  1. One of the old fishing show guys did a whole show on that lure last year on WFN. I can't remember how he was retrieving it but it got my attention enuf that I bought one the next time I was in the States. When I got it home I realized it was too light to cast well so I stuck it in my fly box to try with the fly rod when I get it out. JF
  2. What? You don't think iot would be cool to drop your moose with a 50 caliber sniper gun from a mile away?? JF
  3. A couple of years back I picked up a pair of compact glasses. What's nice about them is that there's some kind of lens phase coating that somehow enhances the ambient light. When you look at a darkish target it looks as if there's a light source being directed at it. Pretty cool. They're 8 power Pentax weather resistant DCF MCII. I think they may be a discontinued line. They were on sale for $100 down from $300. JF
  4. Perhaps they were admitting that Simcoe perch are much bigger than rice perch? It would appear to be consistent with the rest of their approach to business promotion - tell the potential guests you can offer much smaller fish. Yup, that's what I look for in a fishing holiday. JF
  5. How many heads on 'em? JF
  6. I suspect that's why he suggested sealing up only one end. JF
  7. She'd loaded it with 80# PP. JF
  8. My buddy Rob (the artist) has been fishing his whole life and until I corrupted him recently never used anything but junk reels, cheesy rods and 4# mono. The day after I left our campsite up at Joe's Lake (west of Ottawa) he called me all excited because he'd landed a 34" Northern on one of my cheap rods that I'd given him. This thing was so whippy it was like a berry cane. I bought it at Gander Mtn in a $6 sale bin. He had a miniature Skaespear spinning reel with 4# mono on it and was just casting off the rock for some sunfish for dinner. The pike was unexpected but he's been playing big bass with his lousy rods for so long he just took his time and landed it. He ate it instead of sunfish and it lasted for a few meals. So it can be done if you just go slow. Ironically he later broke the rod landing a smallmouth. JF
  9. Great minds etc. Except I hadn't thought of the rice. I was still trying to think of something that would absorb the water. Rice is good. JF
  10. Well, I'll believe it when I see it, which btw, hopefully will be shortly after 2r's gets back to the frozen north and figgers out where the crappy are hiding. Mebbe I can con him outa some of that and I'll try it out on little bitty lightweight fishies. I still remember when he was introducing me to joys of frogging and I launched a poor greedy little rock bass about 40' thru the air on a muskie sized hookset. I hadn't learned the part yet about wait a second before you set the hook when frogging slop. Poor little guy was so small the frog's feet were sticking outa his butt. The rock bass was just kinda hanging there looking up at me in shock like "what the hell just happened there?" JF
  11. Lighten up guys. We put up with buckets of ranting from all kinds of members with lots less to offer than Garry. Frankly I'd rather read Garry's posts than most of theirs. If we're going to insult members let's concentrate on the ones who contribute nothing but griping. End of rant. JF
  12. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will step up but in the meantime here's my experience. I bought a new BBQ a couple of years ago. It was set up for propane but came with a gas conversion kit. It was easy to switch. If memory serves it involved changing the fuel orifices and the regulator. I suspect the real question is whether or not the proper orifices are available for your unit. JF
  13. I've been kinda waiting for you to qualify the type of fishing you do. "Everything" in Ontario includes everything from rock bass to sturgeon and muskies. I'd be perfectly happy fishing for rock bass with one of my first $19.95 UL cheapie combos but even a little sturgeon would wet hisself laffing at me. I just started back into fishing a couple of years ago and started with $19.95 Quantum CTC combos. They were fine for small stuff but once you got into a decent smallmouth most of the reels forgot they had drag. Then the willowy fun rods start to snap etc etc. I experimented myself thru the cheapy phase and finally got comfortable with reasonably priced rods with some backbone and a little bit of feel for about $50. I've also found a few more than adequate reels for less than $50 but actually am happier with those at around $100. They're smoother in the cranking and drag department. Then there's the question of whether you fish mostly from a boat, from shore or wading. If you're doing a lot of boatfishing you'll probably wanna go with the trends and get a longer rod (7'+). I love casting from 2R's bassboat so I now have a variety of 7 footers. If you're a wader and have to do some bushbeating to get to the water you might prefer a 5 1/2' rod for the walk to the creek and then for casting while under lowhanging trees. My fave for that is my little 5'3 Quantum with a Quantum Catalyst spinning reel, about $150 all in. I had a nicer rig, a better 5 1/2' Quantum with a small Quantum Energy reel but lost it in the fall. One last thing. If you do much bushbeating and travelling you may want 2 pc instead of one piece rods. Just when you nicely settle on a spinning combo you start reading about all these OFC yahoos using baitcasters and trigger rods, so of course you have to investigate. Next thing you know you have 2 or 3 BC combos on the go. Lotsa questions to address and as a confirmed gearpig I have no idea how any fisherman can be satisfied with only one rod/reel combo. JF
  14. I don't know much about this but I've heard of folks renting satellite phones. I checked one link in Google and the first thing I saw was $19.95 for voice and sms. The sms service was 59 cents ofr an outgoing sms. Unless there's some tricks that might be a decent temp solution. JF
  15. Jeez! Technology is relentless. I'm the kind who would want to insert the smaller line far enuf up inside the hollow that I could tie a safety knot in the whole mess. JF
  16. That's why woodsmoke was invented - to cover the smell of beer & beans. JF
  17. Just watched a windup of today's curling. I'm not a bad rock thrower and I'm sure I couldn't throw even close to what they do in my shoes outa the hack let alone in a chair with a stick and no brushers. They also had the biathlon stuff on. That whole skiing sitting on one ski idea blows me away. As for the sledge hockey, these gotta have some serious upper body development going on, and they get pretty wicked heat with those little bitty sticks. Like I said, this stuff is fun to watch. JF
  18. Musta been really traumatic. It's even got you repeating yerself. JF
  19. I use it when fishing for creek smallmouths with AC Shiners. JF
  20. As long as you don't lose control and beg to sign hers. JF
  21. Somehow I thought being the boss would work like that for me. The mistake I made was asking my wife to help us out with the new business startup. Guess I'm not the boss after all. At least when I get out of town on my other job I can pretend. JF
  22. By meat do you mean animal parts??? JF
  23. Getting up this morning felt wrong. JF
  24. I'd be happy to give y'all an account of my experience making weenies at the packing plant when I was a kid. Made bologna and sausage too. JF
  25. Hmmm. Running sounds like too much work. I like my program better. Watched the Brier. Sorted all my plastics & hooks into plastic trays (gonna try a new system this year - one tray for worms, one for tubes and one for froggies & mice). Watched some truck racing. Cooked dinner and ate. Watched more curling. Slept. Got income tax stuff sorted out. Watched Grand Prix from Bahrain. Cooked and ate supper. Watched curling. Slept. Probably be more fun with wine but I've kinda lost my taste for it lately. Dunno what that's about. JF
