  1. OFC Friends: Does anyone know how to input a specific set of coordinates into an E Trex? In other words, if someone were to give you a set of coordinates so you can find the spot, how can you enter them? As usual I've read the manual and apparently am too stupid to figure it out. Thanks to all who respond.
  2. I have had great success w/ Georgian Bay smallies on a 3 in. white Gulp twister and a 1/4 oz jig (chartreuse preferred). I often tip with half a crawler while hunting walleyes and catch a lot of smallies by accident. That and small crankbaits like a thin fin work well too. blue/silver/firetiger seem to work best.
  3. Solo: Nice pergola. we enjoy ours a lot. Where are you heading to out of White River? Am heading there next week to Esnagi and am wondering if you are headed there too. Regards.
  4. My Dad has caught the 2 biggest pike of his life--20 and just over 22 lbs--both at night. Both were caught on Geo Bay while trolling for walleyes w 7 in. Rapalas. one Rap had about a 6 inch alewife attached to it that he had snagged and simply left on the lure. The 22 lb one was caught around 11 at night. The fish broke the line as we were trying to remove the lure in the water next to the boat after a quick measurement/weighing (a big pike thrashing in the boat at night is not a good thing for you or the pike). All he said after catching it was "that was a $6 lure!" Lesson: big water, big lures, big fish, sometimes even at night.
  5. mates: A friend has inquired of this camp and wanted me to post an inquiry about it. I am not familiar with this camp, though I have fished nearby Georgian Bay Fishing Camp for years. He is specifically interested in the walleye and pike fishing there, as well as impressions of the camp from folks who have stayed there. Their website is impressive for sure... Thanks to all who respond.
  6. Brian: Esnagi is about an hr north of Wawa--you can fly in or train in at white river. great walleye fishery--lots of numbers and good quality too, though huge fish are uncommon (unlike georgian bay where i fish where its just the opposite). It's a bit pricey but the camp, lodge, and cabins are first rate. service and food is off the charts. big pike fishery too. lots of lunkers. have been there twice and am going back this august. counting the days. let me know if you want more info.
  7. I object to that! I am a lawyer and I'm no bottom feeder. I suspend alot, but I don't bottom feed...leave it to the Swiss...I'm on record as being all for pike abuse..with a Williams Wobbler of course...
  8. My take on this board is entirely different. It is one of the most civil boards I have seen. By and large, if people disagree, there is a minimal amount of name calling and personal attacks. In fact, I made an observation the other day to my son: as an American, I have been increasingly appalled at the complete lack of decorum and the instant launching of crude and shameless personal attacks on a number of "american" Internet sites like CNN, or even ESPN. By comparison, this Board is refreshingly civil compared to those sites. In my years travelling to Canada (over 30 years now and counting), I have come to the belief, rightly or wrongly, that by and large, my experience with Canadians is that they are much more tempered, civil, and laid back than the folks in my country. There are always exceptions to the rule, of course. But we are becoming more polarized every day here, shouting louder at each other at every turn, and it's disappointing. I'm no expert, but I don't get that same feeling here or at other Canadian sites I visit. I also think that as avid fishermen, we are generally a more affable lot and that contributes too to the largely good vibes on this Board. So hat's off to OFC and its members. It's one of my favorite sites around.
  9. I've fished NE corner of Geo. Bay for over 30 yrs now (at a cam pnear Bustard Islands and the mouth of the French). I've seen weeks where we absolutely slayed the walleye. In 2007 4 of us (including 2 kids and a novice) caught almost 200 lbs of walleye . we averaged almost 4 lbs per fish, including 4 ten lb'ers. In 97 8 of us caught 125 in 2 days. By contrast, this yr was horrible. Was scratching my head all week. Other yrs have been sparse as well. The common denominator for us over the yrs has been: we can always find the big fish. Finding consistent numbers, particularly the smaller eaters, has always been our challenge. I think it is primarily because there are so many shoals, dropoffs, and access to deep water that it makes eliminating unproductive water a real challenge. Also, unlike many other smaller lakes, there aren't a lot of well defined open water weedbeds, except in the shallow bays ,which are often weed choked. It is a challenging fishery, but it can pay off in monster eyes, and big pike too. Like any big body of water, it takes time to find the honey holes...
  10. Solo: I loved your post and got quite a vicarious kick out of it. I understand completely why you didn't divulge location, and it makes more sense now as I read the outfitter's e-mail. Ontario is a huge, wonderful place full of honey holes. I've found a few and had a few days like you had recently, and I hope to find some more. And it makes it all the sweeter when you find them yourself.
  11. For me it's a matter of ergonomics. Try casting a 4-5 inch swimbait or a large jerkbait for a long time on a spinning reel and it will take a toll on the wrists. Same thing with trolling with a big bait w/ a spinner. It's nice to take a break from the spinning reel with a different profile reel like a baitcaster. Also, the other posters make a good point about the ability of a baitcaster to put some muscle and real cranking power to a large fish headed for wood or thick weeds. Give them a shot by practicing with a rubber sinker in the backyard until you get proficient. Once you get comfortable with how to control them, I bet you'll enjoy them and add them to your arsenal. Hope this helps and good luck. Only 4 days until we leave for NE corner of Georgian Bay. Hope a 10 lb eye and a 20 lb pike are in my boys' near future....
