  3. I prefer to kayak the baits before sunset haha, but sometimes you have no choice.
  4. Final Florida Shark Fishing Report So my time in Florida is coming to an end and here's the final report. Over the past week things got really good. After I got the blacktip that one night we set out the next. Right at sunset I had a big shark on that bit over my 1 foot of 100lb cable and through 500lb mono. Five minutes later as I'm putting a new leader on that rod another rod goes off. We have the shark on for 5 minutes and then lose it. Upon bringing the line in we determined that the shark straightened a 16/0 circle hook, which is crazy. We had another few runs that night but the sharks never got hooked. We went back the next night but only stayed for 2 hours because of weather. The night after that we went out and I dropped baits far, 500 yards. At approx. 745pm a bait got picked up. After a 30 minute battle we beached a big bull shark. We were pretty pumped as this was the first one either of us have caught. The shark crossed a few lines so we packed it in after that. I didn't want to kayak in the dark if there are by,k sharks around. The next night we got skunked. It was a bad night of fishing and I'm not sure why. The final night (last night) we set out to a different beach. I set the rods out at 4:45pm. At 5:45pm my big rod got picked up. The shark ran for 20 seconds then nothing. I put out a full catfish and reeled in 1/8th of a catfish. Bad luck there. I set the line back out and at 9pm finally got a solid hook up. Being the last night, I was pretty pumped. After a 15 minute fight with my 50w reel I landed a big 6'5 sandbar shark. I'm pretty pumped about this one, sandbar sharks are cool looking. All sharks were safely released with hooks removed. Check out my video below of the shark from last night. I don't know how to put pictures on here but if you go on my Instagram (@pbenson27) there are a lot.
  5. I have two videos on my YouTube channel catching sharks on casted baits, that's how I got started. You just need a 12 foot heavy action rod that can get your baits way out there (40-70 yards). I also recommend fishing sunrise or sunset with casted baits as that's when sharks will come in closer to feed.
  6. I don't think anyone should ever swim at sunset lol. It's asking for trouble.
  7. Tonight we had 4 runs total. Two of them hooked. The first bit through 1 foot of cable and into my 500lb line and got off. Couldn't believe that, had to be huge. The second straightened a 16/0 circle hook. Crazy night lol. Some big sharks out there.
  8. I was able to get the hook out. It took longer than I'd liked but it came out. Also lost a huge shark tonight. Likely a bull haha
  9. So I've posted before catching sharks and here is another one out of southwest Florida. I've actually been here since Sunday but didn't have much luck until last night. It was a pretty cool day. We started out cast netting pilchards (tiny baitfish) and then brought them to a local marina where we caught catfish for shark bait. Catfish are the worst shark bait, however blacktips seem to like them and I figured a fresh bloody catfish was better than the frozen bait I had from previous days. So we set to the beach at 4pm and at 630 the reel which I had dropped a bait out on the kayak 350 yards starts screaming. I apologize that the shark footage isn't great, I had a talk with the cameraman about filming at night when it was all done. Either way an epic day of fishing going right up the food chain!
  10. Good luck man! This is the time that the biggest ones are usually caught!
  11. 2nd year musky fishing, but yes I realize wanting a 50 was an ambitious goal lol
  12. Thanks guys. I'll be back at it next year. liverelease, that was a great motivational speech haha!
  13. So today was pretty bittersweet. We took the boat out of the water which means two things: 1. Im done musky fishing until next June 2. I'll be in Florida shark fishing this time next week While this year I caught more fish than I ever imagined I would, I have to consider it a failure. My musky fishing goal was a 50" fish and I fell short. Oh well, I had a ton of fun trying and learned a lot. I'll be back at it next June. Here's a video of out last two fish of the year, 48" and 42". Tight lines!
  14. Thank you! Heading out for a few hours later today to see if I can put a few more in the boat
  15. With the weather being so warm gotta keep going!
  16. It's nothing special, just a 13 ft Boston Whaler. Small but gets the job done.
  17. Thanks guys. Hoping to get out and film a few more times in the next few weeks before it gets too cold. I want to get a 50 on film!!
  18. I highly recommend it man. Not only do they work really well but they also take less of a toll of your body than throwing pounders all day. Much lighter and you don't need to work them as much.
  19. The winds on this day were 30km/h with gusts of 45 until 330pm. I think that must have deterred everyone from going out. They were SW winds though so this spot was protected for the most part
  20. It's been a tough week with work and weather so I haven't fished much, but I got out last night and we went 2/2 in under two hours. The weather is back to being terrible so I thought I'd make a video out of it. Both fish were caught on Shadzillas which have become my favourite bait this year. And yes I know my net sucks haha, I just spent $1000 on a new shark fishing set up so I need to delay the net expense to next year. Let me know what you think on the fish/video!
  21. Lol man, it literally jumped out of my hands. I have released a lot of musky I normally do it right. Soon as it hit the water it torpedoed down to the bottom, it had a lot of energy.
