  1. Got mine in the mail today. Thanks again guys
  2. Now to find my brain bleach...
  3. I just picked up the 570 from Bass Pro and paid $219 +tx during their Spring sale, mind you it's not the portable version. I've only used it on one outing (waiting for engine parts for outing number 2 ... ) and it is my first fish finder so feel free to take this review with some healthy skepticism, but in my opinion it performed really well. Screen clarity and readability on a very bright, sunny day was exceptional, readings on the bottom composition (ie: soft vs hard) seemed bang-on with what I knew about the area, battery consumption was minimal, depth accuracy even at full speed was great, and the built in alarm capabilities were fun to play with. My only issue was that it seemed very sensitive to changes in the direction/speed of the boat. It seemed like "fish" would appear particularly frequently after a change in direction or speed, but I suppose that could be related to my positioning of the transducer. More than likely I just need more time with it to know what readings are to be trusted and what can trigger false-positives, so I'm willing to blame the user on that one. Good luck with whatever you decide to buy.
  4. Very cool vid
  5. Looks like I'm gonna be eating subway 3 times a day for the next 3 months
  6. Good advice, I went and grabbed a bunch of cotter pins at CTC today for just that purpose...how often do you check those seals? Now the boat's gonna have to sit for a week while the parts shop orders the seals in :wallbash:
  7. I believe I found the problem Where there was supposed to be propeller seals, I found....Absolutely NOTHING! Well actually I did pull this crap out: Boy I'm ticked no wonder the gear case oil looked like crap when I drained it. I've learned something today, next time I buy a used boat this maintenance is getting done before she ever hits the water. Hopefully I didn't do any damage by using it. Guess I'd better drain the gear case oil again...
  8. That's really cool, always great to see such happy kids.
  9. No worries Rock, didn't take it that way at all. Yeah I'm starting to notice the money adding up, but as long as the Mrs. doesn't we'll be ok Hey, you're right, it is nice to know I wasn't the only one
  10. Eh, what can I say? I'm new to this sport
  11. It's a 2 stroke, but unfortunately I'm positive that it's gear case oil based on colour and smell
  12. When I changed the gear case oil last night I noticed there was water in it, but I was pretty sure I'd found the problem when I noticed there weren't any O-rings on the vent and drain screws. Took her for a good run today and thought everything was great, but now I noticed there's some gearcase oil leaking behind the prop. So I could use some advice, do I start by changing the seals directly behind the thrust bearing or are the guilty seals further in? And is this major surgery or are these seals accessible just by removing the prop?
  13. Lamprey eh? Never heard of em...but I just looked it up and yeah you're right on, that was definitely it. Nasty little buggers...
  14. Well the title says it all, first time out and got skunked. Tried pretty much every depth from 10 FOW to 80+ I was using micro tubes drop shot style...where the heck are those perch? It was great to be out on the water though. The boat ran great, and I had a lot of fun with the new Humminbird. First time using a fish finder and it was pretty amazing to cover spots I was in last year and realize I really had no clue how much water I was fishing in. I did see a beast of a carp floundering on the surface with something that looked like an eel (heck if I know what it was) clamped onto one of its bottom fins. Hopefully I'll have a better report the next time out.
  15. Sweet! Thanks guys
  16. 315K on an '02 Corolla, and until last year it cost me absolutely nothing in repairs...now I'm dealing with clutch issues but they'll get sorted out. Engine uses a bit of oil, but for the cost of about a litre between each oil change I won't complain. I'd highly recommend Toyota
  17. Ahhh, that makes sense, I was only thinking along the lines of if you used em right where you caught em. Was out on the St. Lawrence near my place last fall in about 10 - 15 ft of water and the bottom was thick with them...they were chasing my lure and one would get snagged every few casts. At the time I wasn't aware of the regs on them so I just threw them back. I'll be sure to leave them out for the sea gulls this year.
  18. What would be the reason for not being able to use them as bait? Since they're just a nuisance anyway
  19. An update, just because I said I would, I decided not to order online. I didn't want to have to deal with possible returns, incorrect/damaged parts, etc... Went to the local dealer they had everything I needed in stock and I paid the exact same prices but in canuck bucks and with no shipping so I'm pretty glad I went that way. Now to find some time to get this stuff installed.
  20. Hey Boatman, PM sent. The fins on one of the intake screens are broken, well gone actually, and as they're fairly cheap figured I might as well have a spare on hand. As far as the impeller goes, I just got the boat at the end of last season and the indicator stream seemed kind of weak. I forgot to ask the old owner when the last time the impeller was changed so I figure might as well just do it and not have to worry about it.
  21. Yeah good point CheapTackle, I think I can get around most of those fees by having it shipped to a receiving place in Massena. Will probably order this stuff in the next week or so, so I'll report back on the experience when my stuff gets delivered.
  22. Has anyone ordered parts/manuals from marineengine.com? I'm looking to grab a manual, two new intake screens, and an impeller repair kit for my 1989 Johnson 30hp, and I'd rather not go through the local Johnson dealer. Called them this morning to ask about a spring tune up and he says "yeah we'll start er up and see how she runs" ....and charge me an hour labour for the "service" so I'll just do the work myself thanks. MarineEngine has everything I need in stock but before I hit the "spend my money" button I figured I'd ask here in case there's some horror story I should know about. Or a online Canadian dealer so I won't get bent over quite so far for the shipping fees...
  23. Alright my bad I read the page on Ontario taxes to quickly, but I'm still not happy about it Especially the fact that this is going to hit everyone in a big way, like heating bills next winter, that thousand bucks is only going to last so long... Jer, I miss Mike Harris, I know some didn't like all his policies but he did exactly what he said he was going to do, and a lot of that involved spending less of our money.
  24. That site looks like a sorry attempt to polish a steaming pile... Why can't politicians just be honest and say "we're increasing your taxes" instead of hiding behind all the crap. Is anybody actually buying the line that this is actually going to be beneficial and we'll all come out a head? This sentence is a perfect example "The RST rate on transient accommodation, such as hotel rooms, is currently five per cent. Under the single sales tax, the provincial portion would increase to eight per cent." That 5% is GST, there is no PST, so it's going from 5 to 13 not 5 to 8, how the heck does that help tourism? sorry guys, but this stuff eats me up /rant over
  25. Can't offer any experience other than that I've been waiting for the H 570 to hit Canadian stores and all of the reviews I've managed to dif up on it have been stellar. Definitely going to pick one up at BPS in a couple weeks....unless of course a bunch of folks come in here and recommend the Lowrance.
