  1. No thats your opinion of a problem your familiar with. each fishery has its own unique problems. Keeping the 5 of the "big ones" is one of the many factors that have led to the decline of brook trout genes in Southern Ontario. Ive never mentioned your fishery I was talking about southern Ontario. Best if you dont know what your talking about to not come off as an authority on the subject. Oh and Andy Millman is this character on a show in a show on the Comedy Network called Extras, Very subliminal and intelligent show.
  2. Oh no doubt we are doing our best to wipe out the southern ontario brook trout weve lost three streams in the town of kitchener in the last ten years. But Im talking about genetics which is what the OP is about.
  3. In the words of Andy Millman"Is he having a laugh"Thats so very far from the truth actually. Your trying to preserve the best genes. Thats why the limits are set the way they are in Nipigon. In southern Ontario we have rewarded fish that reach maturity precosiously by removing any "keepers" that people might get continually throwing back the small ones. Now our streams are overrun with genetically inferior stunted trout. In streams where size restrictions have been put in place(credit river) brook trout average size has increased greatly in a very short time BECAUSE of their short life span and quick progression through generations.
  4. Ive been saying for years that the secret to recovering the brook trout fishery in southern ontario would be to make the limit 5 of which only one can be over 8 inches.
  5. Saturday I am going crappie fishing as well am starting a little further north at that other place I mentioned but maybe moving down to your spot later. If you see a couple of guys in a green dagger canoe that will be us. We might be way up top in the lake though.
  6. Wow Sudbury eh, not exactly a well known steelhead area. Manitoulin is going to be the closest. The French gets a trickle of them but to target them would be a tough task. St Mary's is probably your best bet.
  7. Oh I think youd be suprized by the amount of naturally reproducing chinooks as well. I know tribs of the Notty were chinook Young of the Year outnumber Rainbow YOY 3/2.
  8. Dont worry Jigger your not alone it takes a big man to admit they are wrong. I dont know you from squat but my opinion(which in my egocentric world is a thing of high value) just went up a bunch of notches. Education is the key to all fisheries the more we clear up misconceptions the better.
  9. I cant speak for Ontario tribs but ive seen the numbers for fishways from most of the streams in Ontario andthe majority of the fissh are unclipped and assumed to be the product of natural reproduction. Ive done electrofishing on creeks that are no more than drainage ditches and have found naturally reproduced smolts in them. Im not deluded Im informed. Instead of beiing a negative nelly get out there and join a club and do your part to make the fishing better.
  10. Somewhere in there you have to fit a cup holder....Hold on are we talking about a woman or an inflatable pontoon??? Im confused... This is why I see a therapist.
  11. Um I hate to think what would happen when at the critical moment you got a hit. You might be sleeping on the couch for the rest of your life.
  12. I use to be huge into steelheading and lots of my buddies still are. My thousands of dollars worth of equipment just sits in the closet. Break it out once in while for a fall Lake Superior trip. Otherwise Id rather be Musky fishing or suprise, speck fishing.
  13. Thats a good question. One I can never figure out. Why would people want to spend opening day doing something they could have been doing for the last two months.
  14. The 500 a week 250 weekend sounds reasonable but remeember they wont be guest they'll be customers.
  15. Always been last Saturday in April. And outside of a few small lakes up north there really is no put and take fishery.
  16. Generally the farther you get from an access point the better the fishing is.
  17. Best of luck let us know how it works out
  18. How big of a fourteen footer could you line it up some rapids? Kokoko lake is a great smallie /walleye/pike lake just off of Temagami.
  19. Gentleman when it comes to tarpon fishing from shore your thinking to big. I cant give away my spot but find the nursery habitat. I fish them with a six weight fly rod and catch all kinds of fish in the 3 -8 pound range the fight is all the same aas the bigger fish just takes less time.
  20. And how far north was that Ramble? We are talking about someone just starting out. And yes brook trout fishing can be good when the water temp warms up a bit because of aquatic insect activity. But that is only for Specks not lakers. Ive worked in the fishing industry for to long and have heard to many couldnt catch any stories to recognize a future one. Im one of those old timers you speak of I have been going to the park for 30 years now(since I was a teenager). Ive caught trout there at all times of the year that it is open, but with the right equipment. Im not saying he wont catch any fish but I am saying hes choosen a time that I wouldnt choose if I was sending a beginner party with no knowledge of what they are doing.
  21. Water temp preferences for trout are in the mid to low fifties. By late May surface temps will be low to high 60's. Ive even found 70's in shallow back bays. Find steep drop offs with logs that have fallen from shore and extend down into the water. Fish the shady side of the lake. And watch and listen for fish on the surface.
  22. The more I read your OP the more I realize you are totally new to this. I dont want to discourage you but like most beginners your going about this wrong. Algonquinn for trout is an Ice out thing. First couple weeks of the season are best after that fishing tales off greatly unless you have the proper equipment to fish deep. If your interested in catching fishthen you might as well go later and fish bass. If your interested in catching trout you need to be in the park earlier or drive a little farther up north for late May. (Timmins area)As far as the books and info on the Park take them with a grain of salt. When ever Ive been asked where I was fishing Ive always lied and Im sure Im not the only one.
