  1. There's absolutely nothing wrong with questioning our laws and those who enforce them. I find it quite laughable that you think falling in line and 'taking the medicine' is commendable. Especially, considering the fact that many of your fellow anglers on this board feel that the "Big Bad CO" nailed this guy on a technicality that stretches beyond the spirit of the law. ha! Tell that to Tommy Douglas, David Suzuki, or any other Canadian that ever made a difference.
  2. What a load of crap. The guy was trying to abide by the law and he got a $180 ticket! You do realize that this CO did more harm than he did good in this situation, right? This Bull ticket over 1/4" has broken the trust of at least one honest angler, and smeared the reputation of CO's all across Ontario. Talk about throwing the baby out with the bath water.
  3. A friend of the family has a cottage on Baptiste right down by "the village". I was up there for the first time for a week in June and I thought the fishing was kind of brutal. I mean, I guess it was okay in the evening, but really really tough during the day. I caught about 10 pike, 0 muskie and a about a half dozen walleyes and smallmouth for the week. I'm not sure how busy it is this time of the year, but when I was up there, every night around 6-7pm about a dozen boats seemed to come out of nowhere and they'd all be hanging around on the NE side of Blueberry island (here's a map for reference). That's where we caught the majority of our pike. The word on the water was that the Ripples is the place to go to catch walleyes, but I only fished there once and didn't have any luck. Hopefully, you'll have better luck than I did.
  4. LOL. The CO is obviously a dick for giving your friend a ticket for being 1/4" over, and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to take a long hard look at themselves.
  5. I haven't used this exact type of powerbait, but I've found success with nearly all of the powerbaits I've used and I use them quite a lot over the years. Personally, I like the Berkley Gulp baits better because they're more like live bait and the fish can actually eat them. If I were trying to catch pan fish I'd use the 6" pumpkinseed nightcrawlers and cut them into thirds. Also, sometimes I'll save the baits if I've only used them for a couple of hours, but I never put them back in the bag/jar with the new ones. Even though I don't think panfish are particularly sensitive to smell, I just don't like the idea of possibly contaminating the new baits.
  6. That's a beauty carp! For the kids I usually grab a bag of Berkley Gulps. I find they catch just as much as worms do, but they're more durable, so your not hooking a worm every 2 minutes.
  7. I was curious about this so I had a look on wikipedia. Here's what I found on galvanic corrosion: It sounds to me like you shouldn't have a problem.
  8. Well, the place that I went to last year, and that I'm returning to next week, is a couple hours further then a 6 hour drive from St. Catherines, but I'll share it anyway because the fishing is amazing and the rates are great. It's a fly-in outpost thru Lakeland Airways. They have 4 lakes you can fly into but I've only been to Aston Lake. It's a fairly small lake but your cabin is the only one on it. I actually like that the lake isn't huge because you get to know things the lake quickly. Anyways, the rates are great. Only $550 per person for a week. The cabin is by no means luxury but it does the trick. If you're interested in seeing some pics let me know and I'll post some up.
  9. Looks good. I think you should keep the pics/updates coming as it's always handy seeing what other people are doing with their boats.
  10. Thanks for the great input everyone. I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised that a lot of you guys are as fond of the x-rap type lures as I am. Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely try this setup and get some bucktails. We didn't have a single bucktail in the boat last year, but I've heard that they're essential. I'm pretty sure I know the exact spot that you're referring to in the NW corner. Funnily, we didn't really fish back there much at all, but I'll definitely give it some more attention this time around. As for the big hump in the middle (I assume you mean the area just south of the two islands), we called that the honey hole. At several points we found ourselves just sitting over top of that area jigging, bringing in an eye with every cast. We were catching them so easily that it almost felt like we were cheating. As for big walleye, we only saw one hog for the group which was 26" and fat. The average eyes we caught we caught were 17"- 19" and skinny. All in all, for the week, three of us caught about 160 fish combined, but I'm sure we could've doubled that number if we just sat on top of the honey hole all day.
  11. Doh! Been there with the whole lure thing. I got it right through the webbing between my thumb and index finger and I thought that was painful. I'm cringing just thinking about pulling out a little meat on the end of the barb as I'm sure you did. **shudders** Good job on the fish though!
  12. Thanks for the info MJL. I'm definitely going to give carp fishing a serious go. Last year I went out and got some Berkley carp bait, put it on the hook and threw my line in with no luck. Surprise, surprise lol
  13. Thanks for the tip Mike. This Yozuri hydro minnow looks awesome and is exactly the kind of thing I think I need (especially for getting down deep, the weight rig seems really simple). Unfortunately, I won't be able to get that lure in time. Do you have any suggestions for a alternative? **curses myself for not knowing about yozuri minnows**
  14. HA! great report! I'm learning so much. I just did some searching and found out what the spods were for, and now I'm wondering what the slingshot and syringes do? I'd love it if you or someone else wouldn't mind explaining carp fishing a little as I've never caught one before, but I'd like to try.
