  1. Looks like a great day on the water. Careful going topless in pics around here, these guys are cruel
  2. The reason I was using the jaw spreaders and my buddy wasnt, was that I was just getting over gout in both my hands and couldnt grip anything too tight. When I tried to hold up the first fish, it got away from me and fell all over the boat, so we got the spreaders out. We werent too worried about damaging their mouths, because they were all destined for hot oil in the very near future. On a side note, there have been discussions here in the recent past about asians, white pails etc. As you can see my buddy is chinese. The only thing on any fish we kept this week that wasn't wasted were the fins. These pike were fileted in the fish cleaning shed. The heads went to some family friends for soup, the guts and rest of the body was cut up for compost to make fertilizer, and even the water from the fish cleaning shed goes right out to the plum tree so that any nutrients in the water aren't wasted. It is quite the operation.
  3. Well Wayne I didn't think I had to warn the guys about being turned off men.
  4. Well I think this is my first ever fishing report . My buddy picked me up 3 am Monday morning and we headed back home to Morrisburg where we both grew up. I tipped my hat and sent up a quick prayer as we drove through Port Hope. Monday was too windy for us to get out on the boat so we went out minnowing and fished for some pan fish during the afternoon. We didnt have too much luck for panfish and we were catching too many bass, so we packed it in for the day. Tuesday we were up at the crack of 10 and out on the water. We were targeting pike. The day started off slow, we tried a couple spots but had a couple follows but no takers. We switched from still fishing and started trolling. I was using a jointed rapala in perch pattern and it seemed to be the choice of the day. Most of the creek mouths produced a pike or two for us. At one point I was skunking my buddy in the pike dept. I had 4 to his 0. So he switched lures to the same one that I was using and I still caught fish and he didnt. So I offered to switch rods with him and he didnt take it too well. We finished off the day still fishing again in a creek mouth that we knew always holds fish and picked up a couple more on minnows under a bobber. We saw one big girl that had to be over 45" but she just swam by and ignored us. We hooked into some HUGE smallies too, but we were a month too early so they went back in. Wednesday we broke out the 20' bamboo poles and went out for mudpout. My boss at work was telling me she loves a good feed of mudpout now and then, so I told my buddy we should try and take a couple home for her. It started off slow but as we got into late afternoon the big ones started to move in and we got into a couple nice ones that I cleaned up for her. At one point one of our bobbers went right under and my buddy leaned back into the pole but it didnt budge, so he walked backwards and I went up to the shore to have a look at what he caught. It was a decent size snapper that was not about to let go of the fish we had hooked. I ran to get the camera but of course as I got back there the snapper let go It was good to have some time back home and put things in perspective. Here's some pics, sorry about my man boobs. Eventually I got smart and put a shirt on. Too little too late, I'm paying for that now. Here's my buddy fishing with the long bamboo
  5. Sorry to hear Lew. Very nice tribute, cherish the memories. You and your family will be in my prayers.
  6. Lord of the flies...I got called Piggy for a while after we read that in high school. <_<
  7. I have been trying to track down a buddy for a few years now, and I found him on myspace. I am trying to register and send him a msg but when I fill out the form and go to the next page, it asks me to fill in the security letter/number combo. The picture doesnt show. Doesnt matter how many times I refresh, I just see either a red x when I use IE or when I use firefox I get the little symbol with the shapes in it when it wont show a picture. I have tried right clicking and selecting show picture with both browsers and no luck. I tried to email myspace but when I bring up the contact us page it has 2 drop down boxes. The first one says pick your topic which I can do. But the second says pick your subtopic and regardless of the topic I pick there are never any suptopics to pick from, and it wont let me go any further without picking one. I have tried changing my firewall settings but that didnt work either. Any ideas?
  8. The islands are part of the harbour and would require a harbour license
  9. No prob, if things change let me know. We are due around the same time as your brother. As hard as the ladies have it while they are pregnant the guys suffer too. 9 months of being absolutely helpless and worrying about how mom is feeling with out being able to do much and not being too sure what is going on. All the best.
