FISH -A - THON FOR CANCER 2010
The Urban Fisherman replied to The Urban Fisherman's topic in General Discussion
Hey Gang! Sorry I haven't been able to firm up many details - I was waiting to hear back from the conservation authority about gas motors, trying to finalize a date and have had some recent family developments that ate into my time... I had a few people who really wanted to participate but didn't think they could make the 28th. I want to get as many people involved so if I could get a "show of hands" for hte 28th that'd be huge - if the numbers are to small maybe we'll look at a different date? I might start a "show of hands" thread if we don't get many responses as a newer thread always gets peoples attention... Also I'm away as of tomorrow morning for 4 days so I'll likely pass some things off to somebody else to help out some while I'm away. Cheers, Ryan -
It's definitely 5+ the dude holding it is a big guy - built like an ox - professional body builder and ping pong player.... Also known as a Firefighter.. I've caught plenty of 20+ inch smallies on erie when they school up in the spring and fall and this largie was well over 20 inches... If you look at the release shot you can see how thick it's back is and that it goes from the end of his hand to well up his bisep... Next time I talk to him I'll ask him what he measured up on his rod.. Thanks guys! Enjoy your weeks cheers, Ryan

Another Personal Best!
The Urban Fisherman replied to The Urban Fisherman's topic in General Discussion
Thanks Dano - how's the holidays up north treating you? saw your big smallie on Facebook! Why can't you catch them like that down here? Thanks Alex - Enjoy the river fish shows this aft while vegging out... Thanks Cudz.. lookin forward to some more of those big smallie reports soon... Best lake I've ever fished for the kids.... and yeah I was told that they stocked lakers in there way back when by the people who run the park.... Bow's are fairly easy to get into right after opener and late in the season as well but I don't have the patience to fish them deep during the summer.... as for browns and brookies - I've got the browns dialed in come late september / october... .. but have yet to catch a brookie out of the lake... I'll thank her for ya... I put it up againt the rod to get a measurement at home but haven't done it yet... easily her biggest either way. -
I was on holidays this past week which enabled me to finish 205 feet of crown molding, a bunch of door trim and install tracks and closet doors... We built this closet recently... Crown and bedroom closets finished throughout the house... Ever tried cutting crown molding corners before? Last night marked the last night before the end of my holidays so Averie and I packed our gear in anticipation of a father-daughter session on the lake this morning! Baby brother luke tried on Averies life jacket and wouldn't take it off! haha Morning came fast so a tall order of coffee and hot chocolate was in order... We were both representin' Facts of Fishing this moring! Ah - a boat launch on an early sunday morning - hard to beat it! We had planned to try top waters after yesterdays success and I managed some fish but all little guys again! Averie was patient trying to crank back her topwater lure but eventually gave up and asked if we could use a better lure! She caught a few of these little guys in shallow water... Then we put our electronics to use and managed to find some schooled up fish in 22 FOW... This goes to show that if you're fishing on a budget, even an inexpensive graph like this can help you find and catch more fish! Averie drops her line down and first hit is her new personal best bluegill! Even got the steelhead hold down pat for Solopaddler! I even had time to record half the fight because she brought him up from 20 FOW... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1w1WeVQFxU She pounded these brutes for a while - completely schooling me while I casted topwaters aimlessly towards shore... Finally I gave up and figured I might as well catch one of them gills - but of course mine was smaller than any of hers! haha After Averie had her fill she wanted to hit the beach for a quick swim... and dad forgot her bikini... so in with clothes... There were all kinds of little minnows schooled up on the beach sand...check this out - dunno what kind they are? Almost transparent... Then it was time to collect things... And call it a day! These brief trips with Averie are the times I cherish most in life! Enjoy the week ahead. Cheers, Ryan

Sleepless muskie report... 5/5
The Urban Fisherman replied to Fisherpete's topic in General Discussion
Great report! Love the musky reports as I don't get out for them! Check out my pics on the "big bucket" report... They were taken with my older fuji wp the predecessor to the xp10 and I love it. The xp10 is obviously a newer better camera and my wp has taken a serious lickin and still takes great fishing pix. Cheers, Ryan -
Lots of people caught their personal best largies in that lake! I've got to get me a good scale! How'd you make out the other day when you went? Thanks dude! Any day on the water is worth while! It'd be a heck of a lot more awesome if I made that cast tj! Haha They're always clean looking fish out of that lake cudz! The problem is it's a small body of water and I often see people keeping fish that size! Once they get to be a pound or so they're at the top of the food chain... Except for bigger bass there's nothing to keep the population in check which results in a wack load of small fish and a handfull of pigs like that. Not a ton of 2 to 3 pounders. I wish they would have stocked it with smallies to! Average depth on the main body is 30 to 40 feet. Thanks dude. They just stocked the lake with fresh rainbows (aka bass food) a couple weeks back! Haha I'm sure those big guys eat their fare share of those farm raised bows! I can't wait for late season browns myself!

yepp nothing beats time on the water with your kids! Cheers, Ryan -
Took my friend Jay and his brother Ryan ( great name by the way ) out to my local lake... The plan was to guide them into some good fish but I didn't plan to get destroyed! The day started off hot with this BRUTE on a topwater frog. Ryan's personal best - and by far the best fish of the day! Any guesses on weight? I'm thinking it was pushing 24 inches long but he's going to measure his rod and get back to me... Normal Hold... And here's a hold for Fishing 24/7! Oh yeah... he caught it from the dock... before we even got the boat in the water! The release... So we hit the lake and enjoyed a nice flat morning on the water... We might as well have left right after that because everything else pretty much went downhill from there.. I couldn't buy a decent bite today but managed a whole pile of these little guys... Notice the less than impressed look on my face... How sexy lookin' is that stump? Can't do a report without a pic of the worlds greatest sportfish.. And then Ryan show's me up once again with this decent fish... Jay's still working hard for his first bite of the day.... And finally - persistance pays off and Jay bags his only fish of the morning! Same baits, same spots and just can't buy a bite sometimes... And here's a first for me at the reservoir! A great couple of hours on the water with buddies... doesn't get any better than that. Cheers, Ryan

ah the mighty bluegill! My daughters first fish as well! Good for her - and you dad! Cheers, Ryan

