A North Bay man has been fined for building a dam on Papineau Lake near Mattawa.

Gilles Aubin, 69, was convicted under the Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act for building the dam without a permit.

On August 5, 2007, Aubin attempted to plug a hole in an existing illegal dam at the out-flow of Papineau Lake. The hole had earlier been created by the Ministry of Natural Resources to help slowly lower the water level of the lake prior to the complete removal of the illegal structure. The case was heard by Justice of the Peace Mike Kitlar in the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay, on March 27, 2008.

To report a natural resources violation, please call 1-877-TIPS-MNR toll free, any time, or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
