  1. I had a problem with my Merc 115 4 stroke EFI cutting out for no apparent reason and then suddenly coming back to life. It turned out a bad ground at the battery was the culprit. I had one of those battery quick disconnect units that you unscrew which I bought at the sportsman show installed. When I took it apart, it was all burnt between the plates. Never a problem since removing it but I was surprised the engine wouldn't run without the battery. I guess the new electronics are highly dependant on a good battery. I do wonder how it would run after boosting a dead battery as I wouldn't want to try and pull start this beast.
  2. Funny you mention that, I have the same problem with my MinKota but its a 12 volt. It seems to turn left slower than to the right? Any Ideas? Peter
  3. Fellow Fishermen / Fisherwomen, I've jumped in here a few times and actually find it very interesting to see and get to know the backgrounds and interests of everybody on this forum. I find myself visiting often especially on layovers abroad. When topics have swayed toward aviation for instance, I'm happy to jump in with absolutely no intent of offending anyone or undermining the primary existence of the forum. Hockey isn't my bag so I don't go there. Getting to know one another amidst this long winter is a wonderful way to pass the time as we collectively wait to get our boats in the water. I apologize if some threads go awry and off topic but let's all remember that everyone here loves to fish! Here's a picture of the North Pole on the way to the Orient. All I could think about is if anyone ever fished there: Cheers! Peter
  4. Safest place is in the cockpit where I am, then you know what's going on and besides that, my window opens and has it's own escape rope! That way, the first thing you'll see is my sorry butt running away if we evacuate. All kidding aside, Kirk's comments are probably accurate plus the ride is best over the wings. These plane are so long now that the front and back can sway a bit in turbulence. The quietest ride is toward the front. In the cockpit, you really don't hear the engines especially with our headsets on so you have to watch the dials to make sure everything is up to speed.
  5. Or this one, brand new to be delivered in 5 days, brakes let go while doing an engine run: WHOOPS!
  6. Okay boys, here's some more fun if you're bored: Air Portugal in Lisbon: http://ca.youtube.com:80/watch?v=Id4jeEfhBiE Korean Air in Hong Kong's old Kai Tak airport. Look closely how he actually touches down before the runway threshold and takes out a runway light or two: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=cub3n4QrCrs&...feature=related
  7. I think it's 23 but don't forget, the forecasts are in true and the runway is magnetic so could've been more that 60 degrees off?
  8. Hi Handyman, I see you're in Mount Hope. Generally we don't get that far departing from Toronto no matter what runway you depart from. We have to maintain runway headings until 3600' for noise reasons until Air Traffic Control points us the right way. The only way you may get a glimpse of the Hamilton area is if you take off toward the west (into wind) on a clear day and turn right (North) after takeoff and that usually occurs around Streetsville or Milton. The common route to Calgary after takeoff is generally north toward Midland then Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay or perhaps Diluth depending upon winds, then basically along the US - Canada border. Cheers, have a great trip! Peter
  9. This is the aviation weather forecast from Hamburg airport at the time of this incident: EDDH 011220Z 29028G48KT 9000 -SHRA FEW011 BKN014 07/05 Q0984 TEMPO 29035G55KT 4000 SHRA BKN008 In bold/underlined is the winds which decoded means the wind was forecast to be from 290 degrees at 28 knots gusting 48 knots and temporarly 290 degrees at 35 gusting 55 knots. 55 Knots = 63 MPH = 105 KPH The apparently took out a winglet as well - Whew, lucky
  10. You mean kinda like this: (Don't forget to hit the play button) http://jumpcut.com/view?id=C009AF72755211D..._id=&them=1
  11. That's just a normal landing for me, what's the problem? Mine are like that without any wind!
  12. Hi Smalliefisher, Did you get my PM about tackle shops in China? Peter
  13. Don't know RJ but I know a Peter Jay? That Norseman is a classic isn't it? If it's still airworthy, when are we going fishing! Peter
  14. Just as a side note, there has been a Malaria outbreak there for a number of years. Make sure you bring lots of mosquito repellent and check out these government websites if you're concerned: http://www.voyage.gc.ca/dest/report-en.asp?country=77000 http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/tmp-pmv/2008/mal_dr080206-eng.php Remember you'll have to check it in because of the liquid ban on carry on luggage. Many travellers from Canada don't realize that Malaria exists in the Dominican Republic and travel agents are reluctant to give you the heads up in fear of scaring away business. It's certainly good to know though. I don't know whether the anti-malaria medication is over kill or not. You have to take that two weeks in advance of your trip anyways so too late for that regardless. Your Doctor could advise you on that if you're concerned. The resorts are generally okay because they routinely spray but if you're going off property to go fishing for example, protect yourself for sure. I don't mean to rain on your parade but I thought you may like to know. It's a great place and you'll have a great time. Cheers, Peter
  15. Wow, small world irishfield, Reid and I were hired together in 1987. I think he came from Bearskin Airlines in Thunder Bay. Cory, that was the Chief Pilot that pulled that stunt. Cathay Pacific paid the poster of the original streaming video $40,000.00 to remove it! It's all about saving face I guess...
