  1. Can't argue with you there Rattletrap. I know in the past there was some arrangement between some US states and provinces where drivers licenses were pulled until the traffic fines for example were paid in full. I don't know about today. I love when a person coming into Canada with huge bags full of meat and fish and who knows what food and they only get a slap on the wrist. Imagine cooking that thawed room temperature chicken after flying 1/2 way across the globe, mmmmm good. Same for not declaring cash above 10 CDN. "Oh so sorry Sir, I forgot I had that extra $5000.00 in cash!" The stupid look on their faces says it all. "Who me?" But find a couple of joints and CBSA acts like they just busted Pablo Escobar.
  2. If this thing gets worse before it gets better I strongly believe that it may bring us closer together as a human race rather than further dividing us as it has been for the last several years. SirCranksalot. I was thinking more in terms of something more entertaining than exercise, Yoga and reading a book. Something that can keep the attention of an 8 year old for more than 15 minutes for yoga. 15 minutes exercise, now we have 15 hours left to kill.
  3. One of the 1st things I was told when I got into supervision at Stelco in the mid 70's was to say "no" to anything asked by a member of 1005. Pre Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1978. I thought things changed for the better. I thought all the dinosaurs were gone. Pete S. and Bill G. were the only ones still working from my days I was told. Oh yea your new Vice President. I failed him after his 1st Blower training, now he's vice pres. after US Steel gave him the pink slip. What did I know? You haven't bought into that old wives tale re: Batteries collapsing if shut down did you Pics? Damaging yes but not a total loss. Banked or blown down Blast Furnaces can last years shut down if done properly blown down i.e. 100% void of any materials for relines. Banked is when filled with burden for a start up after a long shutdown such as when down for the 3 months after the 81' and 90' strikes.
  4. Dat dem der are Briflies.
  5. Not seen a Robin yet, heard a Woodpecker go at it and a Red Winged Blackbird was around, a Blue Jay was on the back deck stealing the peanuts I left out for the squirrels. That's a new thing for me to stay home, feeding critters. Everyone has asked what I'm doing differently. Oh yes big time, instead of going into town maybe twice a week I 'm only going in once every 10 days. Planning on a big outing tomorrow, pick up my boat from Dunnville and going to the drive trough at A&W 1st. Then fill the boat and all the jerry cans I have with cheap hi test at the Esso station there. I will go into CTC to see if they have any gas cans I can fill up. Not too long back there was a lot of white on the shores of Lake O and Erie was almost covered in ice on the 1st day of spring.
  6. I second that "Amen."
  7. I hear you. I was a hand shake away from selling the StarCraft Superfisherman 190. I am so glad I didn't. For what I would have sold it for I would be several 1000's of bucks short to get into a 14 or 15' side council. When I was at my Marine guys showroom a few weeks ago they had a 19'6" Crestliner on sale for $49,000.00, 15K off. Much deeper and wider with a 200 HP 4 stroke and a dual axle tandem trailer. Not this year, maybe next year who knows. Our boat isn't perfectas it occasionally leaks. After some outings water drains from the bilge, some days dry as a bone. She's a 94', 26 years old, well beyond it's best before date for any aluminum pleasure craft boat, the experts say a tin boat's life expectancy is 15 years . I could spend a few bucks on replacing the old carpeting and a new VHF, might as well upgrading the GPS and sonar while I'm at it, a screen can't be too big for me. The 26 year old 24V front electric troller is kaput. I sure don't Bass fish much anymore but that's the 1st thing I would upgrade. It's not the end of the World if I don't have a new $1500.00 whatever unit. In the blink of the eye I just spent nearly 4K and I'm doing all the work. Where can you be safer than out in the middle of the lake with a 1st mate 6 feet away from you. Unless it's the partner you sleep with. 6' away would be a separate bed. If this becomes an epidemic I'm going fishing. I'll launch at a pals Marina only 17 minutes from us if all others are closed. Yes lets get all dem purdy boats wet. ASAP. Johnny D/Selkirk ON.
  8. Yes I hope I am more diligent when in public, like sneezing or coughing into my elbow. With my chronic sinus problems I don't leave home without a pocket of tissues and constant dripping and sneezing. Using sanitizer without thinking twice. Will anyone ever shake another's hand again? As for investments I still want to die owing millions. The suit you are buried in doesn't have pockets.
  9. SDM update. Starting tomorrow only 50 people will be allowed in a Shoppers Drug Mart store including staff. My wife's store will have a security guard in the store to monitor this.Nver had a guard on since the store opened 10 years ago. Hopefully the guard can monitor the cosmetics dept. for theft as well. That is all she is doing. 3 sales all night from 4PM to 11PM. The store has been virtually empty all day. I am hoping call of her next shift Sunday. She has a month or vacation pay. Her schedule is day to day now. I hope they lay her off, big severance then for 30 years service. But I in the same breath don't. Getting back to normal would be the best outcome for us all ASAP. That would mean we beat this invisible enemy. This all feels like a bad Sci-Fi movie. Are walking Zombies next? To take them out you must hit them in the head and crush their brains.
