Misfish you were not wrong, the method for years from hide depots etc. is to place rock salt on the hides. It did remove some of the moisture from the hides and then they were shipped to the tannery in order to make leather from the hides. If you wanted to keep the hair on the hides then you would have to use fine salt and not necessarily table grade either (far too expensive) you can get fine salt from co-ops etc if you want to salt a hide to leave the hair on. Today's methods and advancements in taxidermy have come along way. I do not use any salt at all and have tanning drums that just simply allow me to use chemicals under pressure that will allow the chemicals into the hide. This process softens the hide and tans it at the same time and the next stage will be to shave it on my fleshing machine before mounting them. The last specimen that I mounted made the latest cover of Ontario Monster Whitetail magazine and it was done without using salt. Small projects such as whiletail deer tails for later use needs only be kept in salt and air dried. Regards, Sam

Well let's see I seem to do a lot of taxidermy work and have for many years so what I would do is use fine salt and cover it completely to get all of the fluids out of the skin. Then let it air dry and you should be fine for the use that you have in mind. I tan all of mine whenever I tan deer capes for mounting and that way they last longer. Tanning process is a little more difficult to do for beginners and you really do not need to do tan that tail if you want to keep it for making jigs. Fine salt works better than rock salt as it gets right into the skin immediately preventing bacteria from setting in. Hope this is of help to you. Regards, Sam

I don't have a forum on my site however, I do post what happens on the Bay of Quinte once the ice fishing starts up. Most of my info is where the fish are caught and where to stay away from due to poor ice conditions etc. Regards, Sam

Nice walleyes and great job getting them. Friday was a difficult day and I didn't get out until approximately 9:30 am which is a little late on a sunny day. Hope to see you again on your next trip up here. Regards, Sam -
Thanks for the responses guys, I guess I was hoping that something got posted that I did not know about or something along that line. Maybe I can catch them ion the act next time and and show them that at their age they can still crap their pants and that they would need diapers. Sam

Hi Everyone, I noticed on another thread about a thief going through Mattones vehicle and left it in the same condition as to what happened to me 3 weeks ago. Three weeks ago Saturday night or should I say early Sunday morning a thief enjoyed being in my truck. I always lock my truck in the driveway and this particular night I went out to retrieve something from the truck and I did not lock it. Sunday morning at 8:am I went to get into my truck and noticed that the glove compartment was completely emptied out and all of the contents were either on the floor or on the seat. I had my crossbow in the back seat of the truck and some of my hunting gear and it was not touched. The only thing missing was the face of my radio that is required for me to listen to my radio. I also had a couple of lottery tickets that I kept in the truck and they were missing as well. I called the OPP and they said that someone would call me within the next couple of hours and I am still waiting for their call (3 weeks later). I did not place an insurance claim in for the radio for reasons that I am over 20 years claim free with my insurance company and I would hate to see my rates go up for a frivolous little claim. There seems to be a lot of this going on and in the same manner. I had a friend have their car rifled through as well only a couple of months prior to mine. My question would be what the hell are they looking for? also is this some sort of thief operation that I am not aware of where they will leave valuable merchandise alone and rifle through the glove compartments only? Is there some sort of site for these thieves to get educated in operating int eh exact manner that is being posted everywhere? Please shed some light on this subject. Best regards, Sam

Forrest you had a tough weekend on the BOQ and so did all of the regular anglers that come up here. Friday was a warm and sunny day and the walleye headed deep to get away from the sun light. We only landed a pike on Friday all day and fished it hard. The water temperatures varied from 52 degrees at the GAP to 48 in parts of Long Reach just prior to Thompson's Point. There were a lot of boats on Friday out there and only a couple of them landed walleye and the numbers were extremely low. This week is shaping up to be very promising and I am confident that everyone coming up next weekend for the G2G will do extremely well out there. Most of the walleyes that were landed by anglers are being taken at Keith's Shoal and the Bat Cave. These locations are just east of the Glenora Ferry and on the south shore. The next spot that is producing is at the funnel area of Thompson's Point and Sherman's Point where it funnels into Long Reach. Work the funnel areas where walleye have to head to in order to stage at the mouth of the rivers and you will do well. The south side of the GAP has a ton of fish there and they are in approximately 50-60 feet down in 90-110 FOW. You have to get down top the 50 foot level to be successful. Dimpsy's, Torpedo Divers, and down riggers will work best for you. If you are rigging make sure that you have at least 30-40 feet of line out before you attach it to the ball and send it down 50 feet. The GAP is a great place to get your trophy fish and the walleye there right now are in the 10-12 lb range. The big hawgs are still not in yet and you will see a huge increase in activity in that area beginning anytime now. With the full moon phase coming in you know that it means walleye time. Whenever you are thinking of coming up again Forrest send me a pm or stop in on your way by and I will show you on a map what is happening in the area. I will be pleased to inform you where the fish are being aggressive and what baits they are attacking. I would also use the largest baits that you have in your tackle box, just lately I have been getting them on Jointed XRap's 13's as those lures seem to imitate large shads. The walleye are following the gizzard shads into the Bay and the gizzard shads are rather a large bait. Remember that these walleyes are migrating from the lake and their diet consists of large bait fish. Hope this info is of help to some of you and enjoy your trip up here. Best regards, Sam

