Kinda like going past Sorri's Point and the white painted slope as you entered Hungry Bay. You know us Finns we like loud colour and making a loud statement.

Oh the good old days!!  Now the Six Mile Lake Cottagers Association would try to ring your neck for painting a rock face!!

I also grew up on the lake. Even have our families original copy of the lot surveys from when the land around the lake were first made available. By 1980 the fishing sucked. Too much pressure on fish populations. Then residents, by and large, stopped fishing the lake. By 2000 the fishing was again fantastic.  Six Mile's current decline is similar to the decline of most other Toronto satellite lakes. I've  also seen similar on Mitchell, Canal and Dalrymple

My great grandparents bought land when it was first available as well.  My grandparents actually met on the lake, as young children.  They married, then bought their land from the government for something like $2.5 / foot of water front.  He got 350 feet of water front for under a thousand bucks when he was 18 years old.  He is 90 now...

Is that just for Crappie, or is fishing in general tough?

In general...   Most certainly for Crappie.

The Pike action has slowed down.  You can still have OK days. But nothing spectacular, and the sizes are way down.

    I don't target bass ever.

  4. I fish 6-mile all the time.  I grew up on the lake, and have slowly watched the crappie population drop, and drop....and drop...

The spots I used to bring home a dozen nice fish, and release another 20+ smaller ones.  Now, The last 2 times I have fished those spots, I have been skunked on crappie.

So I'm not really sure what to say.  I only ice fish for crappie.  I spent the weekend at 6-mile, and the current through the lake is wild right now.  This is the highest water I've seen on may 24 in all of my years on the lake.   So maybe try again in a week or two.  But for the most part, 6-mile is a tough lake for crappie fishing these days.

I'll be back up there for the weekend of June 1st.  Fire me a PM if you want some details on the Crappie spots that I am aware of.

  5. I'll be where the river hits the lake, in the deep hole just past the heavy current where all the sunken logs build up and steel my jigs......  25 FOW.

If the eyes aint bitin" the cats will be!   And they taste just as good IMO!

The current will be heavy this year.  Should make things interesting.

  6. A co-worker of mine has been going to Cedar every year for opener.  He is confident that the ice will be gone by then.  According to him, he has fished Cedar every opener for 35 years (likely not true...).  I'm trying to tell him it might not happen this year, and he's not listening.  And he is taking is 83 year old dad out with him.

All the reports I can find are all for Oepongo.

Anyone know if Cedar and Oepongo get ice out around the same time?  Not sure the currents in the lakes.

If you're going the drill route make sure the drill is brushless or they will burn up in a hurry. ;)

Best option is the Milwaukee Fuel.

FYI be careful with it. A guy on FB had it catch on his glove and it dang near ripped his thumb off!!!!

Bleeding like a stuck pig and the x-ray of the bones was not pretty.  ?

Best to use a drill plate too rather than just drill and bit combo.

That happened to me this winter.  Rubber coated gloves, and the auger caught it.  I thought I broke my thumb.  It was 2 months ago, and its still sore.   Lesson learned.  Wont to that again!!

  8. I've seen Stilhl power heads used on ice augers.

The barrie ice fishing tournamet guys rent the power heads and mount them on a custom rig for drilling hundreds of holes before the tournament.  They mount it on a custom built rig they tow behind 4 wheelers.

    Might be an option.

I sold my strike master last year, and used the money to by a Dewalt XT 20 volt brushless drill.  I am never going back to gas.  Ever.

  9. WTH is right Bri. !!  Never in a million years would I expect to see someone roll up in that!

Terry, did you trade in the Yama-doo for that rig?    Maybe throw the rear tire/tracks on the back of that truck. "Suzuki-doo"!!

Or are the quad tires bigger then the Suzuki?

  10. I lived on a bush lot for many years.  Septic.  Oil Furnace.

There is to much to type right now.  I think we need to go fishing together and chat.!

I highly highly recommend moving though.  I can assure you, that if you find the right place, you will enjoy a much higher quality of life know how much you enjoy the outdoors.

The ninth line of oro to Georgina island has opened up again take a boat if that’s the area you want to fish

Herd about that Terry.  Thanks for the heads up.

I won't be heading out on Simcoe this weekend.  But if I where, it would be buried deep in the bay.  I have no plans to go anywhere near the end of the bay.  I was out there the day before the big ice shelf broke off many years ago.. Scary stuff.

That is one slick sleigh!! Really nice job!

I would have cut the runners wider as well, but i'm sure it slides along nicely. In deep snow though, it will dig in some.

    Still a really slick design.

    S.

I have a space restriction for it to fit in the back of my vehicle.  So I couldn't go any wider on the skiis.  I have 1/2" clearance on either side for it to squeeze in right now.  Or else I would have a wider ski.  The current ski is 2" wide.   My UHMW was actually 3-1/2" wide, and I ripped it down to 2".

If I ever get a new vehicle, then I'd throw some skiis on like ya'll are suggesting.

It has 10" of clearance to the bottom of the tub.  Then the tub starts to contact the snow.  But there is no cross bracing to snow plow.  I am interested to try it out in a foot of snow or more and see how it work.   But usually by that point, I will be running my snowmobile, and have the skiis retracted anyways.

The cool thing about this project, is that I got the material for cost -30%.  And I pulled the UHMW out of a scrap bin at work.   So my total bill for the project was $62 cash!
