Well, Restoule was pretty much a waste

And that's the most important part. -
That's one of the red-herrings the hoax crowd constantly drags out, the 'fact' that the computers weren't powerful enough. When I gave a talk on this for the 40th anniversary I told the audience that the Lunar Module was actually equipped with two computers more powerful than anything we have today. Capable of visually and aurally acquiring information, with the ability to rapidly adjust to changing flight parameters, and capable of rapidly exchanging complex and even abstract ideas between the two of them in order to co-ordinate actions. Then I showed a picture of those computers - two human brains. Just about brought the house down!

Agreed, I would like to know too. Some people used to gripe that his prices were high, but I don't comparison shop for wee stuff like tackle so I wouldn't know. And so what if they were a bit high? Because you sure couldn't beat the convenience if you're heading north and realized at the last second that you needed something, and people are always willing to pay more for convenience.

Not your fault, or the others who chimed in with what was probably great advice. Hardly got anywhere, my messed up right shoulder (old old old injury) is getting too old for solo canoeing in gusty winds, and the outboard troubles kept the Zodiac on shore. Did get a fairly nice paddle to Hazel lake, but as I said above, that didn't exactly work out either. If anyone can tell me how to get a hookset when a bass has a mouthful of water lilies, I might listen. -
Most don't, really. But like a lot of other crazies they make noise out of all proportion to their numbers and get more attention than they deserve. What they deserve is zero.
-
Once canoeing up the Humber River here in Toronto and saw a green heron doing that. It was so engrossed we canoed within arms length of it. Guess what I had forgotten to take with me that day? If you answered 'camera', take a bow. :wallbash:
-
Think that sort of noise bothers me? I spent 10 years 'camping' with the infantry, think again! Went back to the trout spot on Saturday afternoon before heading south, still no luck. I had something give a good tug on the spinner, but no hook-up.
-
Actually I believe it was Benjamin Franklin who is credited with saying "3 may keep a secret if 2 of them are dead." Apollo spacecraft had three man crews, and they haven't said a single thing that would indicate anything other than what is on the books.

Forgot to mention; the throttle linkage may need some work too. At times when I was moving it with the motor off it seemed like it had only two settings. Can't see it missing neutral, so I don't know if it was only finding neutral and forward or neutral and reverse. Didn't run into that problem while it was running.

Wait a second - you managed to find a beautiful wife who goes back-country camping, canoeing, and fishing with you?! I hate you. I really, really, hate you. Mods, can we have this guy banned before we all turn green with envy?

Yeah, it lines up quite well with the prevailing winds and they whip right down it from west to east. Whitecaps every day. -

Nah, didn't do the tower trail. Monica has a kneecap that's been wired together, and my daughter has a tendon issue on one foot, so strenuous hiking is not really in the cards. And personally, while the view from the top may be great, I am more impressed canoeing past the cliff and looking up at it in all its splendour, it really is a magnificent sight. Can't really see it from on top of it! -
Gotcha. I'll see if there's some sort of maintenance manual on-line, knowing my in-laws the original was probably thrown out within minutes of the motor's purchase.
-
Thanks, but I have no idea what a 'check ball' is. Is it possible that after letting the tank sit in on position, probably on end, for a while, I could just siphon off what's on the bottom and clear it that way?
-
Hmmm... Never thought of that. Do those portable tanks pick up from the bottom, or do they have a float?

For me, being in my canoe means dawn. The winds are light or non-existent so you can easily paddle, and you don't have to worry about getting back in the dark. Plus if you want to do some photography it's impossible to beat morning light for beauty. And the fishing is great! Well, it's great IF you're in the right spot AND you know what you're doing. Which means that for me the fishing is usually NOT great.

It's been at least a year, perhaps two (I'm not going to wake up the father-in-law right now to ask), since this thing was fired up, but he assured me that there was fuel stabiliser in it. Got it set up on the Zodiac, tugged the cord, no start. No problem, it's been a while. Second tug, turned over and purred like a kitten, nice, off we go. Got halfway across Restoule Lake and it starts dying, rpm drops off and it almost stops. Check bulb, nice and firm. Confirm vent is open, yep, check fuel line, no kinks. In desperation I pulled the primer knob, and it runs a lot smoother, and at a higher rpm than with it in. Run it for a while like that, push the knob in, starts running rough again. Out with the primer, smooth again. But after a while it starts running rough with the knob out. Push it in, rpm drops and motor stalls. Hell of a time getting it started again (flooded?), almost ready to start flagging down a passerby for a tow. Finally got it going and decided that it's better to just head back to the camp and not risk getting stuck. Next day tried it again, same thing. Thus endeth the experiment. Time to build a sawhorse to put it on so that I can tear it apart over the winter and try to figure out what's wrong. I'm no mechanic, but how hard can it be? (waits for the screams of everyone saying "A LOT HARDER THAN YOU THINK!")

Got some good info from a board member (unless he pipes up I won't mention who in case someone decides my lack of success was his fault - it probably wasn't), but had just about zero luck. Winds were nearly always too high for comfortable solo canoeing, and the motor on the inflatable was acting up so that was a no-go. More on that in a separate thread. Got over to Hazel Lake, had a good size largemouth grab on to my Scum Frog, about 1.5 to 2lbs, but spat the hook just as I got it to the canoe. I think I'll give up on chucking a frog over pads because the chances of landing one are incredibly slim. The fish first gets a mouthful of pads which act as a very effective buffer between its mouth and the hooks, the chances of getting a good set are just about nil. Happened again a few minutes later. Got some more info from a fellow OFCer who was across the road from our site (again, no names unless he volunteers) about a good spot for some rainbows and bass. Drove there and found the bass spot, landed quite a few rock bass, one was the largest I have ever seen, one pike about 18", and a few smallmouth. No rainbows to be found, but it's probably my technique (or rather my lack of technique). Biggest downer of the week was having my son's tackle box stolen from the boat on Tuesday night. There were two tackle boxes and four rods in it, the only thing they took was my son's, which also had a waterproof pouch attached containing maps of the lake and suggestions for fishing spots. If anyone tries to sell you a 3-tray Plano with a full complement of tackle, let me know, there is some very identifiable stuff in there. Obviously, no fish pics. The birding was pretty good, I have to contact the park naturalist and let them know they can add a few species to their list. The Ranger Point Trail is a very nice one, short but very interesting side trails down to Stormy Lake, with some good lookout areas.

Absolute balderdash. Don't listen to the hoax believers, they are certifiably brain-dead. There is nothing suspicious at all. I have presented on this subject, and been interviewed on the CBC about it. There is no evidence of anything suspicious, and plenty of evidence that everything was exactly as history records it.

NF 250 000 000 mile one way trip to Mars

Um, any chance we could skip the politics and get back to WAY COOL!? -

Looks quite nice, and I can guarantee you'll never see another one. Ever notice that you can take a walk around an entire provincial park camp site and never see two of the same tent? I think they only make one of each then destroy the pattern.

Urban legend actually, it cost NASA $0.00, all explained here. There were very good reasons for NOT using a pencil on American spacecraft as opposed to Russian ones. -
Now THAT... is a trip report.
