  1. not a good idea to feed bears or let them get that close... don't post this on OOD! Those guys won't be happy!
  2. Didn't want to come across this info on the Lady Evelyn area... Avoid the most popular routes in July and August. These routes are popular due to a combination of easy access, few portages and scenery. In July and August there can be so many canoeists and campers that you will likely find yourself racing for a campsite at the end of the day and pine for a little isolation. We are hoping to avoid crowds as much as possible.. guess you really have to drive far...
  3. How far of a is Lady Evelyn from me (north end of GTA)? Thanks
  4. Great info folks! To the poster regarding calling the "Staffhouse" what do you mean by that? I've never heard of Wolfe Lake Old growth forest reserve.. I have trued CCR in the past.. might check them out. Thanks!
  5. Hey folks, So my nephew, who is American, is coming up in early August and wants to go on a backwoods portage. I saw a post recently on some member who went to Chapleau area and it looked amazing. I am north of T.O. (King township north of Wonderland). I'd like to keep the drive under 6 hours to the access point. He wants it as remote as possible! Kid's got incredible sense of adventure - he camped in the Amazon with a church group building schools for kids in Peru. He likes to fish so if we can get into some decent fishing that would be great.. Portage lengths of up to 1km are ok.. longer we'd consider, but not too many cray long... We are planning either 4 or 5 nights. I've considered Temagami, Chapleau (too far?), maybe remote spots in Algonquin interior, the Watershed area (Shinning Tree??)... what's the French Delta like? What about West Arm (or is that too busy in summer?)? Lady Evelyn? I've also heard of an area called Diamond Lake (Temagami area?) and lake surrounding it. Is it tranquil? I have not camped any of these area except for Algnquin so I realize I'll have to plan a route/circuit. I have a fair amount of canoe/camping experience as does he, so we should be good to go... So I think you get the point - we'd like to keep crowds to a minimum...and scenery and good fishing abundant... Thoughts? I would be most appreciative of any feedback! Cheers...
  6. Checked again... I guess Google Maps is wrong cause it's still showing Gull River through Kinmount...
  7. Can you boat through that stretch of river north of Kinmount? Or are there obstacles/dams, etc? I have a 14' 9.9 HP and was thinking of giving it a go... Launch in town? Thanks!
  8. I looked at a map. It's called the Gull River flowing through Kinmount on my map... why is that? I'll check again...
  9. is the burnt river also known as gull river?
  10. LOL! Best way to ID animals outside of seeing them! I am always looking out for tracks and crap...
  11. To clarify, the poop was taken several hundred yards away in a totally different location. I did not intend to conclude that the poop came from the animal(s) that made the tracks. They were taken on the same day so I lumped them together... The scat still looks like bear poop to me.. for the poster who said berries should be in the scat, what if berries are not part of the bear's diet in that location? It appeared to be vegetation (grasses?) as I broke it apart with a stick to see what it had eaten.. It was fairly fresh (maybe several hours?) The tracks were found along a sandy trail. This was taken in a county forest near the town of Baxter.. there's a Christmas tree farm about a mile away... Are there lynx in Simcoe County? I heard that there was a cougar(s) sighting recently nearby... by two hikers... they heard more than one animal claimed the animals were "tracking" them

  13. BINGO.. That is what I am wondering.... I know lots of you don't think they exist, but this doesn't look like a dog print and it ain't no kitty cat...
  14. I have more pics... it's just a bit odd if you ask me... does not look like a canine print. These tracks were about 3.75 x 3.75 (roughly)
  15. Is this better? This to me looks more cat-like.... I cannot make out claws.. can you?
  16. Coyote size prints!! Scat is biggish... 5" x 4"ish...
  17. The tracks are NOT bear. I didn't mean to say they are. Poop is bear, but unfortunately the pics of the tracks don't do justice... If you look carefully at the last picture, you might be able to make out what I am saying... more cat like... probably just my mind playing tricks on me! Bears are apparently in that area... wolf not so sure... probably just yotes
  18. 12 km east of Barrie.. a little north of Aliston.. I am pretty sure it's bear... just wanted confirmation... 5 inches by 4 for the bear poop.. the tracks are puzzling... no toe claws (i.e. retracted like a cat)
  19. Scroll down to see track!!
  20. Enjoy...
  21. Such an amazing fishery... we take it for granted...
  22. Agreed... In B.C. staging and river-run chinooks have all the respect in the world.. We are lucky to have them here in Ontario Nice catch, by the way.. upper 20s?
  23. Thanks for all the tips, guys... the only lure I rarely use on the list is spinnerbait.. Never caught much on them.. maybe needs more of a chance! I did once catch a walleye, of all things, on a spinner on Pigeon Lake. I think the smallies like the smaller spinners, no? Thanks again.. Hope to post good results!!
