What Bass Fishing Technique Deserves What Action
OhioFisherman replied to MCTFisher9120's topic in General Discussion
All of mine are medium or medium heavy fast tip action as per the label, but some have a softer action than others. Not a matter of primary concern for me, more cover heavier action rod, crank baits I like a little softer action but not a big deal to me because most of my cranks don`t carry the standard hooks. Don`t use braid so the line absorbs shock. I prefer a longer rod, 7 foot, but use 6 footers also, again not that big of a deal, first step is finding fish, figuring out their diet of the day, most rods will catch them if you find them and figure out what they want. Rod is a comfort factor. Something I used all day long and the most comfortable got used more. -
Grew up in an inner city war zone, Cleveland, Hough roits, mutual distrust. Seemed like you learned how to fight pretty quickly, the smart ones learned when to fight, when to explore another option, quickly. Other options are the method I recommend.Strangely most of the times I have had to fight have been with people of my own color. If you think this could have happened back then? Guess again. Nice to see maybe people are putting the best interests of the country first? America, an experiment in democracy, and we are still trying to get it right, easier with out fighting. Don`t mind hearing other people opinions, no matter what country. A small world. Not yet but were working on it?

I have always rigged them tail down.

Very nice review Garry. LOL like the old camouflage braided nylon or dacron.

Take a look at our battles with communism, the cold war, not really communism, a dictatorship painted a different color and given a different name. A system designed by those seeking or in power to keep them there. To a lesser extent we have the same the same game played here? Minus guns? The party in power is attacked by the party seeking power. I hope he does well, no point in a big debate over it now, he hasn`t had time to do much. The wage freeze on his staff seems like a wise move, anti-lobbying moves for his staff is a plus, transparency? not everything has to be a secret? Unless your hiding something? It`s America, we do tend to over do things, hype them up, time tends to sort things out.

Need some advice on 2 combos. All thoughts are welcome.

Same opinion as Raf and Solo on the bearing deal, a numbers game. You take a look at some of the real old fishing programs and Bill Dance and everyone else was using red Abu reels with no ball or roller bearings, just bronze bushings. I learned on old Langley bait casters, no bearings, used the old Abu reels with no bearings, and have used reels with bearings, just a matter of quality. Bought a lot of used reels people were selling for a higher bearing count, or they had problems casting a bait caster, first few times driving a car doesn`t make you a driver? -

My buddy has 5 or 6 Sahara`s he has had no problems with them, a decent reel at a decent price. -
Charles as I recall you are right about the 3x plastics, as I remember they will also eat up some kinds of plastic boxes like the old plastics would do to tackle boxes. A link to info http://www.anglerguide.com/articles/536.html

Glad to see we are on the same page. I am an American and voted for him, but dude is getting a job. I don`t show up at the post office when we get a new mailman. I understand the historical significance, but just another American getting a position I wouldn`t want, too much hype too me, just want to see him or any president do a good job like they expect of the people. You can make your own call how that has gone.

Easy for me, tournament rules no alcohol in the boat, everyone I knew took it seriously. Most of the time a long drive home after a day on the lake, so it wasn`t a good plan after the tournie. Places we went to for a two day might a beer or two back at camp in the evening but you wanted to be sharp for the next day. Boat to me is like a car or truck, don`t have it in them, not in the boat. Fish give me a buzz!

Mike a plug-in kind of deal, usually had around 8 in the boat and used 4-5, a couple-few, spares? Easier to pick up a different rod in a tournament than spend time fixing a problem. Different bodies of water, different tackle? On Erie I could get by with a couple medium action baitcasters, and a couple spinning reels. Didn`t really need heavier gear no flipping to speak of, no junk in the water, but with my boat weather conditions (rough) could always be a problem so the game plan could change to moving into the rivers or bays and targeting largemouth in the junk. A flipping stick is a better tool for that job, medium heavy rods, heavier line. Inland lakes here have a lot of junk, wood, docks, weeds, just plug different rods in the boat, not a lot of call for me to use a spinning rod on an inland lake here, but usually one or to if the game plan changed and I needed to downsize baits. I would cast crappie tubes for bass if the bite was tough and a spinning rod is better suited for that. I keep most at home in school or industrial style lockers when not in use. Some are too long, 7'6" one piece to fit in the lockers. Some people hang in bars, tackle stores were more of an interest to me, and if I saw a deal I would buy it. I paid like 20 bucks a piece for my Shimano Convergence rods, they were on sale and I had cash? No problem for me to buy 4 or 5. Just never was to interest in 100 dollar + rods, I got one that costs over 90 and it is a special deal, a flipping stick (Falcon) designed for a spinning reel. Never had much trouble catching fish with the gear I bought, never had much of a problem with it. Feel is the deal for me, rod don`t feel right I don`t spend money on it, bunch of different brands all felt good to me. Just busy a lot easier for me to plug in rods than take time changing line and stuff.

Probably 30-40+ rods and I don`t think I own a two piece? A few telescoping flipping sticks.

Aren't alot of the baits impregnated with salt, not just covered? Probably most these days, at least the ones designed for bass. Also not out of the ordinary for me to spray on some garlic pam and add a little more slat in the bag. Some tear more easily than other an some days it seems like the fish are more aggressive with their strikes and beat them up, tear them to pieces. With a bigger worm or lizard I just break the beat up part of the head off to make sure there is enough solid plastic for a good hook hold. Bit off tails and I trash them. Don`t leave hooks in them when not in use.

Coffee, anytime.

Mike I have kept most of my soft plastics in those style of boxes for years, some of the newer soft baits may need to be kept in their bags most don`t. Some baits I bought in quantities of one hundred or more didn`t come in zip lock bags. I put what wasn`t needed to load a box in a quart zip lock freezer bag and store them in 5 gallon buckets with lids.

A fairly short drive south, Jann`s Netcraft in Toledo Ohio? No where near the size of BPS or Cabela`s though.

50 bucks for 2 bucktails? Lew that`s around 200 tubes, cheaper catching smaller fish? Driving an 18 wheeler in this stuff was good for some laughs, people do some stupid stuff.

Raf is right about the old style green curados, I think everyone that fished in our club tournaments used them, well except me. No particular reason for me not using them other than being cheap, and easy on tackle. I had a bunch of older Shimano and Abu baitcasters that worked well and saw no reason to upgrade. One friend that manages the tackle section of a Gander Mountain store here bought all the old ones they had in stock when the new ones came out. Don`t use Diawa baitcasters, so no opinion on your choice, Abu c-3s aren`t bad Shimano Citica? I used some baitcasters, Abu ultra mags, Shimano black magnums that were 20-25 years old, still worked fine for me. Spinning reels for the most part were an open water, light line reel for me, light tackle 1/16th- 1/8 ounce stuff when finesse fishing. Did win a two day tournament casting a small crankbait over a weed flat on a spinning rod, it was what I had put it on to pre-fish, was working, and saw no pressing need to change. Casting reels were all we had as a kid, back in the 50`s, I learned on one and got used to them.
