  1. Lots of options out there. I'm building a 5'10" UL for shore fishing crappie right now. Couldn't find exactly what I needed off the shelf, this is a feather light and super fast little stick that is light enough to make the fight interesting.
  2. If you haven't been there is a while the water levels might surprise you. Most of the year, you couldn't paddle a canoe through much of that creek.
  3. I'm sure it will get posted here - always does. Hope to make it myself this year
  4. Are you talking about turning it into an ice rod? If not, you will have all sorts of trouble casting without replacing a couple guides with larger ones near the reel.
  5. No matter what the rod companies tell you about "lighter", "more sensitive", or anything else it all comes down to $$$. High quality cork is hard to find and CRAZY expensive right now. The solution for factory rods is to use the lowest grade cork they can find, and jam it with as much filler as possible. Then minimize the total amount they use, and trick us with fancy marketing speak.
  6. It's rare that I find a fishing show worth watching. Sometimes I tune in if they are fishing a lake I know, or would like to learn
  7. Can't be worth it...you are going to spend more just in gas?
  8. Awesome Mike! We've been doing really well all over Ontario too, but there is something about that water that I like. Never fished it under winter conditions though!
  9. No kidding. Unfortunately I'm out that way in the spring most of the time, and for midweek trips it just makes sense. In the fall on the other hand... You're lucky to have the water you do close by
  10. Slip float, small jig tipped with a minnow on my ultralite set-up.
  11. What makes me laugh is that some people will risk heavy fines and possible loss of equipment to fish literally 5 feet further upstream than the next guy. I just don't get it.
  12. Fishing in a sanctuary. At Port Hope you can't fish "North of the Southern limit" of the CNR right of way. They were likely under the bridge fishing the pipe which people have been doing forever even though it is clearly written in the regs.
  13. Side note - always check the regs before heading out if you're unsure. People here are knowledgeable but if they get it wrong you will have a hard time arguing that "BigBass328 from OFC" said it was open officer, I swear.
  14. Don't fall in. That water is ice cold and can get real choppy with the right winds. Look for weeds if you can find any, there is a ton of pike out there.
  15. Bill, honestly take a drive to the Ganny the first week in September at night. It's absolutely disgusting. Literally PILES of dead carcasses in the morning.
  16. Unfortunately, anglers aren't the only people that are after the illegally acquired roe.
  17. A ban on roe stops the law-abiding steelheaders from stripping one or two chinnys for roe. It does NOTHING to stop the groups that come in at night and strip 50-75 fish at a time. These people are criminals, not anglers.
  18. Yeah, I've seen it happen at Bronte too. A couple dummies filling bags with roe...the CO was waiting for them at the bank when they waded out.
  19. At the risk of a serious sidetrack (my apologies) there are thousands of the little buggers in the 4"-8" range up in the headwaters... Do we know where the snag is? Are they not leaving like they should or simply not coming back? Dying in the lake? Cormorant food? I wonder if our rivers are anywhere near healthy enough to sustain a spawning population of Atlantics...I'm all for restoring the fishery, but I don't believe dumping a million fish a year into a few rivers is going to do it.
  20. Thanks Lew. I always stop - but only offer assistance where I can. I have ZERO medical training, and have no place helping a trauma victim. In the past I've called 911 (first on the scene), helped an elderly woman who as uninjured to my warm car (middle of January), and helped to direct traffic through an intersection. Unfortunately stopping to help has landed me in court twice as a witness. Both times I was the only one involved in the case that actually showed up. Talk about a waste of your day.
  21. Seriously, we're counting Atlantics on Duffs now? I'll save them the $250K - I just counted....oh look, its none.
  22. It would be absolutely hysterical to see a CO try to decipher between hatchery and wild roe. A roe ban wouldn't bother me, personally. It also wouldn't do anything to stop the slaughter. It's not the law-abiding anglers that come in at night and slit 50-100 fish (males and females).
  23. Had it happen to a couple crappies one time. Thought it was very strange...
  24. Hey buddy, does that fish come in mens? Seriously though, Josh is a real-life giant. Those fish are twice the size they appear. Welcome aboard.
  25. In my opinion you will not find a better rum then Ron Zacapa Centenario 23. Distilled in the mountains of Guatemala, and has a very distinct taste. Incredibly smooth - served with a few drops of cola or straight up on the rocks. Can be difficult to find, but absolutely worth it (and every dollar you will have to pay). **Edit - I should add that the only reason I can afford to drink this stuff is because my girlfriend's grandmother actually lives in the Zacapa region of Guatemala, so I encourage them to smuggle as much as they can carry back every time they visit. It will run you about $100/bottle here (if you can find it). Costs ~$30 USD in Guatemala.
