Rude fishermen infringe on cottage enjoyment
ctranter replied to FlyGuy5's topic in General Discussion
When 90% of people repeat the same offense, I reserve the right to investigate everyone. I don't ride in on a white horse and say "clean up or else", I usually visit campers in the evening with a 12 pack, get to know them for a while, and then remind them of how hard I work to keep the lake clean. Unless you are someone who leaves garbage, how would you argue otherwise? -
My favourite fishing shirt reads: (sorry im on vacation and didn't bring it with me) "Social drinker with a fishing problem" It basically sums up my spare time.

Feel free to do it yourself and prove him wrong... or you could continue to make ridiculous claims from the comfort of your living room. Les is a true outdoorsman. He continues to expose bear grylls for the fraud that he is. If you think you can do it better, prove yourself.

Great, my nas GF walked by and happened to read just that. Now I'm in the doghouse. Thanks

Apple is, and always will be, the Nazi's of the computer industry. I build every PC myself, take good care of my HD, and have never had a problem. If you like being told how to you use your technology, or like having serious hardware restrictions, then join the line of pop.culture drones outside of the apple store.

I've seen carp jump clear out of the water in Humber Park Bay near downtown Toronto. I always thought carp were the obese goldfish of fresh water until I hooked into one and it fought me harder than any bass or steelehead I've caught. Now I know why people target them, they are not to be underestimated.

I'm hoping to get into fly-bass'ing more, thanks for the post

The rudest fisherman I have encountered have all been of European decent (Caucasians). I was fishing trent river from shore once and I asked the guy next to me, "any luck today?"... he turned to me muttered "I'm not here to talk, I'm here to fish"... Not five minutes later I hooked into a solid walleye. As he saw me unhooking it, he asked "Since you are releasing it anyway, mind if I take that catch for dinner?". I looked him right in the eyes with a huge smile on my face and said "I'm not here to talk, I'm here to fish", and I watched the fish swim back to the deep.

Rude fishermen infringe on cottage enjoyment

I have a cottage on an off-the- grid lake. Every year I commit countless hours to cleaning up after negligent fisherman. Heres some of the highlights: - endless broken glass, much of it taken out of my feet - A full trailor of garbage every season from campers who use my lake for fishing - chemical waste - Crudely made toilets. I don't enjoy cleaning up human feces but after getting the water tested it has been proven to make its way into the water - tons of other stuff too. Therefore, yes, i certainty do OWN my lake, 100 acres of waterfront and unofficially the water within it. If you have a problem with that, there are plenty of other lakes to fish. I know most of the regular campers/fisherman, and I routinely share beers with them. The rest, I drive my boat right next to, and greet them, with the warning that if they leave garbage behind, there will be consequences. -
Good report, every time I drive by cooks bay I think "Man that looks like a sweet fishin spot". Live target always produces for me too.

The solution is simple, if someone casts on your dock, take your rod and cast back on their boat. If you get lucky enough you might even hook one in the face. A week ago some moron decided to come 10 feet from my dock and started casting towards a swimming area that had kids wading in the water. Needless to say after some choice words, he's not coming back anytime soon. -
Well played, sir

Dark Green with gold specs works wonders in my lake. Never tried the bright pink but I'll have to give them a shot.

So last year while walking my dog along the Humber I came across a few fisherman waist deep in waders and stopped to chat with them a bit. I asked them how they were catching Salmon. The reply was "Salmon don't feed when they enter rivers, instead the only way to catch them is to "accidentally" hook them. Couple minutes later I watched the same guy set the hook into a dorsal fin, and haul the beast into a net. I refuse to believe the only way to catch salmon is to snag them... So this year I would love to experience the salmon run, but I want to do it legitimately. I know pretty much any Lake O tributary supports the salmon migration but I dont know what type of equipment to use. Rod??? - I have a light St. Croix 11.5'er that I use for Steelehead, is this too light? Will a 20 lb salmon snap this if it runs downstream? Line???? - I assume braid is ideal because its strength, yet the guys I talked to said they used 12lb mono.... really? Tackle??? - The guys I watched on the humber used Rapala's and huge spoons, I can only assume because they made snagging easier. If its true that salmon don't feed on their migration, then what else catches them legit? Technique??? - I did pretty well last season float fishing for steele, is this an effective technique for Salmon as well? The guys I watched were fishing very shallow... and using cast and retrieve technique. Thanks for the guidance!

