  1. Another fine mess o' Perch Mr. Ugli!!! :Gonefishing::thumbsup_anim:

Do you always fillet those panfish?... have you ever tried just scaling, gutting, and cutting the heads off and then frying them? That's the way I always do my smaller panfish and I find there's much less waste, takes less time to clean them, and the best part is I get to nibble on the fried tails and fins!!! :P:thumbsup_anim: Fried fins and tails are kinda like potato chips!... once ya start ya can't quit 'til they're all gone!!!!

Years back I would cook fish whole and pick out the bones. I then had to have bones removed that were lodged in my throat. Not a pleasant experience doing the scope thingy. I kinda get a bit queasy when I get any bones in my mouth now. So I fillet all my fish.

  2. After being stuck indoors the past couple of days, it felt good to go fishing. Down to the harbour to scoop minnows and then into Welland.

The wind sure made perching difficult. Could not keep my line taught to feel the hits on my bottom rig. Just kept feeding the perch. So picked up my bags and sought out a few spots out of the wind. I finally found a spot and the fish were stacked. Went through a good 40 or more minnows and a dozen worms. The weeds were still pretty thick so I went back to float fishing in 20 ft. of water. Of course some fish would have to be sacrificed to appease my appetite. Besides they wouldn't have survived

There were a lot of dinks and a lot of very large rockbass in the mix as well.

  3. Now there's a name you don't see to often on this board, Bream is what we Rednecks call all sunfish. It's even written into our fishing regulations meaning all Bluegill, Redear Sunfish, Pumpkinseeds, Green Sunfish, Rock Bass, Warmouth, and Fliers.

Our version of the Walleye/Pickeral thing.

Had a blast catching them in Florida. We were using little shrimp/ grass prawns? as bait.

  4. Well .. I can honestly say... as a fella who grew up in Agincourt (in the early 70's) ... many a Pheasant and grouse was fluhed out of the hydro fields between Kennedy and Warden (near Tam O Shanter golf course) .. not sure if they still exist though

Same with the area north of Finch from Midland to Markham rd. before the developments

  5. Oh man don't tell me that bigugli, I just bailed out of a family disney trip (7 days hanging out with my brothers bratty kids). Now I've gotta rethink the whole thing!

Oh and to stay on topic, I agree - the next 2-3 months are painful, I have to admit that it's time to organize the lures that have been scattered into 100 different planos and clean the gear :(

You poor man. Early morning you walk out the hotel door and there is a stocked pond just stacked with C & R piggies. The grounds keepers become your private cheering section as you pound the banks. They have bass charters out of 3 different locations. They will provide everything. They even have a 2 hour kids session at Ft Wilderness. They also have pontoon boats to rent. I've fished at New Orleans, Ft. Wilderness, Pop Century and Disney downtown. On my last trip down we took my mother along. She had never been to Disney. We booked a 1/2 day charter of spinnerbait and shinner fishing. What a hoot. I went fishing every morning before breakfast.

I go nowhere if there is no fishing!

  6. I've been to Florida a few times to get some bass fishing down in Kissimee in January and February. Feels kinda strange to walk out of your hotel in the heart of Orlando and start catching bass and bream. I think the City of Orlando had 30 stocked lakes in the city last time I checked.

I've fished in Disney as well. What a hoot.

I could like that kind of G2G.

  7. The pics in the cutting room sure do bring back memories of the Soo TJ. There would be 5-6 of us carving, cutting and blending and stuffing 200lb. lbs of sausage. All done while washing down a couple of gallons of homemade wine. Me being the new member of the party got to dig in and mix the sausage blend by hand. Right up to my elbows. Had to blend in a little bit of pork so the sausage didn't get too dry. Half would go in the freezer, the other half packed in oil to become cured dry sausage.

  8. That would be a tough situation to be in. You're caught between the rock and the hard place. If you call the MNR to have his license and PAL revoked, he may hate you the rest of his days. If you don't someone will eventually get hurt. I realize you don't hunt but maybe you can get a hold of some of his hunting partners and feel them out? Or is he a lone hunter?

  9. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say here~ It's different between casting your lure out and whipping your lure smack down into the water a foot in front of you. Well I think it's something like olympic swimmer dived into the water as they started their swim VS someone doing a cannon ball 5 feet or more above the water surface.

Bugs the heck out of me every time the son does it. Maybe he does it to spook the follower on my lure? All you hear is WHACK! fish gone.

  10. I'm sure that if you can include dad in all the other parts of the hunt other than shooting, and given a camera for spotting, he won't mind too much.

