The body of evidence just builds and builds for global warming
cram replied to scuro's topic in General Discussion
meteor strikes do happen. Maybe not in our lifetimes, or our grand-grand-grand-grand-kids lifetimes, but on a geological scale its pretty certain. Look it up. Though i assume you're referring to hollywood movies about asteroids.........when is the last time you heard thousands of scientists or leaders of countries acknowledge this as an issue? alien invasion - same thing (movies????.....or have you actually heard scientists and presidents/prime ministers talk about this?) shift of planet axis -- in the history of our planet happens pretty frequently. Simple matter of the core (a big chunk of iron) flipping. Not really that "out-there". Look it up. \ -

t Warming (at extreme levels) could oddly cause an ice age. Its weird, weird stuff....and very tough to forecast. -

I can't explain his comments for him, but i think the warm period you're referring to lasted hundreds of years (400?). It was also considered an anomaly, as was the ice age. I'm not sure if anyone knows why they happened....lots of theories about differences in solar energy (sun spots?), volcanoes (ash in the atmosphere blocking the sun), ocean currents, etc. Natural cycles do happen. And, if you're an alien biologist studying earth (or a future non-human historian) I guess you could call this (as in right now) natural as well. Something i found interesting (and is kind of good news for us) -- national geographic did a neat program (think its on their website as well) called 6 degrees or something like that. Described theories on what happens to the world with every 1 degree of increased temperature. The good part....according to them Canada is basically the best place to be as temperatures warm a little (longer growing season, etc, and the last safe place on hte planet if/when temperatures get really extreme. -

You could be 5'6" or 6'6". Fill us in on your specs and its easier. -

the world has gone through cycles in the past, but none of them were because of us. Many of these rapid cycles also culminated in major extinctions and ecological change.....so those of us saying "its okay because its a natural cycle" need to think about what "okay" means. -

Interesting. Looks like their theory was the exact opposite -- that the pollution would block the sunlight (versus keep the heat in). The ice age stuff is pretty speculative but our (warmer) northern temperatures do depend heavily on that gulf stream, and lots of scientists think it'll get altered when the ice caps melt. I don't really get why. -

That's interesting. I didn't hear that (or was too young to care). What was the theory? -

No data at all. Just a comment. There is lots of scientific data to show the earth is getting warmer though. I guess your argument is that this is a natural cycle? -

This does happen naturally, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be alarming. Besides, its simple (grade 9 or 10?) chemistry that CO2 holds heat....and its even simpler chemistry (grade 9) that burning fossil fuels (or wood, paper, virtually anything carbon based) generates CO2 + H20. whether you believe in the politics or not (and for some reason this seems to be a political issue) when you know that burning fuel generates C02 (and we burn a LOT of it) and that C02 holds heat....what's the big disagreement about? -
...or just if there's a creek or waterway that i can follow? There's a creek i would love to fish but never have because i don't know who owns the property (though am pretty sure it is owned)
-
Fair enough. So i can't get fined for trespassing if there are no signs?
-
a lot of lawyers on this site apparently. If it is his property, he can have the police or MNR press trespassing charges (assume that's what is meant on the tag) though for the most part i think they just ask people to leave. Maybe this is his way of showing the MNR or police that you've been asked/warned before and are a repeat offender. It looks very templated to me. I think the key is to find out if its private property. If it is, then he's probably just an irritated landowner (esp. if that creek sees a lot of traffic). He could probably be more polite, but then some of the comments in this thread are really bad form as well. It goes both ways. btw - there are OFTEN substantial charges on hunters for trespassing on private property. I have heard of 500-1000 dollar fines. Not sure about fishing.
-
He clearly thinks he owns it, and there must be a lot of `trespassers` otherwise would not have gone to the trouble of creating those forms. I wonder if the form actually comes from the MNR or if he was instructed by them on what to put on the form (seems a little too templated to be just created by him).

The mnr nets muskies on simcoe in the spring. Someone else here said they've seen nets on georgian bay.

I have a similar rec kayak and have tried fishing from it but would love to attach a rod holder for trolling. Any recommendations on where to place one??

Fantastic post. Thanks for the lesson. Can you really catch kings casting this way? Better at night or during the day (morning/evening)? When does the season typically start?

Restoule is a really tough lake. Not sure if its because of the baitfish or whatever, but its one of the toughest lakes in ontario --- no doubt.
-
Thank you for the map info. From what i remember you like largemouth? Look up Hicks lake. Small lake you can walk to (semi marked trail) from Restoule. West half of restoule and off the north end. Its not incredibly convenient but hte best LM i have seen in that area (by far). Second is Hazel Lake....off of Stormy. Its a VERY short (30 feet?) portage in from stormy. Just to the left of the big cliff there's a beach. Trail just to the left of it.
-
Look forward to the report. Curious - where did you find maps with depths? I looked and couldn't find anything except for restoule lake.

I disagree with one of the previous posters. Advise AGAINST getting a flat-back or motor-mount canoe. While its nice to have the option to use a motor, paddling a flat-back is a LOT of work. There's just so much drag. You work harder and go slower. Really cuts into your enjoyment.

I have no idea about the toxicity of lead, but many birds (like loons) dive quite deep.

If you're up for a canoe-in, camp, and canoe-out you might try Booth Lake in Algonquin via access point 17. Its considered by many to be the most beautiful lake in Algonquin, is a relatively short (part day) canoe-in from the access point which also sees less traffic than others. One of the best parts -- aside from the fantastic lake trout fishing there's a population of fast-growing pike moving through that lake system (likely from feeding on the lakers). Also smallmouth, and short day trips to speck lakes.
