My Ontario Fish Quest continued today...2 more species!
wolfville replied to 007's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for sharing...I enjoyed the read. -
Victor, thanks for posting. We'll do it again this summer. Pulling a all nighter is a lot of fun that's for sure. We should find somewhere we can start a fire... not sure if that's allowed anywhere.

Thanks for the report, Cliff. I was waiting for this post all weekend ;-) We stayed out Sat night until 4:30am, hope you found the swim clean and tidy when you took over in less than an hour. I am just not as young as I used to be to stay much longer, plus Victor was catching all the fish. LOL We managed a double header around 2am. You should've been there to see how we managed to land both fish with one short net, and avoid "The Log from Hell" (you named it nicely). Anyway, both were landed eventually and they met up on the bank for a picture.

First of all, there is nothing wrong with keeping a few fish for the table as long as it's not breaking the regs. I found it a learning experience for me, as an immigrant. I used to keep more if the fish was eatable size. Then over the years I have learned to really enjoy fishing as a sport. Last year I kept less than 10 fish (all bass between 1 - 2 lb). Although I caught over 200+ bass and probably over 300 lbs of carp (never kept a carp). I also found that people born in Canada are normally better in this regard (enjoy fishing as a sport). I just hope that the time taken for people to learn isn't long enough to damage the fishery. BTW, this is just my observation. Not saying it has to be true or you have to agree.

What fish species do you target most often?

Ha, like you always say...that makes sense ;-) -
Steve, I could've spent more time make them perfectly round. But I don't think that's necessary unless you want to get the extra distance (i.e. make them more aerodynamic). Plus, my 4 years old and 7 years old were tricked to help me roll that batch. Can't really complain ;-) I didn't try a "taste-test", that carp did ;-) Some people actually make SQUARE boilies. They make bricks out of the dough and boil them (or microwave them if they try to make floating ones) that way. And then cut them into cubes of desired size while it's still hard and soft. And these square ones work very well too. I'll try make more when the weather is bad and I can't go out or in the off season. For now, I'll just buy them made by people who know what they are doing and do some post flavouring if I want to.

There is a theory: if they see you, you won't catch them. Always applies to me (applies even when they don't see me ) If they are close to the surface, they are probably not in the mood of feeding. You can try a few things to trigger them to hit. A lot people have had great success free lining bread. (squeeze the bread into a small ball, hide the hook in it, cast it out without any weight or float). Normally you want to try to cast this thing to where they will pass, not where they already are. Or you can throw some sweet corns where they are but don't throw your line in there. Observe their reaction. If they don't feed, there's no point trying. Sometimes the food trigger them into feeding mood. When that happens, almost everything catches. Disclaimer: me no expert, just like to share the little thing I know and get your feedback.

Something is fishy here. So far there are 30 votes and walleye got 17, that should be around 56.6% but it shows up (for me anyway) as 16.xx%. -
Nice report. The second picture is amazing.

Fish... I don't hunt.

Get your hands dirty and eventually you will be good at it. I only tried it once in the off season (had to find something carp-related to do to keep me sane). This was my first try of making boilies, And this is the first fish caught on them, After a few times you'll figure out the secret of boilie making ----- it's much easier to buy
-
Cliff, I knew it.... if I wasn't there then you catch fish ;-)
-
Okay, I decided to make this post because Cliff is not used to make posts .... when we didn't catch nothing. Ok, well, almost nothing. He did catch his PB today..... his first ever seagull ;-) That poor thing flew right into his line and got himself wrapped good. It also set off the bite alarm, did a proper drop back and then a run. We actually had to use the net to net it and untangle it from the line. But I had a good time just chatting with him and Bly. Catching is just part of fishing, we sure did very well in all other aspects. Cliff/Carole, hope we'll do this (sans skunking) again.

May I ask.....how much is that 10' Mark IV carp rod? Not that I can afford it... And to match a rod like that you need to get a vintage reel from the 50'. After watching a few video of Chris Yates, I've been wanting to try one out.... at least in my dreams.

