currently im using an 8wt loomis nrx fly rod, but a 9'6 spinning ml or m wil work perfectly fine
-
those shots are awesome....got to see the snowbirds today as they flew over the school in whitby, i was fishing another creek and heard the roar, then saw the team fly right over our heads
-
its a water temp/water level thing....they run into the creeks october
-
same reason they're stocking atlantics
-
there is no definite answer, they'll run when they are ready, this time last year i was catching them in the creeks
-
hmmmm not too encouraging on the seaguar......i have both brands, power pro on my long spinning rod, and the seaguar on my bait caster....so i guess i will see first hand how the 2 compare....
-
wow.....glad you made it out safely, what did the rental company have to say?? im sure they will be pressing charges as well.
i would definitely be pressing charges beyond what the pig patrol gave him
-
I've recently started using a bait caster, and mono and fluoro just have too much memory on those reels, anyone use seaguar kanzen braid? http://www.sail.ca/en/catalogue/fishing/fishing-lines/1854/kanzen/
-
i think this one was chasing bait fish in close, stomach was packed full, and the eggs were small and very tight
-
thanks.....think thats the cleanest salmon i've ever caught, not a mark on her anywhere
-
so my plan for this evening was fly fish for bass and pike, got down to the area i wanted to fish, too windy for fly fishing, after a few failed casts i brought out the bait caster, tried that fora bit, blew up the reel, got frustrated and went to my small spinning rod, after snagging up and having to retie a couple of times, i gave up, someone didn't want me fishing that spot, soi gave and grabbed my long spinning rod and a spoon, 3rd cast wham, fish on, landed this beauty, i now have dinner for a month! lol
thats an 18" butchers steel for reference
-
i use a surgeons for all line to line connections, make sure to moisten the line really well and take your time cinching the knot so you don't heat the line which will cause weaknesses in fluoro and mono
-
Hero drifts on the eastern ditches? You'd probably start a riot, lol.
lol yea no kidding.....i'd probably get shot in oshawa, port hope, not likely to see another fisherman where i fish
-
you got a reel made on a monday
-
Why not stick with the bait caster he's got already and get a nice 10 1/2 foot medium wt. steelhead rod. For his " drift/float fishing " in the tribs I don't think spinning gear is any advantage.
i think thats how most of us stream fisherman started, i know i did, down at the ganny with a 9.5 ft spinning rod and reel, used it for 2 seasons, saw the advantage of the longer rod, so i upgraded, used aspinning reel on my 11.5 ft rod, the next season got my float reel
the only advantage comes when doing the 'hero' drifts of 50yrds or more. most cases you have a 10-20yrd drift at most and the free spooling has no advantage
-
for the smaller tribs, like the bowmanville for example, i have an 11.5ft streamside float rod, steelhead edition, its an imx-8 blank paired with an okuma float reel, its about a $260 setup (100 for the rod and about 160 for the reel) i love it, worked very well for the salmon with 12lb test on it and vvery well for the trout with 6lb test. but if you already have a decent reel, double up your budget for the rod, and then next year, purchase a reel upgrade
-
you want a rod to have a strong back bone to turn these fish, theres no worse feeling than watching a fish speed off and you can't stop it, you have one of 2 choices, chase it down or break it off, for the reel, you want a good drag system with a good line capacity
-
if you can up your rod budget up to about $100, you have a few really nice options like the streamside rods, if you have another spinning reel at home, just that, otherwise, check out ebay or kijiji for good deal on nicer gear
-
don't forget about commuters going into and out of toronto on a daily basis at near idle speeds on the 401

No mention of Coho's, which will readily take flies, jigs, and harware up rivers, and chase them down well into December, far superior river fish then Chinooks, just half or a third of the size, hot afraid to getr airborne as well
cohos and chinooks in the rivers are dead long before december, there's a reason why the fish in december are small compared to salmon cause they would be steelhead(AKA Rainbow trout) in december

This is the ultimate rebuttal to some in this thread
On a side note though, Mitchel 300's were and still are, the Cats Meow in reels, Mono is still a go to for many, and I own an Eagle Claw yellow fiberglass rod, in mint condition, handed down to me after years of use by my dad, Bass fishing in a 12 foot tinny he got from his Dad. Tourneys make "OUR" world go round. They are legal, well controlled, and tons of fun to watch on WFN. I would rather share the water wit an experienced Bass angler in a bass boat, than a weekend warrior towing speedo clad idiots in inner tubes or water skis all blinkin weekend.
But that's just me......
nice!!.....the old cardinals last forever as well
-
Electrical tape or a few yards of mono will work just fine. Lucky you didn't hook up with a fish because you would have gotten spooled, lol!
lol i woulda put on my cloth glove and started hand lining
or try to snap my fluoro leader
-
Let's not get silly... If you river fish for salmon, you've flossed a few intentional or not.
hehe nope, have only caught 3 out of the creeks, river mouths and piers i have caught quite a few more
-
sorry but i have never 'flossed' a salmon in the creeks, all my hookups have been corner of the mouth on the inside, i have a couple of pictures that show this as well,
i use pink worms when float fishing, for flies,
throw in some intruder patterns for fly fishing, an 8 wt will be fine, just make sure your leader is heavy enough