NF - SUV + 3 car seats
The Urban Fisherman replied to The Urban Fisherman's topic in General Discussion
my god I haven't done a vehicle search before as I've always known exactly what type of vehicle I wanted and it's crazy how many brands there are even in the same size class and type of SUV... there must be a dozen or more in the size i'm looking for... -
NF - SUV + 3 car seats
The Urban Fisherman replied to The Urban Fisherman's topic in General Discussion
Thanks Hometown! Problem for me isn't practicality or towing power as I've only got a little boat anyway. It's that I'm still young, most of my homies are still finishing their post grad educations, partying hard and not even in committed relationships. Ginny and I fast-tracked with Averie being an "oops" baby DURING university and we just went with it from there. What I'm saying is that I want a vehicle that I still consider to be somewhat "young and stylish". I love my kids to death, and wouldn't trade them in for the world, but it doesn't change the fact that I want a vehicle that I can look at and WANT to drive! It's just personal preference and not a knock to anybody else!!! Thanks for the leads guys! Cheers, Ryan -
NF - SUV + 3 car seats
The Urban Fisherman replied to The Urban Fisherman's topic in General Discussion
Yeah - working on a limited budget Drifter! If money was no issue I'd be buying a full sized 4 door pickup... I'm sure you could fit 3 car seats side by side in the back of Tundra! Astro's - Safari's etc. I just can't do it... This isn't going to be a secondary vehicle, it'll be a primary and only vehicle for now and I refuse to drive a van! haha Right now I'm looking at the Acura MDX and GMC Envoy XL as options... Might have to venture up to the 12 - 13 grand range.... Thanks for the info - any more ideas or experiences with vehicles of this size class would be muchly appreciated... cheers, Ryan -

Done - Good luck to her! -
First off I love Berkley's Heavy Weight sink worms.... there's no doubt that senko's catch a wack of fish, and they were my go-to worms for a while but berkley's version casts just as far, has just as good or better action, and they are a HECK of a lot more durable! The thing i hate about Senko's is they fall apart after 1 good bite... Colors - White Greens Black Pink Senko's do work great for those of you considering giving pink a shot... Cheers, Ryan

Nice Pigs dude! I can't wait for some fall bassin'! It's just around the corner! cheers, Ryan

Alright, I have a question out of shear curiosity... If one were to possibly need a vehicle that could handle 3 car seats but refused to succumb to driving a mini van or a car what sort of options are out there? And it has to be in the 8 to 12 grand range... Thanks again! Ryan Ps. For those wondering about the Fish-A-Thon, I'm on holidays as of today so I'm going to have an official thread up soon!

I just wanted to give a shout out to Rotten Ronnies and the Long Point Bay Anglers' Association for putting on the Annual Kids Sunfish Tourny... It's a two day event, which they put on for the kids! I think it's a great way to get the young ones into angling! Averie looks forward to it each year and manged to win a prize this year! I couldn't be more proud! It's on again tomorrow and I believe weigh in is once again by 3 p.m. at Rotten Ronnies! Here's some pix of the kid... Her first of the day - she didn't even put him in her bucket! I wish I had that kind of confidence when fishin' tournaments! haha Then she hit up the multi species program for a while with a few perch... To bad it wasn't a perch derby because she was on fire with them today! This Rock bass had no upper lip! And her biggest of the day - Don't worry he's still alive... just not happy Waiting to weigh in... And the weigh in! lol Good Enough for a prize and a picture for the local paper with the bigger boys! Thanks again to Jimmy, the gang at Rotten Ronnies and to the LPBAA for putting this on for the kids... hopefully we can get more involved tomorrow and in the years to come! Cheers, Ryan & Averie

My parents are down visiting for the week so my brother, Dad and I hit the reservoir for a couple hours before breakfast today. Dead flat water this morning... we've had a bit of a cold front come through this week and the fish weren't near as active as they usually are on the surface... Caught a wack of these... Kept my brother busy who's new to fishing.... And some of these... The old man had a tough morning but managed a few of these little pip-squeeks... And I rounded off the morning with a couple of better fish - but not the 5lb'ers we were looking for... A funny point, my brother casted over a tree branch and while he was trying to get his line off a little largie smashed his senko! Hope you guys enjoy the rest of your long weekend! Cheers, Ryan

Hey Guys, I've already gotten a couple of PM's from people who'd like to be Fish-A-Thon'ers and I've even had offers for potential prizes! It amazes me how fast the people of OFC respond. Hopefully by tomorrow afternoon we'll have a date set and we can really start to lay out a plan! Cheers, Ryan -
FISH -A - THON FOR CANCER 2010
The Urban Fisherman replied to The Urban Fisherman's topic in General Discussion
Got it! DO it up Dan! Thanks again for offering to help out with this! It was at Deer Creek last year. I've had suggestions from friends like James Hind who was last years big winner with the most pledges, but if it all works out I think we'll be doing at Deer Creek again. Beautiful spot and if I can I'll pre-fish and figure them out to see if I can get everybody on some good fish! I haven't looked the calendar, but just for the sake of getting everything done on time and having the most advertising, pledge donation time and success of the event the 28th would be better... we'll see what everybody has to say about dates... Cheers, Ryan
