  1. I phoned chris's Baits who were open and helpful but were not very positive about the ice conditions. I suppose if I had a floater suit and a buddy with a rope, and a http://www.thewilcraft.com/the_vehicle.php , I might venture out there. Alas, I have none of those. Thanks for the replys
  2. Can anybody wiegh in on the ice conditions at Crowe lake now? It's probably a sloppy mess but I thought I'd ask here before I went to see for my self. thanks! James
  3. I phoned the soo MNR a few weeks ago and they emailed me the master list. PM me your email and I'll forward it over to you if you like.
  4. This one might be what you want? http://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/modis/mod...on=o&page=1 Whoops! Danimal beat me to it!
  5. I listened to Sirius all the way through the rockies from Jasper to the south of Banff and found the reception was excellent the whole way. Maybe this is because of a more southerly latitude?
  6. If I was on E-bay I might bid. Can anybody vouche for this particular brand or model? EBAY Ice Hut Link Link
  7. I am something of noob on this board but I look forward too and read it daily. I wrote a response for the Congratulations Obama thread and it was Locked so I will post it here. I think that the Mods should be less concerned about locking contentious topics and maybe just label them as such. Who are you to restrict free speech and discussion in a forum such as this (even if it is privately operated?) I think that Obama deserves a giant congratulations. Regardless of race, he IS the next president. Any body who becomes president deserves a pat on the back. The fact that he is the first Black president only gives him another paragraph in a text book. To say that he has to worry about being attacked or assassinated more than bush (for example) is ludicrous. Have you seen Bush's security detail? They all have to worry. I am excited to see what Obama will bring to the table. As quoted on the other thread previously "After everything is said and done just remember that he is still a politician. " thanks, James
  8. My favourite tab page was http://guitartabs.cc/ I learned how to play on guitartabs and always found it had a great directory and easy to use search function. It also came complete with a massive forum full of experts and so called experts who were all willing to lend some advice to a huge guitar noob. Unfortunatly "The Man" decided that sharing lyrics and tabs was illigal due to copyright infringement and guitar tabs was forced to shut down or risk being sued. I just checked in and apparently it is back up and running again though not at 100%. Any way check out gutartabs.cc. plug!
  9. hey guys, I am headed to earl rowe PP. near Alliston Ontario today. I grew up near by but never fished there. can any one tell me what species there are to target and how to target them? Are you willing to share any special hot spots? Thanks, James
  10. One of the things I like about this board is the fact that all the information I want to read is thown at me all at once and then I get to choose which I will read. The down side is that information quickly gets washed away under a flood of new posts. I therefor am in favour of creating more sections. However, I dont think that a millionn different sections is efficeint either because then the user has to click a million times just to read what they would have in 1 click. Perhaps dividing the information by species or region would be benificial. It seperates it a little but not too much.
  11. Noooo! ohhh... No!!!! awww man. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I didnt look close enough at the regs I guess. bwaaaa. I guess I have to drive it to zone 15 in which case I may as well get into some lakers , splakers or brookies. I`m still curious about the habits of the sucker fish though if any one still wants to chime in with some amazing information! Thanks again, James
  12. Hello everybody, I am currently living in ZONE 17 southeast of Peterborough. There are lots of creeks running all over the place and I'd like to do some fishing. I am told that there are Speckled Trout in some but they are out of season for another couple weeks and by that time I wont be here any more. There is a creek behind my house that I am told has runs of great big carp, though at first glace I dont see any fish in there at all. I know in the summer I've never seen carp in there nor any large fish, just small minnow types. So my questions are: What time of year is best to target suckers or carp as the case may be? What is the best bait, presentation and method to fish them? What characteristics define the type of stream suckers would run up or could be found in? Thanks for any suggestions! - James
  13. As said previously a stuck nut can be removed by heating it with a torch. this will cause the metals to expand and break the "seal" so-to-speak, then you twist it off normally. If that doesnt work or you dont have a torch tapping it with a hammer can help to un stuck it. Also if you get a piece of pipe and slide it onto the end of your wrench you can gain more leverage which should halp to twist it off too. Oiling it for a few days can help too. if all else fails then it's time for the grinder!
  14. well done CC, I've fished the muddy many-a-time and like you said, I'm one of the guys that just seems to wet a line! Well done in the muddy water!!
  15. I happen to really enjoy reading about how other guys catch way more fish than me and have more secret spots than me. That's why I come here. Pictures are just a bonus!
  16. I was sitting on the edge of my seat and I didn't know what was going to happen! Thanks for posting.
  17. I happen to think rainbow trout taste fantastic. I've never had rockbass before so I can't comment on those but sucker tastes ok too.
