  1. It was a pretty day out and I needed to stretch the old legs. Felt pretty good so I decided on some hiking. Grabbed the backpack, 3 rods, and away we go.

For those of you not familiar with Thorold, the town is surrounded by a series of ponds, channels and canals known as L. Gibson. Boating is not allowed so shoreline fishing is all you can do. Wading is also not allowed There is far more shoreline than you can hope to cover in a day. The back areas are beautiful with an abundance of wildlife just steps from town. There are also a couple of hiking trails following some of the shoreline.

As for the fishing, today was not a banner day. The bite was off. I said I brought 3 rods: one for spinerbaits-useless. One for worms, and one for tubes. Lot of trial and error before connecting, but today's ticket was small baits. 4" carolina rigged worms and 2" tubes. There were no big fish caught. 6 dink bass in all

But look at what else was hitting my plastics. This fella was on a 2" tube

The perch was big fish of the day at 11 1/2" on the 4" worm. The panfish were hungrier than the bass thats for sure.

In all, no skunk, lots of fresh air, exercise and peace. Just gotta love it :D

  2. People in Venezuela are not paying world prices for the oil and gas that comes out of their ground. So why are we paying world prices for Canadian fuels. That is the bigger question.

Why a gas station charges this or that price is simply price fixing to max profits. Oil company, investors and the tax man all win. We get screwed. The bigger screw is the one all us Canadians get shafted with when we sell all our resources away and pay triple, or more, to buy it back. All the while, the boys on Wall St and Bay St. laugh while they make their puppets dance in Ottawa. Why do you think the main political parties have leaders that look pretty, but lack the necessary backbone to face real issues.

    That's my rant

  3. The sil I refer to is the actual pickled herring, in jars, in the different types of marinade. I may be using the Swede name for it.

In desperation I can always look for a Suomi Aitta, or the nearest IKEA.

How does this sound. A piece of hard rye, with a layer of cream cheese and a piece of sil on top. Washed down with a generous mouthful, or two, of beer.

  4. Oi Suomi, katso, sinun päiväs' koittaa, bigugli.

    Sinä olet tervetullut.

    (you are welcome?)

I regret My Finnish and Swedish is limited to cordial greetings. Gramp was a Swede, Gram a Finn from Karjala. THe solution was that we all spoke English.

You wouldn't happen to have a good recipe for making Sil? A few of the oldtimers would make it here using smelts.

All this reminescing has started up a craving for some pulla, rissa puri and some Lingonberry Brandy, or Peder Heering to wash it all down with.

  5. Commercial fishermen have always caught sturgeon in their nets. In the old days they were laid out on a farm field and plowed in as fertilizer. During the depression folks would wait for the boats to come in and hope they had caught a few sturgeon in the nets. One fish put a lot of meat on the table. Just because it isn't pretty doesn't mean it don't taste good

  6. There was a warm glow to the old naptha lamps that propane doesn't have. Maybe its just my imagination. Growing up, we did not see hydro or flush toilets til 1970. We had a couple of the smaller green lamps in the kitchen and hallway, but the main room had 2 big lanterns hanging from the rafters. The story was my uncle had 'liberated' them from the railroad. I used to listen to the old timers tellin their tales under the warm glow of those old lamps. The conversation got louder and much livlier as the men passed the bottle around. In the background there was the crackle of the fire from the old pot belly stove, and the aroma of baked goodies or biscuits heating up.

See what a simple picture can conjure up. I'd give just about anything to step back into time and sit in that room one more time on a Friday night and add my tales to those of the other Suomalainen.

Thank you for kindling a real warm and fuzzy with this thread :clapping:

    Tack sa mycket or Kiitos

  7. You can write it off your taxes, but it's still gonna hurt your bottom line unless you can get your customers to eat a 20% price hike everty 2 years. You still have less to put in your pocket.

Writing the MP is a way to make noise. Unfortunately, my MP ( a real blue) does not like me any more, and probably has my e-mail address on auto delete.

  8. Maid of the Mist docks for some monster smallmouth :)

I don't believe anglers are allowed by the docks any more. Problems with vandalism and liability.

Too early for the whirlpool. Send Paul at Cast Adventures a pm. He knows the river, upper and lower, very well. Puts you on fish.

  9. veg·e·tar·i·an (vj-târ-n)

    n.

    1. Old Indian word for poor fisherman

    2. May also be used to slander people that buy fish instead of catching them.

:lol::thumbsup_anim: I haven't heard #2 in years. I guess I'll clean off my screen and keyboard now.

There's just something foreign about buying fish unless it is in a can or jar.

  10. For under $200 total? Pfleuger President reel. A good, dependable mid range reel. Not overly expensive $70ish. I"ve put mine through a lot of abuse in 2 years.

As for the rod, if you are fishing walleye more than bass, lighter is better. I use a 5' light or ultralite for walleye. For bass It all depends on the style of fishing. Do you need a finesse rod or a tow truck and 50lb. cable? All I can suggest is find a rod that feels comfortable in your hand and has good sensitivity. There are a lot of good rods out there, and a lot of people have deep brand loyalties.

  11. Drifting is still my prefered means of searching out fish on new water or in tough conditions. I use the trolling motor for position control. When there are more than 2 in the boat, it also allows everyone an equal shot at fishing without snagging one another casting. Lots of people still drift fish. I must make 1000 harnesses a year for people (of course, 50 are just for me)

  12. Well I was down in Baton Rouge this week helpin' Lester with some stuff this week, and they were cuttin' up and haulin' all this beautiful Oak firewood that hurricane Gustov knocked over off to the landfills just to get rid of it!!!

The one tree, alone would heat my house for a month. Pity.
