Some fishy business has netted a Toronto man a 20-day prison sentence.

On Oct. 20, 2014, Aziz Malik and another man went fishing along the meanderingBowmanville Creek, near Highway 2, east of the GTA. Nearby, veteran conservation officer Mitch Phinney says he watched as Malik deliberately used a hook to snag a Chinook salmon.

“He was tossing a hook out and then raising it upwards in a strong fashion,” Phinney said in his report. “This raising motion is associated with one’s attempt to snag fish by hooking them in the body.”

In Ontario, it’s illegal to keep a fish that’s been hooked in a place other than its mouth.

As Phinney continued watching, Malik discarded a rainbow trout in some bushes before leaving the area in a vehicle. Phinney stopped the vehicle to find that Malik was one trout over the legal limit.

Phinney maintained that Malik lied about his fishy activities. The second man has not been identified.

Justice of the Peace Robert Boychyn heard the case in a Whitby courtroom on Jan. 14. Malik, who did not respond to a court summons, was found guilty in absentia of violating Ontario Fishery Regulations (for possessing one fish over the legal limit and using a hook to snag a fish) and the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act (for abandoning a fish that was suitable for food and making a false statement to a conservation officer).

Malik, 71, was sentences to five days in jail for each offence. The sentences will be served consecutively.

Each of the four offences can be punishable by a fine of up to $25,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both. Malik has a record of past fishing violations, the court heard, which factored into the judge’s decision to sentence him to jail time.

On Wednesday, a man who identified himself as Malik’s son said his father is currently incarcerated for fishing violations. The man, who declined to give his first name, said that Malik will be released at the end of the month.

Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry spokesperson Joshua Henry rejected the notion that there are bigger fish to fry: “The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is committed to protecting our valuable fisheries resources,” he said. “Violations of our fish and game laws disrespect the thousands of anglers in Ontario who obey the rules.”

  2. Why would anyone want to start their career with a loser? And the laffs certainly set the bar in that department.

    I don't know.

Why don't you ask Patrick Kane, Sidney Crosby, etc.

They were 1st over all picks ad were drafted by losing teams.

Actually almost all 1st overalls went to losing teams because that' how the system works.

Maybe the Sens will win next year. :whistling:

  3. As per my lack of hockey love for the past 2 years (other than me 'woohoo dance when Dion left TO') and even following a game since that prior moment. What's going on and I sure as s__t know the Leafs didn't win the cup (mind you the final 2 or 4 could still be going as I type)

    Won the draft lottery.

They get the first overall pick in next months draft. :D

  4. Finally pulled the trigger on a new toolbox.

My old one is over 30 years old now and will be heading out to the cabin to hold my cabin tools, ;)

This big girl will be replacing it and should hold a bunch more tools than my old one that is completely stuffed. Still have tools everywhere that wouldn't fit in the old one.

Should clear up a bunch of space in my tiny little workshop. :D

As a bonus it was on sale over $1K off and because I put it on my CT credit card I get to spread it out over 24 months with no interest and I got $70 CT Money on the card to spend elsewhere. It's a win, win, win!!!! :good::good:

  5. Been too busy with the cabin.

I only got out fishing twice this winter. :(

Now I have to fix my sled and get my boat ready while waiting for ice out.

The sled has to be done now as I don't want to have to fix it up while waiting for ice up in late October.

The weather outside is much nicer now.

I'll be getting the boat out as soon as there is some open water to fish though. :)

  6. It's not all about the young people being in the wrong -- Who gave birth to them, raised them, and taught them what was right? There are a lot of idiots with kids who became idiots because being an idiot is all they've ever known.

    Very true.

I always shake my head when I watch The First 48 and the 19 year old homie that got whacked was the father of three young kids!!

  7. It's because everyone gets a ribbon now and everyone is special. People don't discipline their children anymore, they encourage them to embrace who they are, regardless if they are monsters and jerks.

I knew 10 years ago when they started this it would lead to a generation of entitled idiots.

George Carlin put it best - If everyone is special. The word loses all meaning.

People don't discipline their children any more because they will get thrown in jail for spanking them.

You can thank the government for today's children.

They are the ones that make the laws.

  8. I put mine on the outside but use this type: http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/shoreline-marine-brass-twist-drain-plug-1-in-0792427p.html#.Vx_Ij_krJhE

Much smaller chance of it accidentally coming out. I also carry a spare at the helm in case of emergencies. And a couple more packed away in one of my storage areas for good measure.

One of these would be even better but a bit of a pain to remove and replace. http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/shoreline-marine-garboard-plug-0792432p.html#.Vx_JC_krJhE

  9. ^ mine too....and i did them all. Im very greatful for it too because it led me to a lot of opportunities and lots of experience in all sorts of projects.

    S.

    You got it.

I have done everything from house wiring and plumbing, framing, furniture design and build, to HVAC, auto mechanicing, audio/video, car and boat electronics.

    I don't think there is anything technical I won't give a go. ;)

  10. All i had was wood shop. They did teach us basic elictrical work though.

But thats it. It was a huge push for university

And we did "oac" classes to ready us for that

We had the best shop classes anywhere @ my high school.

There was an electrical/electronics shop, wood shop, drafting, metal/machine/welding shop and a 4 bay auto shop.

It was totally kick donkey!!!! :good: :good:

  11. Borrowed a buddies sled and got my windows out to the cabin and safely stowed until I can get them installed. The main access point is getting sloppy with melt and mud but my other access point is still mint. Went in that way and came out the regular way. The alternate route is much smoother and will probably good for a couple of weeks still. :)

The ice on the lake is still perfect and there is no melting on it as yet. The snow melted and packed with the 3 days of warm weather earlier in the week but that makes it easier to get around. :good: :good:

No issues getting from the ice road to the shore by the cabin this week.

Last week the snow was still thigh deep but this week maybe a few inches.

The smaller windows all stowed inside.

The big and heavy ones are outside.

Lost most of the snow up by the cabin with the warm up this week too.

  12. If you wanna get a degree, get one where there is always work ie lawyer/dr/RN or better yet get a trade and youll only be outta work when you choose your outta work lol

Careers such as the trades. Welding, mechanicing and building tradespeople are always in demand as are heavy equipment operators.

Not too mention computer related jobs like mine. No degree for me but I do have a diploma and only had to school for a year.

  13. Great post lucas!

    Its very true!

Not only do you have to work hard these days ya gotta pray for some breaks too, and thats just sad.

where I live is much much cheaper cost of livin.

No idea how many of use make it in the gta etc.

Never mind the GTA. At least there are decent rental accommodations at reasonable prices there.

A 1 bedroom rental apt. here is North of $1500/mo and renting a room in someones house is $1000/mo.

Want a new "house"? There is a nice new subdivision loaded with manufactured homes (trailers) on lots small enough that you can reach out your window and touch the neighbours house. Luckily they are giving them away for only $425,000!!!!