Remember, you are asking him to give up a part of a way of life he always knew and cherished. Nobody, young or old , likes to be left behind. I know old timers who go up to the camps even though they don't hunt and hardly fish anymore. One of my friends brings his 85 year old dad to the fishing camp and it takes 3 to get him safely in the boat. So what! IT WOULD NOT BE RIGHT TO LEAVE HIM BEHIND. My uncle is 74 and is trapped in a body that requires leg braces for simple mobility. He can't go fishing by himself in a boat or onshore. We move heaven and earth to ensure he comes out fishing for as much as he likes.

I'm certain, from the nature of your post that you love your father dearly. Despite his age and health try and find a way to help him realize a sad truth and still maintain his dignity. Get him out fishing more? You will both feel a lot better about it in the long run.

  11. Looks like a right respectable hunt, and you obviously have a solid hunting party that works well. I may have given up hunting several years back, but I still appreciate a good hunting report or story.

Still get a hankering for bear, moose and venison too.

That young lad will never forget the exact details of his first kill. WTG

  12. The reason there is compliance is because it is easy to comply, the fines are steep and the law is regularly enforced.

Seatbelt and drinking laws are regularily enforced and it is not hard to do so. It is hard to get out of those charges. It will be the same with cell phones, a cop sees you and you get a ticket. This all depends on how hte law is written.

BTW: according to The Star it is the physical interaction with the GPS unit that will be targeted.

    forrest

Yes the police have their regular blitzes every few months, RIDE, etc... But take a good look at the number of individuals who are charged after the accident. Also take a look at the number of people who, despite getting caught are still in posession of their licences. As for those who regularly drink and drive, they don't drive along the usual routes where we all know the spotchecks will be.

If you take a look at FNA's list of rarely enforced HTA offences, you should notice that the sheer volume is beyond the scope of the police even if you doubled their numbers. A lot of the charges are incurred as a result of an accident.

One simple case in point. (I got to see these all the time when I worked in hospital admin). A co-worker at our facility was brought in as a trauma case during a typical long weekend having sustained critical life threatening injuries in an accident. After investigation, they could tell from the skid patch and damage to the vehicle that he was doing 60 over the limit. They could tell from the distance he travelled through the windshield into a field, that he did not wear a seatbelt. He was not caught in the act, and their was no active enforcement. Accident or injury were not prevented. He was charged, and punished after the fact for speeding, no seatbelt, and the biggies, reckless driving, criminal negligence causing death. Not that those charges would matter to a paraplegic. Nor is it likely anyone will successfully sue a cripple for wrongful death when his insurance was declared null and void.

The point being made, enforcement with punishment should be proactive to prevent such grisly little stories. regretably, all too often, the punishment is applied as a reaction and consequence of such unfortunate events. You need to take a closer look at the score card, not just the final total.

  13. Odds are a ban on cell use will be difficult to physically enforce. Same with drinking or seatbelts. You will eventually get 80-85% voluntary compliance.

Your vehicle insurance is only valid while you are complying with the law. So if you have an accident while breaking the law, your insurance is null and void. Its a standard clause in almost every policy. We comply because we have something at stake to lose. We have families, homes and careers. Things that matter personally. How much would you lose if your insurance did not cover an accident?

That portion that doesn't comply do not understand personal consequence. Young, single, no ties, money to burn, egocentric, don't care. Whatever the excuse you pick, that is the portion the police have to target, and most will slip through the net. No different than DUI's, or highway racers doing 180+, or the thousands that drive our highways without insurance .

  14. Why would I need to mask my scent fishing. FIngers almost always have a layer of worm s--- on them, or the smell of food, or fish or slime. OF course it helps it you lather up with plain soap instead of them scented girly soaps. Then there are the young fellas who wear so much aftershave they smell like a cathouse on a Saturday night. You are either fishin, or trolling for a different kinda trout, but you can't do both.

  15. I will wear them in winter too Don, they're wind proof too!!!

I've experienced a Southern winter in Georgia. Everybody bundled up in winter parkas and toques. Me, i"m walking down the street in shorts and a tee  Almost cold enough for trousers.

  16. wow Bruce, that must have ben quite the scene at your place..glad it worked out in the long haul, lucky for you about having a vet for a friend...now ya need to kick the boy's :asshat: and be one of those "told ya so" kind of Dad's

Ever since Children's Aid took away my baseball bat, "told ya so" just doesn't seem to sink in quite the same way :w00t::P
