Dax, I've always been under the impression that it was measured from the bottom of the head to the top of the motor housing.

Go with the longest shaft possible if you are concerned...you can always raise it up, but not the other way around if you don't have the length to work with.

Reason I'm asking is I have a 48" PowerDrive, and the shaft is long enough,barely, but I quite often have it lowered all the way down. I was considering switching to a Maxxum, and I see the longest shaft seems to be 52"

Don't know the answer to your question but here is how you can determine what shaft length TM you need for your boat.

 

TOP OF BOW TO WATERLINE .................RECOMMENDED SHAFT LENGTH

 

0" To 10"......................................................36" Shaft

 

16" To 22".....................................................42" Shaft

 

22" To 28".....................................................48" To 52"

 

28" To 34"......................................................54" To 62"
