TroutnMuskieHunter replied to brickNblock's topic in General Discussion
Excellent advice Doug This happened to a buddy of mine when we were up North on a troutn trip...2hrs from a hospital, 10:00PM, and a few beers in all of us, made the decision to remove the hook at the cabin...We did pertty much the same thing as you posted!! I feel for you Pete!! -
I'd have to go with the Ottawa R. as my first choice seein how it's my backyard and the Muskie are HUGE!!!! ......2nd choice even though I've only fished it once, is Temagami.....

Fang, you're absolutely bang on as far as being on the big shelf!! Rick was supposed to show up but I think he had hockey to tend with....anyway, I'll take this off-line and send you a pm.. Steve -
Wow Wayne.....awesome pics....we didn't get to see the excitement but were told to be careful out there because a truck had gone though in ~80' of water at Bear Island!!! What I got a kick out of was watching the tandem plow truck plowing the ice rd between Bear Island and the access rd....couldn't pay me enough to do that!!

Cooler Question.....NF
TroutnMuskieHunter replied to TroutnMuskieHunter's topic in General Discussion
So....not sure about other coolers, but the Xtreme Coleman cooler worked great as far as keeping items from freezing during the trip up and over the weekend period..I threw a can of beer in the cooler out on the porch Friday afternoon and it was "drinkable" on Sunday -
Picked up my buddy at 05:00 on Friday, packed his gear in the truck and headed out for our weekend away from home with the boys...First stop was at the Irwin's truck stop in Pembroke for some grub and then off again to second stop at "gramps" on Hwy 11 to grab a few minnows and meet the rest of the gang... We were able to take the trucks on the lake and get to the cottage without any problems..we got settled into the cabin, had a few lunch cocktails and got out in the area we planned on fishing by 14:00PM..... Didn't take long before the first fish came up....unfortunately it was an OOS Laker ~3lbs.....the bites were constant for the rest of the day but were very light.... we did manage to get a few Whitefish as well as one decent Walleye before the day ended..Unfortunately, this 9lb gal was brought up from 52' depth and her swim bladder was sticking out of her mouth so it was a keeper.... Next day bite was slow but we still managed to pull in another 5 Whitefish, along with 4 OOS Lakers (biggest was ~8lbs) and 6 Walleye to end the day.... First time I've fished on this body of water and now I can hardly wait to try and get back before the hard water season ends!!!

Thanks Wayne...I will and we won't take any chances!! I hope to post a report when I get back next week.. FISH-ON.... Steve

Your favourite winter recipes? (NF)
TroutnMuskieHunter replied to Gerritt's topic in General Discussion
Geez...I wish I would have seen this post earlier...Like Gerritt, I to am the main cook....My Grandmother was Hungarian and raised me from when I was 3 months old...I've learned everything about cooking from her .... I just finished making Hungarian Cabbage rolls and Beef/Pesto/Cheese stuffed Manicotti (my wife is Italian) for our ice fishin trip weekend to Temagami tomorrow.... Here's some pics of the finished goods!! If I would have read this post yesterday, I could have posted the pics as I was preparing the dishes...I'll post the recipes when I get back next week!! Hungarian Cabbage rolls The Manicotti Steve -
I'm going to put the line on shortly and test it.....we're heading out tomorrow morning..thanks for the tips!! It's very compact....the stand comes apart as well so you can put it in your tote bag without worrying that it will break!!
-
I was going to make my own Whitefish tip-up until I discovered this one at Wal-Mart....$7.97 ...it's made out of hardwood.... all I had to do was give it a quick painting and replace the crappy line that it came with!!
-
I also use an ABU 6500C3....for $130, it's a GREAT deal!!
-
Another way of getting to the area that you want to get to is by using a sling shot...place your lure on the band, pull back and let go....oh ya..forgot to mention..don't hang on to the treble hooks
-
Bark Lake was wide open 10 days ago...We were able to get our deposit back from the place we planned on staying at for this upcoming weekend!!

Cooler Question.....NF
TroutnMuskieHunter replied to TroutnMuskieHunter's topic in General Discussion
I'll post a report when I get back...I'm surprised as to how many replies there are and i guess not too many of us use a cooler in the winter ... Once we get up to the cabin and unload the food into the fridge, I'll forfeit a can of beer , put it in the cooler and leave it outside -
Awesome bows!!....Those bunny jigs look very similar to bead headed woolly buggers...hard to tell from the pics...

Forget about that request for "could you please post another pic of a close-up showing how that wire is held in place with the elastics??" ....I figured it out and asked the wife for a hair elastic!! Thanks again!!

Thanks for the post and pics Fang...I'm going Whitefish huntin next weekend and would like to build a few of those for me and the boys....could you please post another pic of a close-up showing how that wire is held in place with the elastics??....If a Windlass tip-up was balanced correctly, would it work as well as this wooden one?? Thanks, Steve
