First you need to determine who owns the fence. If it's even one inch inside your property line, it's yours (on the line, you share & over the line it's theirs). Technically, that means you bear all costs unless the neighbour wishes to participate. If you can locate the survey stakes this will help, otherwise a surveyor will be needed to determine exactly where the property line is. As it is a recent purchase you should have received a plan of survey when you bought the house that may help as well. It would also be good if you could determine who put up the existing. In MOST circumstances it should be a shared fence, meaning split costs. But don't expect that to be the case without verifying. It wouldn't hurt to "feel out" the neighbour & see where their thoughts might lie. Could be they are as ready as you are to rip it down & put up a new one. Cooperation is always best! Michael

Not sure if that's what I heard called "plain language" style of publishing laws & regulations, but it is definitely clear and I do like it! But, unfortunately, as much as it would be desireable for us to have in the here and now, we don't. Great example of something to strive for Lungelarry! Michael

aaaarrrrgggghhhhhh! Yes, the sewing place! Also a good place to buy (or it was at one time) different vinyls and other materials. Good Luck! Michael

Check Kijiji for a start. Then Fabricland (don't ask!) Upholstery shops probably be your best bet (auto or furniture) Michael

I'll be up all night with that mental image vinni! Too funny! Michael

vinnimon, I wondered if someone would have the exact opposite to offer! I used to use braid all the way only, but now I use the mono/fluoro leaders because of what I read about braids being more visible, but I only just started because of that. I was using (initially) mono leaders when jigging, because it's easier to tie direct. Changed to fluoro this ice season and planned to continue trying it for this coming softwater season. Guess I'll be trying all the combinations now to see what I like best. Fun! Michael

Just had a brainstorm (cramp?)! Braid doesn't stretch, mono does. Could it be the stretch factor running your baits deeper? Michael
-
Ya got in a bit ahead of my questions! 10 pound Ugli braid - is that equivalent to mono diameter or breaking strength? Michael
-
I got the idea that's what you meant, but I got lost in there somewhere If tightline ramped right up to 50# braid or higher, it's equivalent to 12# mono and your thought would bear out if he was previously running an 8 or 10# mono. I started out with 8-30 (30# test, 8# mono equivalent) and dropped to 6-20, then 2-10 & 1-8. On my ultralights with 2-10 I can air mail a 3/8 oz weight right to the spool knots, about 220 feet or so. I also found that I could use 1/4 oz where I might have used 3/8 to get down before (I'm talking jigs or walking sinkers). Even with the 8-30 trolling sticks, cranks or spinners I don't notice any depth concerns, I catch as many weeds now as I did with mono! So, tightline? What braid are you running? What mono did you run? Michael

I find that many braids tend to float unless it says sinking on the package (Gorilla had a sinking braid). I noticed this when slip float fishing, the line to the float stayed on the surface. Archie, I think you maybe got something backwards there (typo?) or I'm getting cabin fever crosseyes - 8# mono equals 30# braid, 8# braid is equal to 1# mono, making it much thinner in profile (average diameters of course). This thinner profile should (and does I think) cut the water better. I'm thinking the depth problem tightline experiences might be more related to mono sinking easier than braid. I personally haven't really noticed less depth trolling with braid, nor had I heard of it. Something else to check out in soft water season! Michael

Fluorocarbon vs Fluoro leader material
cheaptackle replied to rippinlipsfishingteam's topic in General Discussion
Curious to say the least - fluoro is "supposed" to be more resistant to bite offs. If you were consistently just loosing the last hook I'd suspect something with the assembly like the knot at the next hook or something, but you're loosing 1 or more hooks or even the whole rig when using fluoro, but not with mono. Sure would like to hear what the scientists at the fluoro company would have to say about that! Good input, gb, I've tucked it away in one of the cubby holes between my ears for thought while I'm experimenting this coming soft water season. Michael -
Fluorocarbon vs Fluoro leader material

Wondering if fluoro can't handle the blades spinning around as well as mono now? Were the bite offs such that you lost the hook part only & got the blades back? Might sound silly but your experience got me thinking. Michael -
But but but...they're on sale 1/3 off! Act now and be enrolled in the points program, PLUS get a 75.00 graduation gift when you pass all 4 modules. tightline, how could you pass it up? hee hee hee Michael

Fluorocarbon vs Fluoro leader material

Are you saying the harnesses were made with the fluoro and big game, or that you were using as leaders? Interesting result either way, but I am curious. Michael -
Would that also include braid, musky baits, limited budget for pike lures, knots, and oh I dunno, anything to do with exchanging ideas about the hardware involved? And that was the SHORT list.... LOTS to learn from on this board, and a great place to find answers. I for one don't mind if I look like a real greenhorn when asking, and I certainly do find a lot to consider from ALL the posts, keep 'em coming! Michael

You don't suppose TJ started this post to get OUT of removing the plow...? Nah, he wouldn't do that! Michael

