It looks like a crappie rod made in the 40's .. I have seen a few from that era as i used to collect them but lost interest..
The main value is in the heart so cherish this rod and just think how many fish were landed with it...
He did the correct thing.. at least the fish can finish her life cycle by reviving her!!!
a small amount of eggs (if needed) are fine.. by no means was he poaching..

guide spacing depends on the grip and fore grip your using.. and of course reel seat
There are quite a few different spacing you can use and use the one that suits your handle length so that the first guide is not too close or you'll be dealing with *line slap* where the line keeps hitting the blank......
i have a really old original red naptha .. been in the basement since 1970 but it's much older than that... I also have matching stove.. i wouldn't trust either lighting them up though lol
I have seen a few with crawfish in their bellies ,,but it depends on region and avail bait.. trout will pretty much eat anything and i have seen numerous times where one bait is hot one day and totally different bait the next!!