This is in fact sad and a tragic ending that I was hoping would not turn out the way it. Our condolences to the family and friends. I went through some of the posts and I know some feel that it was over a trivial issue such as an Xbox game. I know Brandon's parents will be living with heir decision for the rest of their lives and will blame themselves for it, however I see it differently. I do not see where the parents went wrong here at all. Being a responsible parent myself I at times have our boys away from their games which seems to consume them on a daily basis. The minute they get home from school they think of the Wii games, or Xbox etc. and there is another life out there as well as gaming. I know that when I have our boys end their sessions of the gaming experience that they are having they do not run away as a result of it and get upset with our decision as parents. Gaming has become a way of entertaining kids sort of as a babysitting method so that some parents do not have to bother spending time with their children. The kids get consumed by it and then the parents have difficulty weening them from it. I am hurt that a precious little boy has lost his life over his actions of running away. There is no one to blame on either side for what has happened here and hopefully many will learn something positive from this tragedy. I know we spend every night hugging our children and telling them that we love them dearly and tonight there will be a little extra of it. We will pray for the family as they will have many difficult years ahead of them, it is definitely a difficult situation. Kind regards, Sam

Hey Glen, All in due time I will drive you nuts with some porn for your eyes only. Sam -
Hi Everyone, I had a couple of friends up from the Brantford area fishing the last 3-4 days and they boated 22 walleyes from a range of 9-12 lbs. All of their walleyes were caught east of the Glenora Ferry. I will have to wait until they get home ask them to email me their pics and I will post them. I should be out later this week and next and I will be pleased to post my success. The weather seems to be holding quite well for fishing and the pits for the Big Bucks that seem to still be nocturnal everything in pre-rut stage, it won't be long for them fellas to make the dinner table as well. For those of you coming up to fish feel free to drop me an email and I will be pleased to let you know where to head to and what we are getting our walleyes on. Best regards, Sam

Walleyes are coming in to Quinte in huge numbers.
DT10Sam replied to DT10Sam's topic in General Discussion
Hi Don, Yes I was aware of you fishing there and I probably won't be around much this weekend or on the Bay. I will probably be in the woods checking to see if there is any activity from the bucks in the area. All I have been spotting are does and fawns. My feelings are leave the women and kids alone and go for Big Daddy Buck, so I will be searching the woods and then probably next week I might sneak out on the Bay again. I did learn a ton from Sheldon on the sonar readings, I now am able to distinguish between sheep heads and walleye on the screen and steer clear of them. What I did like about Sheldon was that he is a Reef Runner man and knows how great those baits work. That is what I caught mine on and the others were also caught on the reef runners. Sheldon is a great person to share information with and it will certainly come in handy down the road. Regards, Sam -

Thanks guys, I now know that Sheldon was holding out on me not telling me the weight I stated it was 10 lbs and I was wrong again. This past weekend I spent it with Sheldon who is extremely knowledgeable in the walleye industry and my main focus was to learn how to read sonars/fish finders etc. Guess what I knew absolutely nothing......(you know I was the guy that thought he knew how to read fish finders....WRONG) Sheldon's help was huge in this area and I know that we will cross paths on many occassion out there on the Bay of Quinte. Regards, Sam -
Hi Everyone, It has been a while since I have posted on this board and thought that I would come on and only post some fishing reports and keep all of you up to date as to what is happening in the Quinte area. The walleye fishing is doing extremely well for those that know how to fish for them. I would like to thank all of you that have sent emails and I have answered all of them. I am winterizing my boat presently and will be putting it away. I will be out on the water on a regular basis as there have been many in the store that would like to go out on the Bay of Quinte and try their luck. I have offered to go out with them and help them get some of the huge walleyes that migrate into the area. Another interesting note is that many of you like to use the Mann's Stretch 20+ and usually in the colours of Dr. Death and Blueberry Muffin etc. These lures are no longer available from the manufacturer, it seems that the numbers that they produce are small in comparison to other lures they manufacture and those lures were a small market strictly for the Bay of Quinte. Ironically I ran Dr. Death this past Saturday and Sunday and had no luck with it. It is definitely a good producing lure and I will not retire it as of yet. The lures that we caught our walleye on were Reef Runners and Tail Dancers TD11's in many different colours (no there is not a secret colour). I will be out on the bay a few more times during the month of November whenever I am not bow hunting and I will be pleased to post results and where they were caught. For all of you that are coming up for your get together feel confident that the walleyes will be here, we marked huge pods on the weekend at the Gap and all of our walleye were caught west of the Glenora Ferry and not east of it...........so there are plenty of walleye in the Picton area already and the aggressive ones are being caught and some are extremely hard to coax to take your bait if you do not know how to fish for them. Here is a decent size walleye caught on Saturday of course it does look average size when it is held up against a small guy like me I look forward to seeing most of you in the next couple of months. Kind regards, Sam