  10. Many here have youngsters off school at home and or Grand kids. Can't go to the Zoo or anywhere. We should post a list of things to keep these kids from going nutso. Maybe this can be a constructive thing. Maybe, just maybe they will get bored of video games and social media and put their phones in their pockets for a bit. We don't have kids so I am of no use telling someone what to do with their kids. The only thing I suggested to friends with Grand kids is to create a board game. They said they don't know what a game is unless it's on their electronics. Good point. Show them. Drill holes and put in colourful lights on the thing. I dunno. Where are their parents anyway? I'm told working from home. That has to be tough with little ones running the asylum.
  11. Yes Sir, lots of talk but not much action yet. Imagine how long it would take to get to talk to a human being. I tried to contact my Scotia branch this week . The machine said 2 hour wait for a representative, yea right. I'll just show up I guess. They promised to get all of the Canadians overseas home safely. I know many are trapped in Europe as they can't get a direct flight home. Landing in the US causes all sorts of complications, especially if you don't have money to self isolate for 14 days. Many are out of cash to pay for rooms and food. CHCH news this past week interviewed a young woman from Smithville whom is studying in Ireland and is trapped there and out of money with no friends or family that can get her any. No help from Canadian officials, Canadian Embassy or Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor Air Canada. The hotel she is at is running a tab for her, good on them. In cases like this I am more than happy to kick in a few bucks.
  12. I brought the "Bassassin" in to my marine guy a few weeks ago to get her ready for the season. It didn't get the bottom wet for 2 years and wanted to make sure she was 110% ready to go. The main thing was to pump out all that old gas in the main tank and dump the 5 gallons in the kicker tank. I won't put 2 year old gas in any 2 stroke tool I have. Glad I did take her in as they found a few small things that could be huge on the water, like a bad bilge pump and the power pack was pooched on the kicker as well the power cable to the GPS combo had to be changed. My marine Guru Ted is using a walker now so I had to pay bigger. I've saved thousands over the years helping Ted work on my boat and learned plenty. Such is life. Our trip to Georgina for Perch next month cancelled. No motels available and I'm not sure I would stay in a 5 star Marriot in this thing we are all trudging through today. The up part is traffic on the highways are nil. We might just commute or go to Burwell or Bruce.
  13. 16C today, tomorrow -1. Not great for fishing. Let us know how you made out. I know many are looking for things to do with the kids home from school for who knows how long. A nice walk is better than video games 24/7.
  14. Maybe not enough but 6 grand is a big fine compared to others. Fines must be based on similar fines handed out for similar offences or they will be tossed or adjusted to meet the past fines if appealed. I think that is for all offences. Yes I like that the MNR Watch reports all the names and residences of those charged and convicted. Most from north of Nipissing. The worse poachers seem to be in the Tamagami area. Many hunting outfitters are charged with poaching Bear and Moose as well. You would think they would be the best conservationists. Not all. MNR tips hotline #. 1-877-847-7667. Put it in your phone. I have seen many poachers at work and not hiding it, I should have called it in. Now I have the number I will, every time.
  15. There used to e a pond north of Waterdown on Middle Road open for pay by the inch Trout. Might be gone, it's been many years. We fished there in March when the ice was gone but needed to fish, a lot like Huzzaba is now, can't get enough fishing. I would call before I drove to any Conservation Area. I would venture a guess they are all closed. Staying home means just that. Ontario is basically closed for business.
  16. 50% of those that answered are retired and staying home. I knew there were a few old foggies here but not 1/2. Geoff if you are home and not getting paid apply for E.I. now. I'm sure they are flushed with applications and they are slow getting paper work done in normal times. I have to remind anyone laid off there is no such thing as a temporary lay off unless in a CBA or under a personal contract. If laid off you are eligible for full severance. Not the severance on the MOL website. Severance is based on how long it would take to get employment of the same nature and wages as well as age is taken into consideration. Based on the packages I have seen a worker in their 50's with 25 years service would be given approximately 3 weeks severance per year service, so 1 1/2 years full salary including benefits if applicable depending on the job they had. Better than any E.I. benefits. It would be a windfall for my wife to be laid off as she doesn't have a defined pension plan.
  17. My wife has 2 weeks vacation booked to visit family south. They didn't encourage her to take it they actually did the opposite and asked her to cancel which she did. They have several employees of her Shoppers store that are off with illness so they are short handed. I'm sure no one wants to be anywhere near someone hacking and coughing. Very surprised they haven't closed her cosmetics department but she told me 3 things as to why, 2 are logical. She is the 1st person a customer sees. If she thinks they have a cold etc. she is to ask them to stay there until a Pharmacist talks to them, especially if they are elderly. 2nd she is to ask what they are shopping for, tell them exactly where that is and ask them not to shop or linger, just get what is needed and leave. A few have not taken that advise well, very irate especially Sr's. The 3rd is security. There are small items worth more than a 100 bucks on the shelves. I told her it's easy to MT those shelves and store them. She says it isn't easy and it would take 2 employees 2 days to do it. Difficult isn't a reason not to do something these days. I really wish she wasn't dealing with the public. edit: I just talked to my wife. A few changes at Shoppers. No fliers in the store. A yellow tape is placed at all registers 6 feet from the register, stay behind the yellow line until the person in front is gone. They are planning on putting plastic shields at the registers. They don't know exactly when or how.