  12. Welcome to OFC--great source for fishing info. The posters who recommended the bracket mount from Cabela's are spot on--those suction cups are horrible. The bracket is the ticket. Secondly, I bought a simple Eagle portable unit about 12 yrs ago and it is still kicking. I keep waiting for it to die but it keeps going and has never failed me on my yearly Canada trip. Pretty much sold me on them.
  13. I've had great success on Gulp (3 in) for smallies and a some big walleye. Ran out of it on my Canada trip last yr, so I won't make that mistake again. I'm impressed with it. Only downside is that if you leave it on the hook for too long in the boat , you'll need a chainsaw to get it off the hook.....
  14. who left a comment on my blog in an effort to raise money for local food bank. The response amongst Canadians was great, and I wrote about it here http://nwbullseye.blogspot.com/2009/03/com...-update_08.html Not surprising though. One of many reasons why Canadians and fishermen are generally special people in my book. Thanks for participating, and I can't wait to spend some time (and $$) in God's country in June...
  15. I'm a certified fishing nut but my day job is an attorney (hold laughter please). Recently I started a blog and came up w/ an idea to help our local food bank, which is strained beyond belief. If anyone goes to the blog and leaves a comment, our firm will donate $1 per comment, up to $500. Here's a link www.nwbullseye.blogspot.com I apologize if some feel this is not the right forum, but I think it's for a good cause and as worthy as some other off topic posts. Anyway, I promise that any of my future contributions to this site will be strictly related to things like swimbaits, live bait rigs, shore lunch recipies, and other cool walleye stuff. Only 102 days till Gerogian Bay, but whose counting......
  16. I love P-Line. It's all I use. I found it really holds up to the rocks/zebras of Georgian Bay. However, last year for the 1st time I bought a huge spool of it. Wasn't happy w/ it. I think I got a bad spool. I'm going back to the 300 yd version, which has never failed me. For a few yrs I experimented w/ Trilene and other lines on my various reels, and P-Line was far and away the best.
  17. As an American, I think they're hilarious. It's perfectly Canadian--to the point, with some good old fashioned humor thrown in for good measure. This past summer I bought a 12 pack and noticed a free T-shirt giveaway on the box, so I bought another 12 (so I could get 2) and went online to fill out the info. I got one that said on the back: "Answer honestly: would you prefer to come from a country known for apologizing or famous for being rude?" I laughed like h*** when I read it. I wear it to the gym occasionally and sometimes get this wierd, "hey I think they're dissing us" stare when people read it. But most laugh and say: "yeah, pretty much on the money........" Wish I knew how to get another one.....this one is gettin kinda ripe and may not make it North this year. Long live Canada, Molson, shore lunches, Timmies, poutine, and ketchup potato chips...
  18. Pork and sauerkraut, along with some kielbassa and hot dogs thrown in for good measure. Served over mashed potatoes. Very midwestern. two heaping bowls ='s gastric nightmare by halftime of the Orange Bowl, but it's well worth the pain.........
  19. Chris: Check out www.georgianbayfishing.com. Is 500 mi from NE Ohio --8.5 hr drive or less if you're closer to cleveland. it's a fishing camp 18 mi out in Georgian Bay about 10 min by boat from the mouth of the French. Lots of good smallie action and the camp is affordable by Ontario lodging standards. Might just be the right fit for you. Contact me privately if you want more information.
  20. Thanks for sharing. Neil was "GOOD?" By definition, isn't he always GREAT? Sounds like it was a fantastic show. Too bad he's not coming to Ohio area. By the way, he's introducing a 23 song set from a series of tapes of a 1968 coffeehouse gig in Michigan--his 1st time solo after leaving Buff. Springfield. It's on my XMAS list, along with another copy of "Shakey" that a friend "borrowed." A hilarious unauthorized bio of his life. Check out the disc set on his website www.neilyoung.com. From a certified Neilaholic. Long may he run.
  21. I've had a simple Eagle portable unit for well over 10 yrs now. Every year I drag it out again to head to God's country (Geo. Bay) and I wonder if this is the year it will konk out. And it performs without a hitch. When it finally dies, I'm buying another Eagle. Couldn't be happier with it.
  22. Here's an old time carp doughball recipe from my youth growing up on the Ohio River. It worked wonderfully, and is guaranteed, according to my sage Dad: 3 cups yellow corn meal 2 cups flour 1 cup sugar. Mix and wrap and tie in a rag. boil for 20 min. take out of water and let it cool. work and break up and work again until it forms 1 large sticky ball poke idiot in it and pour some liquid anise in it. It's even good to eat if the fishing's slow! BW
