  1. On those older motors, does water piss out from exhaust as well as the side? That's what seems to be happening which I find odd. What comes out of exhaust is pretty warm, borderline hot... a lesser amount comes out of what appears to be a side port. I need to see a diagram to confirm where that motor is supposed to spill its water.
  2. Hey folks, Recently bought engine is running fine but I want a mechanic to check out the impeller/water pump. Does anyone know of a good, honest older outboard mechanic in Southern Simcoe County, Central/Northern York Region? I am near Schomberg (but closer to the 400). The motor is a 1979 Evinrude 25 HP. Thanks
  3. I love that spirit and I would have taken it out but the thing is so long that I can't even put it on without it hitting bottom. I could adjust the angle so that it's higher off the ground but it's no where near ideal. Thanks for the input though. You're right - getting out there is the most important thing. We overthink things sometimes!
  4. I am off right now. Maybe can be pulled off in a couple of days. on the other hand I do have a nice 25 hp Evinrude lined up to buy abs it's a short shaft. He's holding it for me for a day or two. That get me on the water a lot sooner!
  5. Good points. I will think it over. I'm not the handiest guy so hopping my buddy can give me a hand. on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being very difficult) where would you rank this project? also is 5" enough?
  6. thanks guys... seems like a bit of a project.. which begs the question - why not just sell it and buy a shorty?! I guess the thought of changing the transom seems like overkill. It's interesting that one or two of you pointed out that the transom was modified to accommodate a short shaft. I wonder why? Seems like a lot of effort when they could have stuck with a long. Also even if I built up straight across that red line, it only give me about 4" or 5" - but the difference is 7" I am going to talk to a friend to see if he would be interested in helping me with this project. Otherwise, the motor is listed now and if anyone wants a decent long shaft, I will sell it for $950 at this point (at least that covers my gas and the cost of the motor). PM me if interested.
  7. All the jack plates I've seen on Amazon and other sites are not $100 as someone mentioned earlier. What am I specifically looking for for the type of boat I own? Maybe a link to one?
  8. Between building up and jacking it, which would you choose ? Factoring in cost and and ease?
  9. Between building up and jacking it, which would you choose ? Factoring in cost and and ease?
  10. Can you tell from this pic?
  11. I'll add pic of entire transom. See if someone can spit a removable section.
  12. The boat is rated for 40 hp. It's a 16' aluminum.
  13. I suppose I could build the transom up. I'm shy by 7" or so. as for removing a section, not sure if that motor has that. How can I tell if it does? thanks
  14. Has anyone tried a jack plate ? Someone on i-boats recommended it.
  15. such a strange looking beast... any of you watch YouTube vids of those dudes down in the US SE taking in those monster gar? they are massive...
  16. I measured 22" from bracket to cavitation plate... transom is 16" - so definetly too long..
  17. So it is a 20" shaft, therefore long?
  18. Anyone want a 2000 Johnson 25hp ?! Otherwise a nice clean engine... electric start...
  19. Darn. Can I use this on my current set up ? The other motor is a short shaft. Or is this not possible?
  20. Hey folks, based on these spec plate attached below, is there anything that indicates the length id the shaft? Short or long? thanks!
  21. Hey folks, is it possible to clean a lower unit of an outboard and if yes, how? There's build up as you can see from being in the water I assume.
  22. Great info, thanks!
  23. Well I hope It does have a charging system... here is a pic of the motor I am going to pick up soon: Also, when it comes to tanks I know that metal tanks have that classic durability to them but some of the used ones I've shopped for online seem to have surface rust in many cases. I'm concerned that rust might be internal as well. I came across this plastic tank that seller has a fuel line for a merc but says I could switch out the line for an omc and it should be compatible with the Evinrude. Here's the pic of the tank. Is it a compatible tank as long as I get the right fuel line? Thanks for the help, guys!
  24. Good to know...
