  1. no man its the weirdest thing... ...got home, opened the cooler and thats what I found. Looked like it needed a pic. Whats even weirder is I was wishing for the magical pint ferries to show up all day and then i get home and lo' and behold!!!! All in all not a bad day.
  2. 3 hours of fishing and 13.5 lbs to show for it. Excellent way to start the ice season!!!!! (Evan if your reading this you will like this one!)
  3. Agreed...good lake. Though I would east past Shining Tree. Though more than 6 hours...unless your a Nascar driver and a wee crazy....the #144 is a crazy highway.
  4. VERY NICE!!!!!!! I can't wait....checked a local lake out here today and found just about 2 inchs...but still kinda sketchy away from the shore. I will wait for at least another week and then its gonna be a splake bonanza!!! Good lord I wished they stocked brookies out here...
  5. same line I use for everything else...6 lb. Ande dark green
  6. Little Canoe Camp... It's on Rainy Lake. 1.5 hours from International falls, Minnesota border. Drive right to it, put your boat in, and hammer fish. All species are there. Its a little rustic (bring your own food and gear type thing) Pm me if you want contact info for the operator. Check out post from a few weeks ago.. I think it was called "Fall in Nothwestern Ontario'
  7. Alaska....oh the fabled land. I need to go there. Awesome...simply awesome.
  8. Well I am finally going to attempt to post something with pictures of fish. Bin a member for a while now but I am basically lazy and do not bring a camera with me when I go out in the boat. A buddy of mine came out (Fort Frances) for ten days and we spent the time at a camp another buddy of mine operates. We usually head down to Shining Tree this time of year for birds and late fall walleye but I convinced him the birds were thicker up here and the fish were definately bigger...so he made his way. Anyways he brought his camera so we got a few shots....I will basically let the camera tell the story...oh and sorry for some of the shots not being perfect...but if you look close at the first pic i am sure you will figure out why Here goes.... The departure from the landing: Our destination for the week..a ravaging heinous journey across pike infested waters..about 150 yards: The $1000 cooler...comes complete with a blueberry pie. If you were stuck in the bush what would you pay? First night supper...butterflyed moose tenderloin, perfectly seasoned. The truck Bernie fixed and Cliffs first chicken of the week (thanks again Bernie!) Saturday morning...good way to start the week The reason the Canadian Bass Championship is held on Rainy Lake Cliff with someone elses walleye First decent walleye of the trip The elusive big- ugly bass Cliff with his own walleye The non-typical camping shot Out of 'pops'....HAMMER DOWN! I know where they are!!!!!! Awesome place to stay..one of the most beautifull places on Rainy Find the eagle???? I see eagles almost every day out here, all balds...I am sure this was a golden..very cool bird when its 25 ft over your head. Couple of big boys from the choppy goodness of a 25km S/E wind Actually that was the same fish Dinner...the only fish to hit the pan all week. Caught out of a back lake, in a canoe, that leaked, with 1 oar as a paddle in a 20km on shore wind Another tourney winner Big random plane flying over the tree tops..this thing had 4 props and was some kind of military cargo unit...pic does not do it justice but that is 150 ft white pine. And finally the coolest backwoods redneck cookin' unit I have ever seen...you could easily fit a pig in this thing
  9. 'Mustang Arctic-Edition' one-peice all the way!!!! I spent well over 100 hours on the ice last year with just my suit, and a bucket. Several of those days were in the -30's. Untill the end of the year I would walk out to my spots (sometimes with snowshoes) and all I would do is undo the zipper to let your body heat escape. This is quite possibly the best peice of fishing related equipment (next to the Lund ) that I have ever bought. I was out with guys dressed in many layers with Toughduck bibs and jackets on and I was much more comfortable than they were. I must say though that next to the suit you REALLY need a matching pair of boots that will keep your feet toasty all day even if you are sweating. If your feet get cold your screwed! I bought a pair of 'Baffin Titans' rated to minus 100 and they rock!!! Comfy, warm and waterproof. As a side note my buddy has a Hanson and wishes he would have forked out the difference to get the Mustang. Hope this helps.