I am confident in stating that the Okuma V series which I personally own and use has any issues you can get an over the counter replacement on it. The Okuma series is a good reel and just like all others there are some that have problems. I know as a shop owner I have sent many other reels in for repairs and/or replacement such as Shimano, Quantum etc. We sell them all here and if the warranty on Okuma were not satisfactory we would simple not carry their products. We operate on customer service from the manufacturer all the way to the customer. If I have on e in stock I would replace it for you Kemper...............they are a good reel and Okuma stands behind their products. Usually the ones that have negative comments are always the ones that prefer their own brand of reels that they purchase and are quick at putting down competitor products. I have personally sent may other manufacturer's reels back for repairs and replacements, if there was perfect reel we would be selling them exclusively. This thread has been blown out of proportion by some immature individuals that have nothing else better to do then stir the pot. It is for these reasons many such as myself that have been long standing members on OFC and do not post on a regular basis. Well time to take the wife and kids fishing......hopefully Kemper gets this resolved before ignorance of a couple fairly new posters feel they have been attacked. This thread has also run its course and I am confident that the mods will handle it properly. Best regards, Sam

Hi Kemper, Okuma policy is over the counter exchange........I would take it back to where you purchased and have them replace it. If you do not have any luck I will give you a number of who to call ...............Canadian Distributor. Regards, Sam

Can someone from Toronto Area enlighten me
DT10Sam replied to holdfast's topic in General Discussion
Well Toronto Mayer David Miller is not well liked amongst the outdoors people in this area. His agenda is so far left that it isn't funny. I am confident that he is pro Liberal and has the premier in his pockets for personal reasons. I have posted some signs in my store and they are totally true, Sign #1 "2,000,000 registered firearm owners killed no one yesterday." Sign #2 "Criminals love gun control; it makes their job safer." Sign #3 "Guns only have two enemies; Rust and Toronto Mayor David Miller." It seems that Toronto is making the news as a result of their crime rate with their crime gangs and evicting a couple of legitimate gun clubs who do not have criminals as members is really not the answer. Residents in this area (strong hunting and fishing community) are strongly recommending to shop elsewhere other than Toronto as a result of the actions of Mayor David Miller. There will always be controversy over these issues and I definitely do not believe what David Miller is doing nad I do support Julian Fantino is getting tough on those that committ crimes with guns. Of course this is just my opinion. Best regards, Sam -
If Tybo votes for you .........that should move you up to #7. You got more voted from here. Regards, Sam

I have been staying clear of commenting on most threads due to the fact that there are far too many that wish to bash others etc and being an owner of a shop I sometimes have to bite my tongue on some of the things that get posted here as it might reflect on my business, and today's society there are many that require us sponsors or shop owners etc to be politically correct. I know that I have posted my comments on other boards in regards to the fishing in the area and I get immediately stomped on for telling the truth. Seems that I might be hurting the area if I post the truth, however I do feel comfortable stating other wise..............just like on this thread this fish is definitely not a chinook and I feel that the thread should be locked to prevent any bashing to the angler etc. I know that the mods are monitoring this thread closely to prevent some immature posters from starting to bash........... there might be an error here by the angler and then again there might not be. The case is that there is a proud angler that posted his catch that he caught from a pier and he felt that he harvested a chinook salmon. Sometimes it is better to send a pic to one of the mods or one of the most experienced anglers on this forum to get a correct identification if you are not sure of the species of fish. Spiel is extremely knowledgeable of the species as seen in other posts etc. so he would be a good person to contact in a case such as this. To be politically correct I then decided to side with Spiel so that I would not receive flamed emails as I have in the past. It is time to lock this thread and move on and to side on the politically correct nice salmon, (I do know what species this is). Regards, Sam
-
Spiel is right Coho and not Atlantic.
-
Pretty sure that is not a chinook check the tail on it and it will tell you that it is another salmon....most likely an Atlantic. I have been fishing chinooks for some time and the young shakers that we get definitely do not have the same tail as the one in the pic and the colours are different. You will have google some pics and you will see that it is not a chinook. Regards, Sam