  10. Here's what I have found so far: “In the spring, the ostrich fern's distinctive ‘fiddleheads,’ the young, coiled fern leaves about an inch in diameter, are mostly green, but have brown scales. Nearly all ferns have fiddleheads, but the ostrich fern's are unlike any other. These fiddleheads have a paper-dry, parchment-like sheath that usually has started to peel. Most other fern fiddlehead sheaths are fuzzy or wooly.” The fact sheet contains this warning: The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has investigated a number of outbreaks of food-borne illness associated with fiddleheads. The implicated ferns were eaten either raw or lightly cooked (sautéed, parboiled or microwaved)…. Although a toxin has not been identified in the fiddleheads of the ostrich fern, the findings of this investigation suggest that you should cook fiddleheads thoroughly before eating (boil them for at least 10 minutes). Here's some sites I found. fiddleheads pictures more pics Just reading over those sites I found a link to harvesting leeks. As a kid my buddy and I used to go with his dad every spring. I never really knew what we were looking for I just picked what I was told. His dad used to pickle them. Anyone else pick leeks?
  11. How do you know which fiddleheads you can eat? I thought I read here last year that some can be carcinogenic? But my neighbour says he just eats whatever he picks?
  12. How far are you folks travelling to be at Mt Sinai? If you guys are travelling far and need a place to crash or just want a home cooked meal PM me, I'm not that far out of the city, we can arrange something.
  13. Thanks for the input guys, I'm hoping you guys are right and the old Johnson will fire right up. Smokey I havent had a chance to get out for Turkey yet, I'm hoping my next set of days of. Vance, thanks for the links I have saved them, I think they will come in real handy. Pikehunter, the hull looks pretty sound so far, the transom we have gone over very well and there are no soft spots. Havent been underneath yet. Caper, I may just have to take you up on that offer. Keram, I got the garage cleaned out just the week before, any earlier and the wife would have had it full of junk before the boat got here. A side note on that, I never told her the boat was coming till the day before. It really is easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission.
  14. My buddy and I have co-owned a boat for several years, and out of convenience we left it at his cottage. They had a better boat up there so ours was neglected. Well they sold the cottage so now our boat is in my drive and we will spend the summer cleaning it up. It's gonna need new carpet and seats and a good powerwashing. The trailer got new tires and lights for the trip down, but the trailer will have to be stripped and painted at the very least. Here's the before pics. I may be asking some questions along the way. The motor is the biggest concern, we took the cap off and it looks like no water got in there but there were a couple cobwebs.
  15. We were at a restaurant the other night and they had posted a note in the window that said "PLEASE DON'T POST THINGS ON THE WINDOW" I took a pic on my cell phone lol
  16. http://www.hilltopdogsupply.ca/Beagles.htm Doug is just outside of Lindsay and sells beagles as well as redbones. He also sells all the beagling supplies you would need. Great guy. I drive from Oshawa to Lindsay for every bag of dog food just so I can deal with him.
  17. I read this page 3rd. I will go sit in the timeout chair.
  18. On a side note, last sunday I was driving my kid to lacrosse and I saw (I'm guessing Mitch) a CO in his pickup right in downtown Oshawa on Celina St. Seemed to be pulling into a driveway. Thought it was a bit odd, but good to see them out and about.

  20. Where else but OFC can you get this much info on 45 Gal drums at this time of the morning. Thanks very much for the info fellas. And Bigchev thanks for calling your buddy.
  21. I am thinking about making myself a smoker out of barrels but I'm having a heck of a time finding drums. Anyone know of places in the GTA where I can get 45 Gal drums that have been used for food and not chemicals? All the ones I have found have had chemicals in them. I need to find 3 but could get away with 2. Here's a pic of something similar.
  22. Always good to hear about good customer service. Good for you.
  23. It's funny how kids stuff sticks in your head. My old man loves when our son is over because he gets to watch little bear!! I keep telling him its the circle of life.
