Been thinking of how to catch Smelt through the ice. Due tell how do you?
Small micro tear drops; plain, tipped with maggots, waxies, eyeballs, red and pink yarns. Depending on the day, they range bottom to just below the hole. Today the bottom was where the bite was.

It was a slow day out there yesterday Bruce and wouldn't ya know it, my gf caught more perch than a few of us, lol.
How do you like Michelle's Lady Gaga pose?

Despite the rain we tested one of the ice holes. Results were a little disappointing. We found 4" of ice before the rain started, but the ice was deteriorating quickly with the heavy rains. By tomorrow evening it would not be safe.
Smellts are a lot smaller this year compared to last. Even so, managed enough to give the fryer a workout.
We will need cold weather before that ice is again good to go.

Good to see a successful outing Jacques.

That is a scary thought Beans. I've managed to avoid the white stripe, so far.

Too cute. Reminds me of my daughter. At 2 she took a litter of kittens and placed them in the compartment of her Sesame st. bus to take them for a ride. Patches was just frantic.

Great videos Simon. No wonder I don't get any work done around the house. They're worse than hypnotism.

Pst week has been great for getting out on some of the local ice. Heck, even the fish were playing nice for a couple of days. Regretably the high cell stalled the bite the past 2 days but the weather was too beautiful to pass up.
Tuesday's volunteers.
Rob d"s squeze showing him how it is done
A couple of the local thugs
Now if only the ice at the smelt grounds would firm up.

The biggest thing these kids are missing is fresh air fun.
A good game of hide and seek would last a 1/2 hour a turn. Do kids even know what tag, buck buck, hand ball or red rover are any more?
You can't play a game of baseball during recess or lunchtime at school. Show up with a bat and it is confiscated and the child suspended.
We played pond hockey and schools had outdoor rinks. Even in the 80's I was taking my turn at flooding the rink at night with my neighbours out in Scarberia.
We also had bb guns, slingshots and firecrackers

So nice to see the entire family having fun together.

I feel sooo sorry for the under 30's cause they don't know what they are missing. They're all plugged in, connected and bored to death. 2525 is happening too soon( have to be 50+ to understand that one).

a bongholder? i envision some hippy laying on a river bank napping with his fishing line tied to his pinky toe and worm on a red/white bobber in the river!
What's so strange about that. I've been known to need long naps
under the shade of a big willow with line tied to my finger. Great way to mellow out.

Congratulations and well done Botbot

Well done. You tried something new, got some help, and reaped a fine reward.

like they say, the rules change under the ice and it is going to take some time to figure it out.

Gotta like seeing a little happy camper, He needs his moment in the spotlight too Dad

Lots of reasons to be smiling.

I think it's going to take a couple of seasons to figure out an ice pattern out in the K lakes.

Got out to the pond for a few hours with Rob D (the son) for some perchin. Not the most active bite, but enough to entice tomorrow's breakfast.
All caught on teardrops tipped with salties.
Lots of surface water but the ice was still solid.
Some one was asking about smelts?

Head removed and gutted rolled in a dry mix or batter. 30 seconds to cook in hot oil. Now if you were getting the big coastal smelts from the maritimes, about a minute to cook.
No limit on smelts and can be netted in springtime.
