I went out this morning for a few hours. Was fortunate to harvest a decent Tom. Keep at it fellas, the challenge makes the reward of getting one even sweeter. The setup, just off a hay field / pasture Textbook, this fella came in gobbling and strutting, drummed a few times Reward 9" beard 3/4" spurs

If you have a deep lake nearby, try Ling. They are a blast to catch, fight like heck and this time of year they can be caught surprisingly shallow at night.

Most of us target multiple species, but we mostly each have one specie that is top on the list, a fish that we are both passionate and more "studied" on. Many of us love the Musky, some pike, some trout, some pan-fish, and a large percentage of us are bass fanatics. My preferred quarry is Lake Trout. Fish of many names, Grays, Togue, Gris Truite, Mackinaw... Namaycush, the Cree call them namekus. I've been chasing lakers for many years, starting as a kid out on ice with my father, and since then, both soft and hardwater. Smallmouth bass are a 2nd choice for me... in recent years, even on opening day for bass, I've found myself starting off the day popping a lake trout or two... then shifting to smallmouth as the waves pick up. If the smally bite sucks, I'm back to chasing lakers. Namaycush are my true passion, denizons of the cold and deep, a symbol of pure natural Canadian wilderness. Fast-forward to 2013... This hardwater season kicked off with a beauty 11lb fish Best of January 2013 I fully expected it would be the best laker I would see this year, but... On a recent back-woods laker hunt... I was proven wrong.The fishing was quite decent, with 4 average sized lakers caught, when an absolutely memorable "stop you dead in your tracks" hit was followed by the most memorable nail-biter battle I have experienced yet. This fish played every trick in the book...zooming upwards trying to slack the line, long drag-singing runs to the point where the spool was nearly empty, where I had no choice but to tighten the drag. Gaining line back on the spool...head shakes... and a few times, the laker just stopped and suspended steady. Couldn't lift it, drag would slip, all I could do was stay kneeled over the hole while keeping a bend in the rod for tension. Ziiippp!!! Back off the line goes again... all the while I was tweaking the drag to balance between being spooled vs the dreaded "ting" of a snapped line. After a 15 minute tug-of-war, the fight finally ended with fortune smiling on me, this fella airside to say... "Hello. I am the fish you see inside your eyelids when you sleep. " The gaping mouth completely filled the 8" hole, the fight was epic. Yes Namekus, you deserve to be returned, but I need one promise. "Come visit again old friend, don't be a stranger. February 2013 - Namekus - my old friend I`ll be reliving this one over and over... Cheers O4T

Enjoyed the Vid Jacques!! Good fishing for sure. I can relate to the hunt vs fishing dilemma, although I usually make it out for Sept-Oct smallmouth a few times. Once mid October arrives, hunting rules the free time. Then, ice fishing again!! Soon!!

September 2009, pre-season scouting for deer. We spotted a deer in a meadow, in tall grass, upwind from our position. My son and I crept along, every time the deer raised it's head, we would freeze. Eventually we positioned behind a tree clump and were able to walk closer. Finally, peering out from the trees, we were about 30 yds from a beautiful 8pt buck. We crept around the tree clump, and eventually were 15yds from the deer. The next time it raised it's head, it spotted us. We slowly sunk to our knees in the tall grass, and the buck snorted, then stomped it's front feet, and... headed straight toward us!! We slunk lower in the grass, and eventually it was about 5ft from us, still stomping, but standing still. We could count the whiskers around it's nose and hear it breathing. I was wondering what it's next move would be, and actually I was getting a bit worried that it might stomp us, so I stood up and yelled... HELLO!! It took off running, but only ran about 40 yds, then stood broadside to us, staring. Then 2010, also September, checking the trail camera, while on the ATV, I noticed a young button buck under an oak tree. The oak tree was about 4ft diameter. I stopped the ATV but left it running to mask any noise I might make, with the tree between the ATV and the buck. I got off the ATV and walked slowly to the tree. Didn't hear it run, so I knew it was on the other side of the trunk. I slowly positioned around the trunk and was 3 ft from the button buck eating acorns. Suddenly, it got curious, and started walking around the tree. I circled and positioned on the opposite side of the trunk. And there it came, oblivious to me, and walked literally 3 feet from me, all the while staring at the ATV. It's tail was straight in the air, it was slowly high stepping toward the ATV. As it's tail passed by me, I reached out in an attempt to grab a handful of bucktail hair, but I couldn't quite reach it. Finally it winded my and took off flagging. Both were awesome experiences. I doubt if either deer survived the hunt! We never saw either deer again.

Slipped out for some trout ahead of a rainfall, the overcast skies were perfect for the trout to be on the feed. Pulled up a few small lakers right away, then several Cisco. This particular one had been chewed on before... After trying a different spot on the lake, a solid hit stopped the lure. After a few good runs, this fella came in to say hello... Dropped the lure back down, and in 10 lifts had another good hit, and another chunk came up for air. Nearly a twin to the previous fish, but this one had a bit more girth. The slime was literally dripping off this fish. It had an interesting pattern in the spots, from the right ventral fin up to the dorsal fin. Good identifier if I catch it again someday. Always a good time chasing the Lakers... and a falling barometer makes it that much better!! O4T

Nice bird. Cedar waxwing, but could be a Bohemian waxwing... If you can see the wings, Cedar waxwings have red tips, Bohemians yellow.
