w/ a 9.9 to take a couple of friends out fishing. i know there's a marina in port perry that rents, but i was wondering if there's a better deal or a better lake or both somewhere else in the kawarths. or anywhere within a couple hours of toronto really. any suggestions? any tips for gettnig into a couple largemouth or walleye or hammer handles on scugog or any other kawartha lake? thanks!
  23. fishing the mouth of most of the major rivers w/ spoons or mepps or corn (not my favourite!) will probably produce salmon. but i think this might be a bit of a late year for the run...
  24. caught this guy in grenadier pond last year... first i'd ever seen like it
  25. we used to nail them off the islands on a grub/leech/crayfish in about 20-30ft of water... that was about a decade ago, but it was the best smallmouth fishing i've ever experienced...
