  1. is that an ojibwe word? I thought it meant or referred to sort of a collection of various plants to smoke? I could be totally wrong though lol ummmm no he takes after me lol. It was cold here overnight too, actually I think it went to -15. Cool to hear the show was good. Grab anything cool?(fishing relayed of course?)
  2. Lol frig. Perhaps you should go for a sweat, release that negative energy
  3. Lew its been as hot as +18 about 10-12 days ago lol. Then it kinda cooled back off. Cool part is where we are fishing today is wide open. Yet if we drive 25 mins west there is still 20" of ice lol. And yes beavertail, im open ears to learning. No matter who it comes from. Its just a bonus its from my son Very proud dad, all our kids have taught us. Id like to think thats partly from us parents
  4. We went and checked it out last night just to see if we could launch or if wed be shorefishing. Launch is good for a tinny
  5. Thanks lew and chris. Yep ill post alot of pics. Conditions look pretty crappy today, +5 with 30km per hours winds lol. Tomorrow looks a little better. But I suspect we will be out both days regardless.
  6. So we are getting ready to go for a walleye fish on the rainy river today. My son and I are going through the mental checklist and all is well. He says "what about tobacco dad"? Ah yes we'll have to stop and get tobacco to lay down(typical ojibwe offering to the creator before taking from the earth) He says "well I finish breakfast and go get us some tobacco, ok dad"? Im thinking what the???? "Yeah dad I was out back in the bush and I found some red willow. That can be offered as tobacco. You can also smoke it too dad you know, its good for your lungs and its used as a sign of peace offering in war times" So Im a little baffled. I mean my boy is smart but what kind of knowledge bomb is he dropping on me here? He's 11 lol. So I make a call to an old friend that is a well respected elder. I tell him the story and he says your son is absolutely right! Please bring me some if you can. Okay, so know my son goes off in the bush and shaves some red willow. "Ooops dad I forgot, we cant use this today. It needs a few days to dry" Anyhow I just thought I'd share this moment. Pretty knowledgeable lil boy we got here hahaha. Cansasa by the lakota. Ill have to learn the name in ojibwe but i think they'd call it giniginige
  7. I do alot for my local fishery, or at least as much as I can. From selective harvest/walleye and northern pike, to catch and release/bass sturgeon and musky. My kids and I clean up the shoreline. We remove alot of snagged line from the water too. Every spring we volunteer at the sturgeon hatchery(amazing experience for the kids). Im not bashing the river steelheaders. Heck if I could find a place in the bush where I was totally sucluded it sounds like a great time/experience. but all the talk and stories of people fighting and littering and lopping fish up on the bank to die, its all just such a major turnoff. In the boat I can control whos in it, and where im going. Nice and scenic, quiet and great fishing. No one to bug me but great company Im all for us anglers protecting the resource.
  8. Eh I think ill stick to lake trout

Lol. My spot is open, launch is clear. 20 minutes away man. Gear is already loaded. Lets hope the bite is on!!!

  10. Now all the sudden I cant change the skin to mobile? Am i missing something?
  11. Ive talked this over with many COs about sturgeon. Not one said youd be fined for possession of a quickly released fish. Targeting them yes.
  12. I forget who even gave me the recipes of yours? We tried I think 4 maybe 5 different dishes cliff and they are all very very very good!
  13. Gerritt, is the better half gonna make frybread and or bannock? To me frybread is better but I still make alot of bannock. Let me know if she wants to make loafs of bannock and ill put the recipe up here. Its unreal easy but I have a few tips as well(like bake it on parchment paper so it dont stick to the dish lol)
  14. Ummmmmm. Yeah, your right its fantastic??? I prefer it with the scallops?
  15. I stole your french onion soup recipe via top secret methods. Its unreal good! In fact it was requested by the wife for her birthday a few weeks back?
  16. Blue lk, they visit are RRFN powwow every year and they are very good! A "bannock" burger, actually a frybread burger lol is super good but boy are the filling! My favorite is making breakfast sandwhiches with fry bread, super good!!! Bigugli, frybread and bannock are both super easy to make and yes, its even tastier on a shorelunch or camping trip? Im telling ya though frybread is pretty addicting. Its a heavy bread and hold up very well to soups and chillis etc. Soon, like me, youll be making a batch or two a couple times a week. If you save your oil, i cant think of a cheaper bread to make
  17. Thats exactly the one im buying?
  18. The wife makes that same casserole bigugli. Its very good and easy?
  19. When I was in my early 20s I caught a 42" pike while crappie fishing. Had 4lb mono on a lil 5'6" light action rod. I felt horrible after landing that fish. Even though it was incidental It bummed me right out. Thats fish swam away, I hope she made it but I bet she didnt. Use proper gear when your targetting these gnarly predators. All these musky guys know exactly what they are talking about
  20. Ok shag and others in this thread, here is a frybread recipe? 4 cups all purpose flour 2 tbl spoons of baking powder 2 teaspoons salt Mix dry ingredients good Add 2 cups of milk and stir into a dough(it wont look like the prettiest dough lol, kinda flaky) let the dough rest maybe 5 to 10 mins Heat up about 2" of veg oil in a frypan on 4-4 1/2, make sure its as hot as itll get. on a good surface(i use a plasic cutting board) add just abit of flour to keep dough from sticking. Add abit to your hands as well. pinch off a piece a little bigger then a gold ball. Roll gently into a ball. Flatten it on your surface lightly. Just a few pushed down dont overwork it or itll cook like a hockey puck lol. add to the oil until golden on one side then flip and repeat. Remove and add to a papertowel to rest. you can also poke a whole in it before adding to the oil to make sure the inside cooks through(you wont need to once you get the hang of cooking frybread) This recipe makes about 10-12 pieces
  21. Yeah no prob, just let me think for abit lol. I dont follow a recipe, so I might actually have to make some lol. Ill get on it soon here. If you like bannock you'll love frybread. And it goes so good with sooo many dishes Rick
  22. All because they asked the fans not to throw hamburgers on the ice
  23. Bannock is oven cooked or traditionally over a fire. Fry bread is fried and crispier. Yes, all we use is real butter lol. I havent had margerine in my whole life This is bannock. Crispy on the outside and light and fluffy one inside more bannock here is frybread
  24. Ok shag im cooking this tomorrow. Ill let ya know how it turns out. Ill def be adding cracked black pepper and garlic. Ill serve it with some fry bread. Im running low on bread making supplies right now