Hi Terry; That is astounding! I sincerely hope you undertook to register your experience and complaints with the MNR! I agree such an occurence should not be allowed to pass without repercussions to those who accosted you in such a manner. Perhaps they (MNR) might even be monitoring this thread as was stated they were doing with the RLTA thread, I'd sure like to think they'd act on it. Hi polliwog; First off I'm not a hunter so I have practically zero knowledge of the regs regarding hunting & weapons use, nor do I know anything about the circumstances. The only thing I can offer here would be that if the charges were misapplied, that's what the courts and the CO's supervisor are for. I can't and won't comment further on this singular issue because of my openly admitted lack of any knowledge on it or the laws pertaining to it. Hope they get/got it all worked out. Michael

Fluorocarbon vs Fluoro leader material

That 100% part is the one that is vexing me! Both the leader and spoolable claim the same. I'm sure that there will be input that will claim a difference between the 2, I'm going to let reality show me if there is one. I did catch the difference with the coated lines, co-polymers I know them as. Stopped worrying about all that when I was convinced to use braid. Never tried them and don't think I will be. I'm liking what I have now quite a bit, and I can always go "old school" again! Michael -
Fluorocarbon vs Fluoro leader material

Dara, I'm just getting comfortable with it myself! I was a 10 lb test trilene guy (raised that way) up till about 10 years ago when I starting trying 6 & 8 lb. Transitioned to braid about 4 or 5 years ago (slowly!). Wait until the Reverse Albright vs Uni to Uni splice knot argument starts! -
Not knowing who told you makes it kind of hard to put any weight on the statement. I can only say that if you trust the source as being authoritative then you can only follow your own conscience as a result. If such a circumstance were to occur (I think it unlikely) I would suspect it would be combined with other issues (circumstances) as opposed to the sole & only reason. How many times have any of us set the hook then passed the rod to a newbie, child, or a fellow angler for whatever number of reasons? As for being charged as the CO sees fit, I think a great deal of motivation on the CO's part would be required as in something far beyond a whim. A singular exception I might be convinced to see would be it one of applying a lesser or minimal charge as a spanking for a greater offence, but that again would be dependant on circumstances, intent and perhaps even a known history. In short, COULD does not mean WOULD. Just like any individual COULD break a law, does that mean that they WOULD? I don't think so and I have to wonder if fixing the law as you suggest WOULD open yet another can of worms... Michael

GB - the regs seem pretty clear on culling, specifying a live well must be used, kept (held) fish must be legal, license limits etc. Used to be that your daily limit was your "catch" as opposed to your "keep". Now, if you can't successfully release a cull, it counts toward your keep limit, meaning another must be culled. The 3 line circumstance you mention "2 anglers and yourself" seems to be in line as well. 3 anglers, 3 lines (this assumes all are licensed). Rotating use of the lines doesn't seem to me to be an issue as opposed to "more than one line per angler". As for the undersized muskie, I'd think that would be treated the same as any OOS would, get it back quickly and no foul seems to be the guiding rule. We're fishing, we may target a species but have no control over incidental catches. I'm just flipping through the regs as I type this. As in any publication, one COULD get more than one definition out of the printed words. Not sure what exactly you would be put at ease hearing, but I'm getting the idea from all this that as long as one's efforts and intent is to comply there would be little to no expectation for any repercussions. It's like shooting the messenger, it would be a punishment for doing his job (delivering), or beating a dog who comes when you call it so you CAN beat it, the dog complied but got rebuke for the action, never mind what angered you in the first place. I don't think any MNR CO is about to ticket anyone who is making their best effort to comply, doesn't give one much reason to comply if they do, right? I hope you'll feel more at ease from all that's been offered here. I was especially comforted myself by Irishfield's mention of the letter he has, it was good to see there was some committment from the Ministry in open format. The laws exist for use when NEEDED, if their application is being abused there's avenues for that as well as was stated earlier. Michael
-
Not my buddy, he's a "J", same office though (for the last few years anyhow). I personally have to agree with the Ask the MNR quotes and other views, the law is there and technicalities exist such as my buddy & discussed, but intent & surrounding circumstances are what should dictate. One clear thought is that a photo of an OOS could be construed as evidence as well, IF the circumstances warranted. I think all have said though, that if the intent is a quick release there should be no issue, and it seems the indicated MNR input sides with this position. Michael

Fluorocarbon vs Fluoro leader material
cheaptackle replied to rippinlipsfishingteam's topic in General Discussion
I changed to braid a few years ago for my main lines on all my gear but always used mono for 2 to 4 feet as a leader until recently (thanks to OFC posts!). I only use spinning reels so I can't say what behaviour may be expected with baitcasters. Asked the same question at the local tackle shop (not big box). I was given a bit of a lesson on the fluorocarbon spoolable vs leader. Spoolable is supposed to be "softer" and the leader "stiffer". The spoolable is subject to some memory curl where the leader will stay straighter. That's what he said and what the packages also had on them. The leader was also (claimed) to have a higher abrasion & bite off resistance than the spoolable. I wasn't too concerned about the memory issue for a very few feet of usage, but the abrasion aspect is one of the reasons I changed to braid for a main line, sooo.... I'm trying both as a leader to see if any difference is noticeable. So far, the only difference I note is the leader costs more. I've only got this current ice season in this "experiment", the soft water season may bear a different result. Michael