  15. LOL you guys are hilarious. Thanks coach! I already have a bunch of stuff similar to the slopmaster tandem, but regarding the shad x-rap is this the kind of thing you're referring to? I don't quite know the terminology, but I thought "shads" were the fat lures? Do you think I should be looking for a big fat lure that goes 25'?
  16. Hey people, I was just wondering if you any of you have any tips for pike fishing in late August up north (Temagami area). The reason I ask is because my annual one week fly-in fishing trip is coming up and I want to make the most it. Here's some info about the lake we'll be fishing: Ashton Lake (small private lake where we'll be the only group fishing so tips are far and few hehe) Length: about 2 miles max. Depth: the deepest parts of the lake averages 30-40ft and the deepest part is 60ft. Species: pike, walleye, small and largemouth bass etc.. Structure: lots of structure and islands but no too many weeds Last year we marked a lot of walleye (same time of year) at around 30ft-40ft, but sitting in the same spot, jigging those guys wasn't really that exciting. I mean, catching them was almost too easy, so most of the week we just trolled around the lake catching whatever walleye and pike bit the line. Also, none of the bigger walleyes we caught were deeper than 20ft as strange as that may sound. This year, I think I'm going to focus on catching pike. Last year I caught about 15 for the week, with an average size being around 26-30" and the largest being 40". I'd like to increase these numbers and catch around 4 pike per day and hopefully hook in to one of the 50" monsters that are in the lake. Anyways, I'm thinking that the big pike just might be in the deeper/colder water, hiding out to grab the walleye so I'm considering using a 3 way swivel rig to get down deep and cover a lot of area. By no means am I a fishing pro and I'm really just guessing with the lures I use so I'd really appreciate any info for catching pike at this time of year. O, by the way, we had absolutely no luck with 5 of diamonds or red devils last year. The thing that gave us the most luck was big 9" perch rapalas. I'm going to get a couple more of those this year, and I'm thinking that maybe something even bigger would work. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
  17. Great stuff! I really like how the lead vocals are so crisp and clear. The mixing and video and are pretty damn good too. The only minor criticism I have is that I'd like some more bass, but great job all round.
  18. I don't hunt, but I'll put my two cents in anyways, as I think this is a very interesting question. The idea of what is a "trophy" fish or "trophy" moose will always be relative to what's out there in the wild. This same line of logic can be applied to genetics. The "prime" genes for a moose, deer, or any other big game is relative. I mean, if all the hunters are going after the big moose, wouldn't it be beneficial to be a small moose? I guess my point is that we can't really predetermine what the "prime" genes are, because the "prime" genes one day just might not be the same today, as they would be 100 years from now. That's the beauty of evolution.
  19. Wow! What a beauty. Thanks for sharing.
  20. Wow, what a great read. Thanks for sharing your wonderful trip.
  21. Yeah that really stinks. Sorry to hear about your friend.
  22. Firstly, thank you for voting to keep this thread open. I really do believe that this is an important issue we all should discuss. I don't believe I'm contradicting myself. My ideas of what's idiotic isn't law, nor do I think it should be. "Idiocy" in itself is subjective and mostly a moral judgment. With that said, I'm about to get really unpopular and tell you that I don't entirely agree with the drinking and driving laws as they are. Organizations like MADD would like you to believe that drinking and driving is the big killer in Canada, killing tens of thousands of people, however, the facts are that drinking and driving deaths are only about 1,000 people per year nationwide (click this link to see for yourself), which is also pretty close to the 1/50,000 boater deaths given the total driving population. Personally, I don't believe the laws we have accurately represent the risk, and preserve the freedom a person should have to drink and drive. Taking note from the very basis of our judicial system that 10 guilty people roam free to preserve one innocent man, a law should only be enacted if the number of people effected exceeds 10% of the population. Now, I agree that is an extreme example. I wouldn't wait until 3.5 million Canadians were dying in DUI accidents to enact an anti-drinking and driving law. However, 3.3 million deaths vs the actual 1,000 deaths per year sure does put things in perspective. Is the risk of 1/33000 really worth impeding on everyone's personal freedom? What about 1 in 100,000? What about 1 in 1,000,000? Where is the line drawn? Does anyone get what I'm saying? You can't put the needs of a few ahead of everyone else. I mean, 1,000 people out of a population of 33 million is nothing. **dodges flying tomatos**