  18. Does anybody recomend the Mepps Black Furry #1 or 2 or something similar tipped with a half worm? perhaps some of those power bait trout attractant little rubber ball things. Also I have had luck with a little thing called a "wedding band". basically this invloves about 4 or 5 green, blue, orange or red beadswith a single bait holder hook at the one end and a silver spoon at the other. the actual "weddingband" model has some shiney fake diamond in the middle of the beads. Again i'd tip with with worms or power bait. This worked really well for rainbows and suckers up some mountain creeks in B.C. I have no experience going for specs but I've caught rainbows and browns in rivers with the above mentioned set-ups.
  19. I do most of my fishing either on the ice in the winter, up river banks in the spring and fall, or in a canoe during the summer. In the winter I'll usually hit them over the head with something heavy or give'm the ol' 1-2 boot stomp to the face. Either that or in the -20 to -30 C temperatures they freeze to death almost instantly any way. In the spring and fall I usually use a trusty rock to do the job caveman style. In the summer though if I am out on the lake and the temperatures are high, I will use a stringer. I need to keep the fish alive lest it heat up and spoil. When I am canoe-fishing I am usually somewhere where bringing ice is not an option. - James
  20. My ethics may differ from yours. Ethics are based on a persons background, their personal beliefs, how they were raised, their knowledge of the given issue, etc. The laws and limits are in place for people who don't have that bleeding heart, feel sorry for the fish, or looking into the future conservatism attitude. The laws and limits are there to stop people from catching and keeping 25 fish like the good old days. I can understand your point about not keeping the limit every time, especially on a pressured lake. If I chose to keep my legal limit and have a meal or 2 thats my ethic and my decision, not something you necessarily need to worry about... though if you want to thats your choice. People you should be concerned with are those who ignore the catch and possesion limits or slot size limits (also known as poachers). That said, I don't always keep my limit but if I do it's not a good idea to come to me on the dock and tell me off for doing so.... unless you want to go swimming.
  21. While trapping minnows I caught 1 rock bass and 2 sun fish, all about 1 inch long. I put them in a fish bowl with an aerator and watched them jump out a coupe times. so I place a lid on it and I could hear them clang against it trying to jump to freedom. I let them go the next day feeling bad for them and dont plan to keep any more as pets... except maybe a large school of bait fish. On a larger scale it is my dream to buy some land excavate a pond and stock it with X species. Then we'll really have some pets to play with.
  22. One option if you are having trouble finding your lake because the search engine doesnt recognize the format is to change the format of the coordinate. To convert lat and long from degrees, minutes and seconds go to this link here : http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/DDDMMSS-decimal.html here I pluged in (44º 59' N., 78º 10' W.) and it converted it into decimal degrees: 44.983333n 78.166667w Off to google maps ( maps.google.com) where I searched my newly converted coordinates and the following result was returned... HERE! As-to accuracy, google is very accurate though I can't quote exact numbers. I have searched alot of the small stocked lakes in the regs manual and am often dismayed at the coordinate that google gives me. The error isn't on the google end but on the MNR end. If the latitude and longitude do not give accuracy down to the second then there is a large window for error left open. There are approx. 111 km per degree of latitude, approx 1.8 km per minute and 30 meters per second. Longitude is variable depending on what latitude it is being measured at. So I basically spewed all that technical jargon to say that if the coordinate is off a couple of minutes, or rounded up or down the coordinate may not be all that useful. Especially when looking for a lake in the middle of 100 other lakes.
  23. If you are asking about a hydrographic map, that is a depth chart, you can get one in either the "Fishing kawarthas" map book or the "Fishing Eastern Ontario" map book. I can't remember which but I have both. Maybe it is in both? These are sold at many stores in the region including canadian tire and chapters probably. eastern ontario and/ or kawarthas are the one('s) you want. I cant remember, sorry! http://www.backroadmapbooks.com/index.php?...products_id=224
  24. I guess my main concern in posting this was the following excerpt: How can they even discuss a complete closure of winter fishing over an entire region? Any government that is in office when a regulation such as that gets passed should be tarred, feathered, and given a good swift kick..... That is unless the fishery is nearly dead. I can understand creating fishing sanctuaries on bodies of water which are stresed or at risk, but over a whole region?
  25. Here is an article about the current bait size controversy as well as some scarey restriction proposals for 2010. If you live in zone 18, it may be time to move. http://www.ottawasun.com/News/OttawaAndReg...803185-sun.html