I use PowerPro alot, but recently switched to Suffix, something about that shiny packaging draws me in.... In all honesty, I have never experienced premature breaks using any braid

In be4 this thread takes a plunge... Great pics looks like you had a great day too. It's all about havin fun with Dad. This, at least this has been true for me when trolling any body of water with large baits. I've never released a tributary steelie that didn't survive, but I'm using tiny hooks and take precautions while unhooking. I don't know how many fish I've hooked on rapalas and spinners that have swallowed the hook, making it impossible to release the fish without dying. I'm sure some know it all will reply to this claiming fish can survive with swallowed hooks but I'm fairly confident that is Bull. How the hell would it eat again? Even the P3TA-est angler runs the risk of killing a fish while fishing. Sure you can fish with barbless hooks but there's not much you can do when hooked in the gills or behind the esophagus.

You are incorrect sir: "Angler's Kingdom" is my cottage

Some nice bacon on those HOGS, great story too, fun read. What kind of crankbaits were you using?

Finally managed some time between teachers college and city obligations to get up to the cottage and soak some lines. Arrived early Wednesday morning and everyone was still asleep, so what better way to kill some time than to catch some morning smallies. But first! This is my first time seeing the new dock. To put this in perspective, the old dock was extremely old and every season it needed a solid weekend to get it back on the crib. After almost losing a finger (or worse an entire hand) to one of the biggest, least-avoidant 100 lbs snapping turtles last year while poking around the crib attempting to resecure the dock, I convinced the rest of the family to invest in a new dock. The skinny plank is about 20' long and the wide part is something like 15x15', can't describe how good that cedar smells! Here it is: This new-found satisfaction made the outcome of fishing pretty arbritrary, but the fishing was amazing never-the-less. Here is the first smallie from the new dock! fished the rest of the day and pulled in non-stop 6"-10"er's, unlimited sunfish and the occasional perch right from the dock. On Thursday morning I mixed new fuel, installed new gas line (HUGE thanks to OFC advice re: 9.9 outboard thread about engine dying), filled a cooler full of "beverages" and was ready to go. I thought, hey why not test this new crankbait, and BAM, first decent smallie this year right from the dock. I woke my Mom up to take the picture, she was happy to do so! Went out the rest of the day and the fishing was the best it's been all year. I didn't measure the above smallie, but I guessed about 16-17", pretty fat too. Later in the day I hooked into a beauty, at least 17-18"+ on a senko, but lost it at the boat. I probably boated 20 solid bass all day, but by then the Black Berry was dead and I left the DSLR on the kitchen table at home (D'OH!! ). I love it when other reporters do this so Ill keep up with the trend: Conditions: -Sunny/Cloudy, air temp was 26 when I checked mid day -Water temp was about 74 deg, which I thought was abnormally high but it is a pretty shallow lake -Water colour is stained due to high iron content in water (high turns amber at about 4-5 feet) What worked: -6" green w/ gold flakes Senko's - Tons of huge bass sucked on these to the surface despite not being hooked. I know it's cliche to rave about Senko's with their well known popularity, but they were certainly the bait of choice for the deeper parts of the lake (anything deeper than 12 ft I consider deep in my lake ) - Anything Live Target produced fish, I need to test these more since almost anything works in this bass paradise, but need to test tougher waters. On a side note, I had some fun with the Crayfish cranks that dive to ~6', their action was great bouncing off rocks in mid-shallows. The perch models were great for trolling - Gold spooned Mepps spinners and black furies, size 3-5 all produced. - Pumpkin seed coloured, 1/2 ounce jig - My favourite bait of the weekend was a chartreuse Lucky Craft floating crankbait, I was skeptical about paying 20$ for a crankbait, but the diving depth of this crank was absolutely PERFECT for my body of water, it was getting fish almost every cast. Even though the biggest catch of the trip was on this, it tended to hook tons of small bass. What I want to try next time: - Gulp Alive Craws on a heavy jig, I have noticed many larger bass spit up crayfish when caught, so maybe these will produce if jigged over rocks - dropshot rigged senkos, worms, or minnows Hope to get back up ASAP to catch more

I decided its cheaper to replace the lenses on my existing oakleys. I guess assuming that the lenses are polarized just because they are expensive is a bad thing. Either way the old lenses were badly scratched so they needed replacing anyway. Next decision is to go with Black Iridium polarized or Grey Iridium polarized. Black is more for very bright days (to which I fish many), and Grey is for med-bright (which I also fish many of!!). If I get black, I won't be able to sight fish on low light conditions. With grey, the same problem for bright sunny days. Any advice or experience with either?
