Temple Forks Outfitter 4wt 8' 6" rod ordered and should be in hand in about a week. (thanks dave) Now on to the reel.

Starting Wet. I have had some luck with wet fly's before matched with a float. That set up was a little make shift thought :/
-
Some of you may remember last fall when I started the topic 'The Progression of a Steelhead Newbie'. A lot was learned and many of you gave great advice. That eventually got me into float fishing with a centerpin and float rod. I would say last fall was the best fishing I've done in many years! Next week I'll be buying my first fly rod/reel and will be documenting it all here in this topic up to my first fish on the fly. Can't wait! Stay tuned...

Not sure but it felt on the cooler side. Overcast the day before and overnight the air temp. went down to 15.

Almost as epic as my local 14" Brown report. Jokes! Amazing! Love the pic of the huge Carp and also the Gar.

The quest for my personal best resident Brown continued Monday morning. The first pool I fished produced this spunky acrobatic spring board within the first few casts. And what a sweet looking pool it was... The next hour or so only produced a small 8" Brown and time was running low. On my way back up river a fish absolutely nailed my spinner. It was it! Jumps all over the place. Going single barbless hook made it really intense. I got it to the bank and reached for my camera. One head shake and back into the river it went without a pic. DAMN! I'm guessing about 14-16". A photo for my collection would have been nice. Next time... Thinking back to last fall, this may be my personal best Brown. I'm just not sure if it was a resident fish or if it came in from the lake. I would say it was about 16". One more 12" Bow after that and off to work I went...

O.K. Now I have no choice but to finally get my first fly set up. Very inspiring! Wicked report.

I think it's about time I stop talking about getting into flyfishing and just do it. My next attempt will be a river that has more depth and a larger population of Browns. I couldn't find a hole deeper then 30 inches where I was fishing but I only had 2 hours of exploration.

That's the closest I've heard so far but more high pitched and everytime I hear it, the sound is only made once.

Wild Browns – Traveling the backroads the last 2 weekends

Nice! When did you catch that Steelhead? -
Not a squirrel for sure. More scratchy and screetchy. I think it's a deer.
-
There are plenty of deer behind my place so that's a strong possibility. Then again there are plenty of almost all animals mentioned above. I guess the mystery remains until I see this critter in the act of making this call.
-
The only other way I could describe it, is as if your clearing your throat, but very fast and higher pitched. I'm guessing it's a hawk or owl. Do cormorants make a sound like that?
-
For the last few years, every spring when I walk my dog in the ravine, I hear this sound come from the forest and I have no clue what it is. I suspect it's a bird of some kind. The only way I can describe it: Loud, somewhat higher pitched screetch, that last about 2 seconds. It sounds like it's done from the throat. I've never been able to spot the source. Any clue??? Thanks.

After reading about this fish I'm suprised fishing for them is legal in any manner. Am I alone on this one??? Don't get me wrong...I'd love to fish for them but maybe it's better to leave such a fragile creature alone.

Every year my wife Anna's younger brother Andrew and I do an annual camp out. I worked Saturday until 3pm so Andrew hit the road first with most of the gear to set up prior to my arrival. Once I dashed out of work, I through in the new Black Keys CD called "Brothers" (how appropriate) that Andrew burned for me. What a wicked CD from start to finish. It set the mood right. My Fishing Protege. It seems like just yesterday I taught him how to fish. That was 11 years ago now. After a quick hello and high five we finished setting up camp. Time was limited so we set off to hike and pursue some underwater critters. The water in the river was the lowest I've ever seen it in May. Only smaller fish remained in what are normally decent sized pools. The larger fish had dropped back to deeper habitat. Like I said, nothing large but in the end we found: Many Mooneye Walleye Rock Bass OOS Smallies Sucker (white and redhorse) Channel Cats Once we got back to camp, light was fading along with our energy so re-fueling was a must. Pork Tenderloin Kabobs absolutely hit the spot!!! Is there a better way of waking up then to the sounds of moving water and singing birds? Till next time... Laz

I think so. They are usually only 2-4 inches long and somewhat skinny.
-
Usually when fishing, I lift a few logs or roots in nice moist areas to collect those medium sized red-ish worms. They work amazing! With this dry weather they seem hard to find. My question is: Can these worms be bought somewhere within T.O. / Mississauga? I'm not looking for the huge brown worms that can be bought just about everywhere. Thanks Laz

I thought it was snagged for sure...I was wrong.

Formulate Plan Set Forth Success!!! Nicely Done. Check my post...a carp on there for your eyes.

With limited time this weekend (due to a ton of yard work needing to be done) I stayed local and hooked up with and old buddy from high school. We had some factors working against us: The sun was high and bright The water was low and clear Getting into a few walleye was the plan which never came into fruition but some other species were ready to play! Spunky Mooneye - Does this count as chrome??? Not really I guess but still fun. A couple more Mooneye were caught on a wooly bugger fly using my pin and float set up. I tried dead drifting with no success so I switched up to casting into riffle and retreiving it back, combing the faster moving water. I got into a couple channel cats and oos smallies as well. Things shut down for a bit and then Cam hooks into what feels like a decent sized fish that took a jig. At first we thought it was a big walleye but quickly realized that it was all weight. Had to be a carp...and it was. Highdrifter - If your reading, this carps just for you! Wink Wink. In the end no walleye to be found and the sun destroyed me. All worth it though! Thanks for reading Till next time... Laz

Falling asleep isn't too much of a problem. It's staying asleep for me. I'm good until about 3am and then it's just tossing and turning from that point on with visuals of what's to come consuming my mind.

Now a trip here would be EPIC! Check out the National Geographic article and video in the link: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/11/071114-taimen-mongolia.html

I'm just realizing that this thread is still alive. Since the site upgrades I thought we lost all the old topics because I couldn't find them through 'My Topics' in 'My Profile'. The search bar at the top helped me find my way back to this chronicle of sorts. Well since this started I've landed many Steelhead, bought my first pin, met some great people, started a new job and Anna delivered our first baby (Eliana). So much can happen in 6 months! A fly fishing progression may follow...
