Is florocarbon leader REALLY better than mono leader?
rhare replied to okumasheffield's topic in General Discussion
I gotta agree with whats been said, mono will work just as well as fluoro. I have been using the chameleon and ultra green as long as I can remember with great results when drifting. In fact, because I bounce more then drift I often just run stright 6# in gin clear water with no problems. hummm -
I never said you have never caught an atlantic either, I was simply making a point. theres no need to get bent out of shape over a debate about a fish neither one of us caught. rigger season is just starting there's a whole summer of atlantic debates to be had

Well look whos stiring the pot again Im not knocking anyone. Maybe you guys catch 1000's and 1000's more fish then me..... but at least I know what Im catching Thank you tonyb

I bought a couple of them last year from costco. They are a great deal and a nice little kayak. Easy to fish out of and very stable. As a entry level kayak they are a great value. I have one up for sale in the classifieds in like new condition. might save you a few bucks if your serious. Ryan

No we know, its a brown. If you caught some atlantics like you said you did before then you wouldnt be arguing up and down that it could be an atlantic. So say your right, it has some spots on the gills, a few spots above the LL. But the tail section looks nothing like an atlantic and easily id's it as a brown.

So what is the purpose then? If returns and angling success are no factor what so ever then why are OUR tax dollars going towards a program thats whole purpose is to bring back a fish that was unable and has been unable to sustain its self for decadeds.??? Sounds like a feelgood news story if you ask me, money could be much better spent cleaning up the lake or stocking more successful sport fish. Our stocking progam is dismal when compared to the US program. Thank god they spend money on more then just unsuccessful programs

100% a brown. The spots are spread well below the lateral line, more spots on that fish then on an atlantic. Different face then an atlantic. The atlantic stocking pogram is a waste of money. They intend on spending another 5million dollars over the next 5 years!! since may 2006 almost 1 million atlantics have been stocked on the canadian side. Last year was the best returns with not more then a handful returning. So whats the point? They are not stocked for eating and chinny's and coho's are a better sport fish anyways. just my 2cents

hey everyone This weekend I headed down to Niagara and pulled my boat out for a shot at the river. I thought I had my batteries all charged up but something clearly didn't work out. After only 3 drifts on Saturday I lost power and had to head in. The weather was nice, hardly any boats and we had hooked a fish on each drift. Oh well thats life Off to Home depot to buy a extension cord and I plugged her in at the hotel over night. Things seemed to go well and the batteries where all charged up. This morning the weather was much colder, breezy and not near as fun as yesterday. We worked away on the US side but didn't mark much so we headed back over to the Queenston drift and started picking up fish right away. We hit fish on the next 4 drifts. I vowed for the at the boat before the net is out release ;D intentional of course. Dan kept me busy with the camera and the net and running the trolling motor well he banged nice steelies. We managed 4-5 and called it a day. Too cold for my hands! Ran into Paul from Cast Adventures out on the river with a boat full of happy fishermen river is loading up give him a call. Here's a few pics, one male was purple he was so dark. Tightlines Ryan

Well another season has come and gone and its been another excellent year on Simcoe. This weekend we fished off the North shore between the 6th and 7th line oro. Saturday was a tough bite, we had a hard time finding aggressive fish. I could not keep a fish on to save my life! I had 8 fish come unbuttoned before I finally put my first fish on the ice. We moved out to deeper water around 110 and found some active schools of whities. Dan put a hurting on them with the badboy landing 4 and missing a bunch more in a hour. Steve managed one and missed a couple and I landed a laker... go figure. Moved back to 90fow and found some more active laker's and landed a few more before we called it a day. Weescot hand a good day landing a beauty laker around 5lbs Only snapped a couple shots then the camera died. Alex with a little whitie to start the day fisheye view Hoping Sunday was going to be a action packed day, Dan,Alex and myself headed way out to 105fow and looked for some whities to start the day.Steve and his friends came out and met us. Wow how things had changed, nothing marking at all. After a 1/2 hour of little to no action I had enough and packed up and went towards 95fow looking for some laker's. It didn't take long and I was into my first of the day. The action was steady and we landed a bunch of nice laker's. I gave Steve a call to come in and just as he answered I hooked into a hefty laker. A great way to end the season!! My hut was on fire all afternoon, after landing a bunch more fish I started inviting people in to fish and get in on the laker's. Everyone that came in landed 1-3 fish. It was a great afternoon bite with beautiful weather, what a way to end the season. We iced around 20 fish today and everyone got in on the action Tightlines Ryan Hare Dan with one Steve with a scrappy laker Kelli with a beauty fish Alex loving the laker's! Me with a nice one to end the year.

Even though it was a bad luck day I decided to hit the lake with some friends and see if I could get them into some fish. We fished the north shore of kemp and started in 85fow. The fish started off aggressive eagerly ripping off bottom after our tubes. After a couple hours and a some fish landed action slowed. Steve and I met up with his dad and decided to move out to 95ft and see if we could find some more active fish. We set his dad up showed him a few tips and he was into fish in no time. Steve and I fished together and managed a few more. Again action slowed so we headed in and stopped in one more spot in 72fow, marked a few fish and I managed one more but we paked it up after 15 mins and called it a day. I iced 7, steve iced 6 and everyone else got into some fish. All and all not bad for a slow day. With the way the weather is shaping up this final weekend is going to be killer. get out there and get em' tightlines Ryan Hare kevin doing battle, well his dad looks on The catch Steve with one A wee one for me Jesse doing battle for the crowd What blood ? Colin with a decent Laker Steve and his dad each with one what a guy! get out of the hut for a pic!!!! ;D ;D me with one to finish off the day

wire > braid
-
wire divers are deadly!!! wire isnt all that expensive, I would probably change it over time is gets kinks and bends that weaken it. Better to change the line then loose a trophy fish. If im not mistaken I used a albright knot between the wire and the braid backing. you then need to attach a snubber to the wire. The snubber attaches to the diver. I then add a lead long enough that I can still land the fish. remember you cant reel past the diver so too long of lead will become a problem when landing fish.
-
you can use braided line with dipsey divers, or wire (more depth) a dropped weight system can also get you down to the fish. In simcoe I like to use flutter spoons like suttons or Nk 28's. silver and silver green are very productive
-
Just because simcoe is stocked doesnt make it any different, Large fish are still very important and the numbers of natural trout being caught in the lake is starting to raise dramaticly. Why is depths over 40 questionable? These are Lakers not walleye! Lake trout have no problem expelling gas, you never see them with their bladder hanging out even when brought up from 100fow+. They are a hardy fish and as long as they are handled carefully C&R is no problem at all. A fish bleeding from the gills should be a keeper. I dont keep fish very often but if I damage them then its an obligation to not let them go to waste. I know its crappy to keep a 7-8lbs fish but its better then it possibly becoming bird food. Remember the membrane of the gills is what distributes oxygen into the blood of the fish so it can live or "breath" you might say. how easy would it be to breath with a hole in your lung?? tightlines Ryan

I only use stradics they are the best bang for your buck. I have mostly 2500 and 3000. I find the 1000 too small for most of what I do. The mgfb is a sweet reel, its a little lighter but not all that much. the new FI's are deadly and unless money is bo object I would save the extra cash and get a FI. The 3000 series has a sweet paddle handle and holds a bit more line, great for braid. you can also interchange your 3000 and 2500 spools. I personally think a 2500 would be a better all round reel, but it comes down to what suits your needs

Thanks guys LOL... we'll kill em next weekend man