  16. Hi Young One, The 777 does all the Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai's directly from Toronto now as they have gotten rid of all the four engine Airbus A-340's. All we have left now are the twin engine Airbus A-330's mostly for Europe. This month, we're starting Tokyo again. The other routes we fly are Toronto-Frankfurt (1 of the the two dailys), Montreal-Paris, Vancouver-Sydney and the odd Toronto-London. Hope to see ya out there! Peter
  17. Ya, I know what you mean. Boeing says the fuselage of a Boeing 737 would fit inside the engine of the 777. Now that'a a lot of hot air!
  18. Hi Lew, Yes, It's a Boeing 777, Air Canada's latest addition to our fleet. It holds 342 passengers and we go about as long a haul as you can nowadays. A typical flight is 16 hours long over the north pole to Hong Kong. We carry double the compliment of pilots and have a crew rest facility with bunks upstairs. Now if I can find those tackles shops in China, I can bring you guys back stuff! Peter Here are a couple of pictures: Over Vancouver: Business Class Cabin: Uper Crew Rest Facility (That's not me, just a Boeing photo): And of course, my best fishing buddy on a flight to China with his Dad:
  19. Hello All, I regularly travel to Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Tokyo and since everything we get comes from there, I was wondering if by any chance anybody would know of any contacts or stores there that sell tackle etc. in those cities. I'm looking for a few Okuma Magda Pro line counter trolling reels right now. Any websites or addresses would be helpful. For example, I know you can get "knock off" golf clubs for a fraction of the price not to mention clothes, purses etc. Thanks, Peter
  20. Cliff, Yes it was Lunge Haven now that you mention it. I'd love to hook with you in the spring, we'll be in touch - Thanks! Peter
  21. Hi Big Cliff, I agree with you as far as learning the lake goes. I had my boat at Snug Harbour off of Country Road 36. There's a small marina at the end of the road with reasonable dockage but brutal on the weeds. I may just end up trailering it this year and exploring different areas. I'd love to hook up with you though! Peter
  22. Hi All, After several years of having my trailer up in Muskoka and fishing mostly Penn Lake, I moved last year to a campground off Sturgeon on Emily Creek. The dieing carp and out of control weeds on Sturgeon really made me miss the clear waters of Muskoka not to mention the Pike action. Being new to Sturgeon, I didn't have much luck and was very frustrated with the mud and weeds constantly tangling up my prop and plugging up my water intakes. I had to back flush the motor several times last year. I had my boat at a marina at the mouth of the Scugog river. Based on my experience, I would take Vernon over Sturgeon. I would like to fish somewhere else this season. Perhaps Balsam, Pigeon, any boat launches, marinas for my 19' Legend, any recommendations?
  23. Thanks Everybody! Great to be here, and although I have a great job, it still doesn't beat fishing! Hope to see you all out on a lake somewhere... Cheers, Peter
  24. Hi Folks, I thought I could shed some light as I'm a pilot for Canada's flag carrier and have flown Montreal - Toronto many times. When air traffic control (ATC) flows traffic into Toronto, they use four "bedposts" inbound. One from each direction and in this case (from the east) it's called the Simcoe arrival because it comes in just south of Lake Simcoe before it blends in with the landing pattern. In ths case, it appears you were being vectored around or actually in a hold right over Lake Scugog with left hand turns which gave you the great views. ATC does this as a delaying or "metering" tactic when things get backed up. Sinker is right on the mark and very impressive if I may add! This first picture is Moira Lake near Madoc which you would've passed over first. Then as Sinker said, #2 is Round Lake near Havelock, #3 the causeway at Bridgenorth on Chemong and so on. He had me on the causeway because at first glance, it looked to me like the one in Port Perry. I need a guy like him beside me when the passengers ask where we are! In our world, it's all waypoints and intersections in the sky and have little to do with geographic location. In this case, the pilot said you'll be flying over Lake Simcoe because they were doing the Simcoe Arrival, not because you were actually going to be over the lake itself. Most of our PA's to the passengers are general in nature as many wouldn't know where Lakes Scugog, Chemong, Moira etc. are. Cheers!
