  1. I didn't evolve through generations of successful hunters to be at the top of the food chain and then deny my lineage by eating tofu............
  2. What can I say? The Pennsylvanians who used deer whistles were of the opinion that they worked. And there are a LOT of deer in PA!!! I have not personally tried them, but thought it would be worthwhile to mention them. Other than "Fisherman" who claims they attracted the deer, (and that moth balls are toys for field mice! ), the worst people can say is that they did not work for them.
  3. It is worth reminding folks that most of us who have responded live in Ontario, but the OP apparently lives in la belle province. Having lived there four years myself, I can attest with confidence that the laws in many ways are different............. Doug
  4. I should have mentioned, when I am driving in early morning/late evening in the fall, I expect to see deer. When I drive through areas where there are trees close to the road, I slow down and keep an eye out for deer in the ditch. That has saved me quite a number of times from hitting deer. Doug
  5. Back to Roy, thanks very much. I can use a "quote" button on every other website I visit, so I will look again through the preferences and settings here to see if I can find a reason for this. SORRY for the multiple hijacks............... Doug
  6. Thanks for the report! Even though Quinte is basically in my back yard, I have not been down there for a few years. I was really spoiled by the glory days of the mid-80s when good numbers of big fish were iced with regularity. A lot of the anglers KEPT their fish, even the big ones, and it would take a hog about twelve pounds or so for people to really take notice. I never did take one that big down there, my best was a winter walleye 10.5 pounds which is on the wall in my "man cave." (And then the next spring I caught one that was 12 pounds, up in the Key River. That fish is on the wall of the fishing lodge where I was staying at the time.) Based on your report, I guess I am overdue to get my fat butt back down to the Bay! Doug
  7. In ONTARIO, you must report the vehicle/deer collision to the MNR, who will take your name and the location of the accident. If you want to keep the road-killed deer, they will also give you the authority to do that. If your vehicle sustains more than "X" dollars worth of damage, it is my understanding that you must also report it to the police force having jurisdiction where the collision occurred. (THAT one I am not 100% about.) It appears that you live in Quebec, I suggest you contact your local office of the Ministere des Ressources Naturelles et de la Faune. (I may not have spelled all those words correctly) And you might consider the purchase of a "deer whistle" for your vehicle(s). I know a bunch of folks in Pennsylvania who use them and claim they are quite effective in alerting deer to your vehicle and they get out of the way. That would not help in a situation where a deer is being chased by coyotes or whatever, of course. HTH. Doug
  8. back to Old Ironmaker................ I suspected that might be the case, thanks. Glad you like my avatar, that picture was taken in Cold Lake Alberta a couple years back when I fished and hunted my way from Kingston Ontario to the Yukon and back. Now of the three names people have suggested, the only one I recognize is Grizzly Adams, and that is the one I get most often when I meet people. Some folks talk about a show called Duck Dynasty where the fellows apparently have appropriate facial hair, maybe that is where one would find the Don King or the Phil somebody that Mike Borger mentioned? I don't watch TV at all..... But I have had a trim since that picture was taken.... And if I keep posting replies to interesting threads I guess my post count will eventually hit the threshold required for the ability to use more features here. GOOD website, I am enjoying the TONE here, very civilized. Doug
  9. As I stated elsewhere, that is an awesome video. I did recognize small parts of it. Yeah, I did find the music not to have been something I might have picked myself. And yep, in '95 I wasn't 30, I was forty............so officially an old fart now I reckon. Maybe next sound track could feature Uriah Heep............. Doug
  10. Back to Fisherman, yes the QUOTE button "SHOULD" work, but it doesn't for me, and I cannot copy and paste in a reply box either. Maybe it is another thing I am not allowed to do because I am a newbie.............. Doug
  11. :huh:Well, I do not know WHY I cannot make this reply add a quote................... Anyways, back to Fisherman, yes please. I am way overdue to hit Simcoe again, it has been years! And heck I could pay your young lad to GUIDE for us! Doug
  12. Awesome video there Moosebunk! And now back to our regular programming.............if my buddy down in Angus keeps me up to speed on this for 2015, I hope to make it to that derby. AND to bid on some of those awesome auction prizes! (Old saying, I was a day late and a dollar short.........) Doug
  13. COOL> Please tell him he looks great in a beard................
  14. PS) I had a trim since that picture was taken.............
  15. I am ABSOLUTELY THRILLED to see so many fellows with facial hair! YES I just started out here, but you are my kind of people! Doug
  16. My mother-in-law is originally from Newfoundland and she did not "SUGGEST" I make an igloo, but I did have to learn a couple dozen Newfie songs, have eaten fish and brewis, and actually know more verses to more Newfie songs than most Newfies. That was a heck of a lot easier than making a multi-coloured igloo! Doug
  17. At least he didn't knock it off with a net, or let it slip when he was tailing it for him..............
  18. THANKS! Do you keep the maggots lively by storing them in your mouth, like the old timers? Doug
  19. Jay used to tied flies for Hans Fuhrman, who owned a little tackle shop in Thornbury. I met Jay there one time he was in replenishing the stocks. He must have tied a gazillion flies..................and I still have a bunch in my old (neglected) steelhead vest. Doug
  20. Subscription is free with membership in the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH). OFAH (of which I have been a life member since they first offered lifetime membership) is our voice with the government on a host of important issues. I know that some folks have issues with the federation for a number of reasons, but surely it is the old adage, "united we stand, divided we fall." And amongst the many benefits of membership is a "FREE" subscription to Ontario Out of Doors........... JMOYMV Doug
  21. Great article! And it brought back a PILE of good memories. I think it was around 1984 or so that I met a guy who was whaling the steelhead at Thornbury when nobody else was catching a fish. I eventually asked him what he was using and he showed me these bitty little flies. Well, they were Michigan wigglers, tied by a guy called Jay Passmore if I recall correctly, and they were dynamite! Same river, or maybe the Bighead, I took a mid-morning break for breakfast and a coffee and met local steelhead master Rick Simms (I think that is how he spelled his name.) Rick had caught a bunch of fresh run steelies that morning, when I know most of us had not connected with many fish. I asked him what he was using. "BUGS" he said. Like Michigan wigglers, I asked? Nope, BUGS! And he showed me a bunch of insects he had gathered up from the river bottom. He was fishing them singly on a #16 hook IIRC. I never did catch my own bait critters, but that image came back when I read that portion of the article. So THANKS MIKE for some great memories! Doug
  22. Any details for us? Using a flasher? Over weeds? Bait? etc. Or if it's all information you want to keep to yourself I'll mind my own business. I have caught many hundreds of crappies and never saw one that big I don't think. Beauty! Doug
