Lower Grand River Ice Watch 08/09 & Reports
OhioFisherman replied to Fishmaster's topic in General Discussion
Coast Guard had an ice breaker working the mouth of the Grand river here in Ohio for the same reasons ice jammed up and causing flooding. -
That is a sled? No experience with them, but if it will pull start easily but won`t key start I might look at the electric connections, wiring to the distributor from the key or starter? Key has to be in on position to start it? No safety mechanism in the seat to shut it down if the rider is thrown? Guess not if you have to get off to pull start?

Hearts go out to the people affected, a tragedy for sure!

I agree, government regulation is like having more cops on the street, better to prevent a crime than to try and clean up after it. Fish, don`t know if you heard any of the Prez`s talks from Elkhart Indiana. Elkhart is the RV capital of the USA, possibly the world. Un-employment went from like 4.5% to over 14% in one year. Tourism is going to be affected, especially US tourists. Most of the freight I picked up when I was still working (truck driver) go to Elkhart was either RV or auto industry related. RV dealer down the road from me looks like a ghost town, lots of RVs but no buyers. Seeing more and more used ones for sale in front yards. Boating industry has also been hit hard, and we all know about the auto industry, foreign and domestic. I will be 58 this summer, malls have announced here they are cutting hours of operation due to lack of business, first time I have heard of them doing that. Gas is going to go back up, maybe not soon with this economic situation going on now, but more people using it and supplies diminishing. Blame? Politicians certainly, they live in a bubble surrounded by lobbyists and back slappers. The news media? if you can sort through the noise they make it helps to be informed?

Years ago I used braided nylon or dacron on a large spinning reel, never tried any of the new braids on one. Dacron and nylon had a different feel coming off the spool, not like mono. Don`t reel against the drag, if the fish wants to take the drag let him, just keep pressure on and slack out of the line. Reeling against the drag can cause line twist. I don`t use the drag often so no problems.

Can I get that 2k a month on top of my pension and social security? Is that considered a job? -
There are forces always behind the scenes working against labor to increase their own excesses. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/01/27/b...n_n_161248.html The less you get the more they can keep of themselves.

I agree, the people at the top haven`t been happy making 500,000 k a year, they wanted a million, then 5 million, then ten million or more a year. The age of slow steady growth went in favor of a boom or bust economy so they could pad their paydays. Tough on the company, stock holders, the public, and the economy, but they earned enough, quickly enough to make sure they were on easy street. The suffering doesn`t trickle up as easily as it trickles down.

ALL AMERICANS TRAVELLING TO CANADA!!!

So if you go to Canada with out a passport, and our border people won`t let you back into the US you can ask for political asylum? -
The message here has been consume, consume, buy, buy. People fell for it. A news segment a couple days ago, homes that were selling for 100k in Cincinnati a year ago are now selling at foreclosure auctions for 7-9 k. It would suck to be their neighbors trying to sell your home? Last 8 years or so the people in charge wanted tax cuts for the rich, while the roads and bridges crumbled around them, while business shipped the higher paying manufacturing jobs overseas decreasing the tax (income) base. A Utopia that wasn`t, a make believe society that couldn`t sustain itself. The bigger they are the harder they fall?

I have caught some decent ones on a lot of different pound test lines, by accident and on purpose. Good quality steel leader, or now florocarbon is probably more important to landing them. My choice would be 17-20 pound stren on a bait caster, but I have landed 36 to 40 inchers on a spinning reel with 14 pound test Stren. Had a lot of decent pike with more weight in weeds tangled on them and the line than the fish weighed. Didn`t use braid at the time but it makes sense.

Teacher are generally better educated then the general public, 4 or more years of college isn`t cheap? Don`t you think someone you are trusting to educate your children should be to afford to live in the neighborhood they teach in? In the states so things are probably a bit different. they not only have to be teachers, but cops, and moms and dads, because their parents either aren`t interested(unless little Johnny gets in trouble, then it`s my baby wouldn`t do that!) or don`t take time. I delivered to a lot of schools in Cleveland, the teachers there should get hazardous duty pay, some had 3 or 4 cops roaming the halls. Next door neighbors, both were teachers, I still is, cad/cam at the local vocational high school, he was in private business but took the job as a teacher at lower pay to be able to spend more time with his family, he has more than just teaching credentials, also an engineering degree. His wife stopped teaching to home school their children because she could give a better education with out the influence and distractions of other peoples kids. Certainly a bad time to be in contract negotiations, but unlike politicians, businessmen, Wall street? The teachers don`t give themselves a raise, they have to bargain for it. You don`t bargain you fall behind, like most people with out unions. Politicians belong to a Union (political party) doctors belong to a union ( American or Canadian medical association) businesses belong to unions ( chamber of commerce, Cose-council of smaller enterprizes) to negotiate for their best interests. Maybe they are just smarter?