  10. yeah forgot to mention the less-then-groovy audio.. figured the cinematography would hold its own
  11. Hey all...my girlfriend found this video and just had to show it too me... Thought I would share. http://www.maniacworld.com/twin-baby-moose-in-sprinkler.html
  12. Just picked up a 'new to me' graph from a buddy. It is a "Pinpoint 7520". I have never even heard of them before but when he said $100 I took the chance. Has anyone ever owned or have experience with this model. I have googled it and from what I can determine it is more common down south. Actually didn't find anything with Canadian content. oh yeah and theres LOTS of buttons that I am sure is going to take me many pints to figure out as the manual did not come with it!!!!!! Any help would be good. Thanks and tight lines
  13. 1 ounce or better...sometimes I use a heavy egg weight (with a lighter jig head) up about 2 ft. on the leader if the wind is creating problems....I actually like this method better as I find the jigging action on the tube changes...you get a softer lift/drop with a more natural look to it...only problem is it is more difficult to feel a hit when your over 80+ ft. ..oh and by the way using 6lb fireline...if your carefull and don't horse the fish this stuff is all you need.. its only got a 2lb mono diameter so it cuts the water well and allows for a more vertical presentation
  14. I'll second what troutologist said...I've been doing real well this summer at depths of 80-120 ft in a lake that has max depths of 300, surface temps around 67-69 deg.... JIGGING, JIGGING, JIGGING.....some times its hard with a wind but I found even a good drift over structure to produce. Also use your electronics and find the baitfish down there....as soon as you find them at a decent depth off a steep ridge you will find the big boys. Myself I am a fan of the white 4 inch tube jig but bucktails seem to produce just as well, with a big ugly sucker minnow!!!! Good luck
  15. I will post some pics Johnnyb as it happens...I am building it this week so i"ll give ya the progressive play by play
  16. right on GCD I'll check that out.....this will not be in the sun for long periods of time as I will be using it as a camp in various locations and taking it down when I leave. It is gonna be 12 x 16 though so I am a little concerened about the weight bearing on conduit ( I am assuming this conduit is only 1 inch???)
  17. here in the Fort its been $1.30 for the past month or so... I came out here last May and paid EXACTLY $1.13 a liter for about 7 months and then in feb things started to creap up...believe me those of you who are still back south got a break for a while. We all are gonna have to pay the price untill that water fueled car becomes a reality...and that IS truely the reality of it Its gonna cost me a lot this fall to hunt!!!! There is a LOT of bush roads out here.
  18. This one is gonna have an aluminium phalange for a small wood stove, and we have used this same system with poly for years and never burned it down so I have no concerns about that.
  19. ok gonna make a portable fishing/hunting bivouack that is framed in PVC pipe and has a sewn 'ripstop' shell. I have been exploring the prospector tent idea for some time but just can't justify paying the price when I figure I can build one just as easy, and a LOT cheaper! For many years my friends and i have been building our own every year from cut birch saplings and covering it with poly. This works good but every year we have to rip it down and stash the poles in the bush (which rot eventually) and then throw away our 6 ml poly (which is much easier to bring IN on a roll then to take OUT in an annoying ball of plastic!) cause its full of staple holes and such. SOOO.... I am gonna build one that is made of PVC and has a permanent shell that I can just throw over top. All of this will fit into the bed of a truck or a boat easy enough and can be set up quickly. At least thats the idea. Has anybody done this???? Problems to avoid? Any help would be appreciated.
  20. thanks TJ...just ordered their brochure...looks like they may have what I am looking for.. my shack may not have as many wires and cables in it though LOL
  21. Canvas eh??????..... hey TJ, is that a one peice canvas over the Jiggy shack? if so where did ya get it, or how did ya make it? I have been researching prospector style tents for a while now and am looking for something that fits directly on a pre-fabbbed frame? Everything I have found is either ridiculously priced or or not quite what I need.
  22. 3-8 ft of water..back bays off spawning grounds... warm water areas first of the year... Now I have done this with a minnow, hook and splitshot and it works great...STEALTH mode...but I was talking to a knowledgable dude and he swears by leaches using the same pattern...the way I see it it's gotta kill fish..I'm tryin it Sat morning...we were up the lake on Sun and the bays off the spawning grounds are 4-6 degrees warmer than the main lake..around 45 surface temp... and by the way I also picked up a pail of those Gulp leaches, I couldn't resist...they look SWEET and it will save on the cold hands in the minnow bucket...assuming they hold up???
  23. the ice isn't gone!!!!!!!
  24. OK so i need a new graph for the boat....I REALLY think I should get a Lowrance (from research I feel they are my best bet) but I have a Garmin GPS 76csx and I LOVE IT!!!!... greatest tool for the bush or water I have ever bought.... My problem then is that I want to keep my electronics compatible but I am not convinced with the Garmin site that their 'fishfinder' products are superior. Anyone got any hard evidence to convince me otherwise????? I got a wee under a week to figure it out...come Friday one of them is gonna be mounted shotgun!!! thanks all
  25. yup...you pretty much got it right....just got done a 9 hour shift of plowing, ON APRIL 26TH!!!!!!! the only good thing about this fresh snow is that it is HEAVY so hopefully it will drop the over 1.5 ft of ice on the lakes......Bring on the soft water and some Rainy Lake walleye!!!!!!! have fun if your in the sun... brkygetr