Cliff, those fish jumped to tell you that they missed you two. They were abused by me so much that they had to complain ;-) Seriously though, they respond to sound at certain range. Some places they respond to boat motor noise so boating become dangerous, you could be hit by a carp on your face. Glad to know fish are back to the area. Hope you two catch a lot of fish tonight (he he he).

Can someone define "invasive species", and is carp is one of them? and why MNR lists them in its publication informing people where they can be caught, has the official record, and calls them an "alternate species". For the record, carp was introduced to North American around 100 years ago by U.S. goverment, can't remember exactly but Canada might have done the same. Just like some salmon/trout species in the great lake. They were invited here. Proves that some people really just don't know them enough to like them (or dislike them).

Didn't realize what you really meant...man I am slow. Terry, from what/how I read all the replies, I don't think Photoz's post was directed at you. Maybe he is a bit upset about you because the flashing image in your signature doesn't include carp. Just kidding, he probably has mistaken that bluegill as a fat carp LOL. Take it easy, I didn't, but I do now.

Don't hate something you don't understand. What you don't care might be very cared by others. Just a friendly suggestion. Some people don't like carp because they think it's ugly and not good eating. I'd again suggest to go to a supermarket if you want to eat fish, and go to a aquarium if you want to see pretty fish. If they have bad effects on other fish, explain to me why you can still catch muskies, walleye, bass, and whole bunch of other things after carp has been in Scugog for so many many years. Carp population costs virtually nothing for MNR or the government to maintain but it provides a lot of fun for people targeting them (tell me when was the last time you catch a 20lb fish from shore), it even attracts a lot of people from foreign countries to spend money to get here to fish for them. What is so bad about it? Oh well, hope I don't get this thread axed.

I have had some store bought boilies in my bag for almost a year and never had enough confidence in them. But after catching the first carp on a boilie last Sat, I tried again yesterday with the ones I made last year (had to find something to do in the off season) and caught the first carp on my home made bolies. I believe you don't need to use boilies to catch carp but they do have their advantage (biggest one to myself is that they stay on the hook much better and the presentation is better than corn/maize on a hair). BUT, catching a carp on the boilies you made youself gives you a totally different level os satisfaction.... However, I do agree, buying them is much less messy. And they aren't really expensive considering I caught 4 fish on Sat with the same boilie.

Mike, remember, at the time Cliff fished, he didn't even get any Vitamine D ;-) I seriously start to think it's because of me that the never-skunked couple start to not catch... BTW, I was there yesterday afternoon, got a 20lb in the first 20 min and then one more taker but that fish didn't know how to properly hook itself. Let's blame the weather, that huge pike caught there yesterday, and everything else ;-)
-
Steve, I think your post spook the fish. Don't you know they all read posts on OFC now?
-
Mike, that swim of yours looks great. Good vegetation growth and structure. How did you do that? LOL If you fish THE local swim 24/7. You will see me more than my wife will ;=)

Welcome aboard. Sorry I can't help you much either, but I heard that there is no sturgeon in Sturgeon Lake and there is no sparrow in Sparrow Like....does that mean .... Just kidding. Good luck and wish you a good time there.

Should have known the Carp would be off....
wolfville replied to ccmtcanada's topic in General Discussion
Actually, I prepared a full busket of cooked/soaked maize and amazed afterward that I used probably less than 10%. I slingshot probably 5 times out in total. The main reason was that the fishing was slow at the beginning.... I didn't want to over-chum it. Then the action picked up and I had to leave soon..... BTW, I didn't keep any of the fish in case some of you wondered. But I gave a boilie to the pike fisherman and within 10 minutes I saw him fighting a carp.... maybe ....just kidding. But with just ONE boilie that's been in my bag for about 1 year and he caught fish, I don't know why I was skunked for a week before yesterday....I think that's the PHOTOZ syndrom LOL Cliff, hereby I am giving you the notice that I might be fishing your spot tomorrow around noon. And please kindly grant me permission ;-) I promise I will get skunked tomorrow so tomorrow night you'll have a good outing ;-) -
What? you mean there are other species? Just kidding. Yeah, hope it's not too serious.