  18. Sorry 2 deaths not cases. I don't get paid to be a journalist, thus caveat emptor. Anything we read or hear, even on the news, should be verified by the government web sites, then it changes daily, heck hourly.
  19. Brian with all this misinformation around the best answer is from your Docs office. Call. I do know that my wife has been using hand sanitizer for years as she deals with the public and it sucks the moisture such as natural oils from the skin. Moisturize well. I know she sells spray bottles of water with a fancy name for 1000 times or more than plain old water costs. Her commission cheque will thank you. People (women) will pay anything that might make them feel young, look young is different.
  20. If you own property in Canada you are getting in. Be prepared to be able to prove it with documentation. We have neighbours that are U.S. citizens from NY. They got in yesterday, no problem as they had a copy of their deed they showed Customs and mail with their Canadian address on it. They feel it's better to be out here in the country than where they live in a big city in the states.
  21. My brother and sis in law own a very nice place in The D.R. they were going to stay down there indefinitely to wait out the storm but now even the island has 2 cases of Corona virus. The health care system down there is woeful in the best of times, let alone during a Global Pandemic. Basically nothing, the health workers don't have enough surgical gloves and masks let alone ventilators and equipment for patients. They have to fly into Toronto then change planes to get to Halifax. The US State Dept. has issued the highest travel advisory ever issued CNN reports minutes ago. This is for travelling abroad for any reason. They are saying you might not be allowed to get back home. I saw a young Canadian student from Smithville who studies in Ireland interviewed last night on CHCH TV. She is basically stranded in Ireland as Air Canada can't give her a direct flight to Canada. They would re route her through the US and as soon as she disembarks that plane she is going to have to do the 14 day isolation. No help or answers from Air Canada nor the Canadian Embassy and Federal Gov. I remember being in my 20's and wasn't exactly flush with funds. Hell I remember flying back from Europe once in my early 20's back packing one summer and the 40 bucks in my pocket was my net worth, my buddy had 20.
  22. I have empathy for all workers and businesses country wide. We were planning on doing a perch day or 2 at Georgina. We haven't been for a few years. We were definitely going to spend a night in a local motel and save that drive through T.O. Traffic isn't a problem the highways are basically empty. Staying in a room that who knows was there before us isn't happening. If small motels are open? I wouldn't stay in a 5 star Marriot with all that's going on. These are great opportunities for guys that haul motor homes. I wonder how launching a boat with a motor home is doable.
  23. I'm happy to see the idiot got more than a slap on the wrist. Those were very expensive Pics. https://mnrwatch.com/out-of-season-walleye-fishing-on-lake-nipigon-nets-offender-6000-fine-and-license-suspension/
  24. Anywhere really along the Lake Erie shoreline of Haldimand county. I have sent several fisherman here and no one has ever had the evil skunk eye. Launch at Hoover Marina in Nanticoke and work the shoreline starting east of the marina along Peacock Point and work east until your arms get tired from hauling in big Smallies. For Large Mouth Long Point bay as Albert has suggested. Watch the weather and wind reports closely for Lake Erie. This lake can change in a matter of minutes. Ask HTHM about that. We have all been caught at one time or another and it ain't pretty. Windfinder.com and Sailflow.com are my go to sites. If you are boatless there are many spots along the Haldimand shoreline east of Nanticoke you have access to. From shore opening weekend is your best option depending on when the spawn is over, should be early this year with the mild winter which isn't a good thing casting from shore. A good pair of chest waders help immensely and are actually a must from shore. A tip wading, if the water is murky and you can't see your feet stay on shore. It's rocky and you can snap an ankle if you don't know where you are walking. Casting anything from body baits, jerk baits, rattle crank baits blue on chrome and plain old floating Rappala's, black on chrome. For spinners, tried and true spinner baits with Colorado blades, my favorite colours are white, yellow or blue. Soft shell crabs have a blue tinge to them. If all fails, which it shouldn't, the good old Mepps Black Fury, the smaller size the smaller the Bass, as the size goes up the size of the Smallies go up. I caught my personal best ever on a spinnerbait, blue and white tipped with a worm. Best of luck. The harder you fish the luckier you get.
  25. Scary numbers. But on a positive note they reported 4,025 people with it have recovered. We have several relatives over there some elderly but we can't contact them. When Mom passed no one could find the address books she had. I have to try Facebook.
